Elements of language structure will be drilled and practiced in the classroom through oral and written exercises and class participation. OBJECTIVES: A basic aim of this course is to provide you with continued practice in learning and using German as it is spoken and written today. You will be presented with opportunities to communicate in concrete situations in which you will actively use many of the basic structures of everyday conversation and writing, master the basic features of the sound and writing systems and utilize a basic vocabulary. This course will also introduce you to contemporary life and culture in the German speaking countries. TEXT: Moeller, Liedloff, et al. Deutsch heute. Grundstufe. 8th ed. I calculate your attendance grade based on this daily grade system. Homework 20% Arbeitsheft Homework Policy: Each day, you will have a series of homework assignments that directly reinforce skills you have learned in class. Many of the written assignments are in the Arbeitsheft (Ah). For these assignments, the procedure is as follows: 1. Complete the assigned exercises in pencil or one color ink. 2. Refer to the answer key for those assignments. 3. In pen or a different color ink, make the appropriate corrections to your work. 4. Turn in the self-corrected assignments on the next class day. The same procedure is used for the Self Tests assigned at the end of each chapter. Essays and Revisions 15% At the end of each chapter, you will have a brief writing assignment [essays should be 12-15 sentences] ; and you are also responsible for making appropriate revisions by the date indicated on the syllabus.
