4 Umschlagbild: PRÄZISE NACHLÄSSIGKEIT Intelligenz ist die Fähigkeit, mit begrenzter Information sinnvolle Entscheidungen zu treffen. Selbst präzise mathematische Rechnungen sind nicht vor Unsicherheit gefeit: Numerische Näherungsverfahren gehören zu den meistverwendeten Computeralgorithmen. Sie führen die komplexen Rechnungen wissenschaftlicher Modelle durch und jonglieren dabei die riesigen Datenmengen des Onlinezeitalters. Mathematiker optimieren diese Rechenregeln seit Jahrhunderten darauf möglichst präzise zu sein. Die Wissenschaftler der Forschungsgruppe Probabilistische Numerik stellen diesen Ansatz auf den Kopf. Mit Hilfe der Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie statten sie numerische Methoden mit Fehlerschätzungen aus. Dadurch werden elementare Rechenregeln zu intelligenten Systemen mit mathematischem Bewusstsein für den eigenen Beitrag innerhalb einer großen Rechnung. Dies erlaubt ihnen, sich gezielt Fehler zu leisten, um Rechenzeit zu sparen. Numerische Verfahren sind Arbeitstiere, sagt Philipp Hennig, Leiter der Forschungsgruppe. Zeit zum Philosophieren haben sie nicht. Nur eine elementarste Form von Intelligenz macht hier Sinn. Deswegen verbringen wir viel Zeit vor der Tafel, um genau zu sehen, welche Zahlen sich eine Methode merken muss, um effizient unsicher zu sein. Am Ende bleiben nur wenige Zeilen Computercode - und viel schlammiges Kreidewasser im Waschbecken.
