1 Seite -1- zu PR /04 CPH-7134-D PURPOSE OF THE ORDER On 29/09/2004 we were assigned by the ordering party, the company to carry out laboratory tests on the product AG Weidesheimer Str. 17 D Euskirchen ROMPOX - D3000 The modern pavement jointing mortar and to write a report on the measurement results. 2. COMMENTS; GENERAL According to the ordering party, the product to be tested is a reaction resin-bound pavement jointing mortar with a graded mineral mixture. The binder is a two-component, solventless, water emulsive epoxy resin. ROMPOX - D3000 is a ready-made material, consisting of a filler component (sack packing) and a resin / hardener component (PE bottles). During the mixing procedure, a determined amount of water is added. The explicit purpose of this order is the determination of the following properties of fixing mortar: - Raw unit weight - Bending tensile strength - Resistance to pressure - Flexure modulus - Water permeability.

2 Seite -2- zu PR /04 CPH-7134-D LABORATORY TESTS 4.1 Manufacture of the test specimen: On 14/10/2004, the necessary test specimens were manufactured in the laboratory of the company AG by its employees under supervision of the signatory. The manufacture of the test specimens for the determination of raw unit weight, bending tensile strength, resistance to pressure, flexure modulus and water permeability was carried out according to the processing instructions on the packing drum and on the product information. Hereby, two variations were taken into account: - Test specimens (prisms), manufactured in metallic moulds according to DIN part 3 out of the mixed, stamped and compressed mortar to which no water was added - Test specimen (plate), manufactured with mixed mortar to which an appropriate amount of water was added. The mortar was filled and spread in a practise-oriented way i.e., without compaction in a prepared water transmitting mould. Some fibrous web was laid out inside the foam mortar mould measuring 60 cm x 25 cm x 5 cm. The prisms were removed from the mould after 48 hours and air-dried for another 12 days at a temperature of 20 o C and a relative humidity of 50 % until the test was carried out. The plate was removed from the mould after three days of storage in an atmospheric environment. After another four days, some appropriate test specimens were made of them, i.e., some prisms measuring 16.0 cm x 4.0 cm x 4.0 cm as well as some plates measuring 15.0 cm x 15.0 cm x 4.0 cm were sawn out. The test specimens were stored for seven days at a temperature of 20 o C and a relative humidity of 50 % until the test was carried out.

The raw unit weight of a material is the mass of the material regarding its volume including the hollow spaces. It is expressed in g/cm 3, kg/dm 3, kg/m 3 etc. As a general rule, the lower the raw unit weight of a building material, the higher its content of hollow spaces (porosity) is. Considering the determined raw unit weight of 1.65 kg/dm 3, the product ROMPOX - D2000 can rather be described as a material of medium porosity. In comparison, the raw unit weight of a hardened common concrete in an air-dried state amounts to 2.10 up to 2.40 kg/dm 3.

7 Seite -7- zu PR /04 CPH-7134-D2000 The raw unit weight of the cement bound pavement jointing mortar is about 2.0 kg/dm 3. Accordingly, the ROMPOX - D3000 pavement jointing mortar is more productive. The bending tensile strength is the maximum bending stress reached up to the break on the girder on two supports produced by a centred single load or by several, usually two, symmetrically arranged single loads (forces). The higher the value of the bending tensile strength, the larger the load is that can have an influence on the building component without causing a break or cracks. Common hardened concrete shows a bending tensile strength of 2 up to 8 N/mm 2. A bending tensile strength of 9.0 N/mm 2 was determined for the pavement jointing mortar ROMPOX - D2000. Regarding the determined resistance to pressure, this value can be considered to be very high. The cement bound pavement jointing mortar can show bending tensile strength values of up to 8 N/mm 2. The resistance to pressure is described by means of the maximum pressure load (breaking strength) with reference to the pressure surface determined in a pressure test. Just as with the bending tensile strength, the result is influenced by e. g. the form and size of the test specimen. The higher the value of the resistance to pressure, the higher the pressure load is with which a building material / component can be loaded without being damaged. For example, common concrete shows, according to its property class, a resistance to pressure of 5 up to more than 60 N/mm 2. The determined resistance to pressure of 24,2 N/mm 2 is located e. g. within the area of a well-composed and expertly compressed cement floor pavement of the property class ZE 20. The cement bound pavement jointing mortars generally show a higher resistance to pressure (up to far more than 40 N/mm 2 ); however, this need not be an advantage in view of the automatically higher E modulus. The flexure modulus (E - modulus) describes the elastic behaviour of the building materials and is expressed by the relation of tension to the corresponding elastic form change. The static E modulus describes the deformation resistance against a constantly increasing or inoperative load. The higher the flexure modulus, the lower the ductility of a building material with force input is; it becomes more brittle.

8 Seite -8- zu PR /04 CPH-7134-D3000 For instance, the E modulus for common concrete with a resistance to pressure of 10 up to 60 N/mm 2 is mainly between 15,000 and 40,000 N/mm 2. Elastic materials (e.g. some synthetic materials) may show E modulus values of 10 N/mm 2 and more. The static flexure modulus of cement bound pavement jointing mortars with a resistance to pressure of 40 up to 50 N/mm 2 may be18,000 to 22,000 N/mm 2. In comparison to cement bound pavement jointing mortars, the tested pavement jointing mortar ROMPOX - D3000 shows a significantly lower flexure modulus of 2,390 N/mm 2 and therefore a more favourably deformation behaviour. The correction value k f of water permeability for ROMPOX - D3000 is about m/s. This reveals a seepable addition of rain of about 45 l/(s. ha), which corresponds to a quota of joints in the pavement surface of 10 %, a good 4,5 l/(s. ha). According to the explanatory leaflet for water transmitting fortifications of traffic areas, version 1998, the necessary correction value of water permeability k f for the joint material with a quota of joints of 10 % in the fortified surface is 5, m/s. The tested material shows a significantly lower correction value of water permeability. It does not accomplish this requirement. It is not described that the cement bound pavement jointing mortars currently on the market accomplish the aforementioned correction value of water permeability. The values determined in the laboratory may deviate from the properties of mortar used on pavement surfaces.

9 Seite -9- zu PR /04 CPH-7134-D Evaluation: The tested pavement jointing mortar ROMPOX - D3000 is excellently suitable for the production of pavement surfaces for low up to medium traffic load to which no demands regarding the water permeability are placed.
