3 Welcome address 6 th EONS Spring Convention Geneva 2008 What better environment to share new ways of working and innovation in cancer nursing than Geneva, renowned for science and progressive thinking. This is the perfect setting to share updates on treatment and new approaches to managing cancer care in a rapidly changing health care environment. The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) and the National Society of Switzerland (SONS) invite you to the 6th Spring Convention to discuss and welcome innovation. New ways of working are often generated when circumstances change. While good ideas are interesting, innovation is different. It takes good ideas, tests them and implements them successfully into clinical practice. Change is occurring at a rapid rate in cancer care. In many European countries cancer services are now being provided primarily in an ambulatory or outpatient setting with subsequent change of resources. Therefore, it is essential to not only refresh knowledge of existing and new therapies, but also to explore developments in how to manage care for the person and family within a range of care settings. Furthermore, nurses are increasingly working in new roles, for example advanced nursing practice. This raises questions of how cancer nursing should develop and what roles nurses should delegate without detracting from high quality care. This Spring Convention 2008 introduces ideas of change, of advanced practice and practice development. As a team we have built upon the successes of past spring conventions and we have added more educational and interactive sessions, as well as varied clinical update symposia. We have tried to balance the variety of instructional methods, including plenary lectures by invited speakers and selected proffered papers on topics related to the theme. Discussion forums and workshop-related activities will ensure the educational and interactive approach throughout the convention. You would not want to miss these exciting special topics: Innovation in cancer symptom management Spot light on ethical issues in cancer care Innovative cancer therapies Advancing nursing sensitive outcomes Enhancing psychological care Communication and complexity in cancer care Managing change in cancer services Multi-disciplinary working in oncology teams This year s conference also features a novice researcher educational session to provide an introductory level programme for those unfamiliar with research methods. The opportunities in this year s programme will assist nurses to develop cancer care practice and implement change. 5 Novice Cancer Nursing Research Workshop Saturday 29 March 2008 (08:00 12:30) Research makes a difference to practice: demystifying research Objectives The aim of this workshop is to help practitioners understand the research process and to assist them in using research to change cancer practice. Innovation is about change. Therefore research is an important tool in developing nursing interventions. This symposium is aimed at those who are novices to research and feel uncomfortable or uncertain with how research is undertaken. Research is not something carried out in isolation and clinicians are essential in guiding the research agenda, developing questions, influencing practice and initiating practice development. Knowledge and understanding comes from finding out more about patient experiences, often in very difficult areas. Cancer knowledge is expanding and also the interventions, symptom management and prolonged cancer journey. Research and evidence is just one of the tools in providing quality care. Target group: who should apply? Nurses who feel they are novices to research will find this workshop relevant. If you are interested in research and if you find searching for evidence baffling and confusing, this is the workshop for you. Come with topic areas that you have found difficult to search and research questions that puzzle you. Through this workshop we will guide you in developing research questions for practice. The workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to discuss their ideas and challenges in relation to research and finding relevant evidence. For questions regarding the on-line submission process, kaat.cumps@ecco-org.eu Fellowships The EONS Spring Convention Committee will award a number of fellowship grants to nurses from countries with limited resources to attend the Spring Convention in Geneva, Switzerland. Applicants should submit a short CV and a letter explaining the benefit for them to attend the Spring Convention. The application should be accompanied by a letter from the Head of Department stating that the applicant is not the recipient of any other financial support. Applicants must be fluent in English/French and/or German. 12 Each fellowship will include: Free registration to the meeting Free accommodation in one of the selected hotels (arriving Wednesday and leaving Sunday) Free admission to the Presidential dinner on Friday evening 500 EUR travel grant to meet the travel expenses. The 500 EUR will be paid after the conference upon submission of receipts. The Organising Committee will decide on the recipients of such fellowship grants. 16 Group registration Companies that would like to sponsor the registration fees of a group of participants attending the Spring Convention should contact Riitta Kettunen (Riitta.kettunen@ecco-org.eu) at the EONS-6 secretariat. A group consists of minimum 10 persons. Smaller groups will be handled as individual registrations. Registration shall be coordinated by one identified group contact person representing a pharmaceutical/product company or travel agent. Social programme Welcome reception The Welcome reception will be organised on Thursday 27 March 2008 from 18:30 to 20:00 and will take place in the Centre International de Conférences Genève (CICG). Presidential dinner On the occasion of the Spring Convention, a Presidential dinner is organised on Friday 28 March 2008, 19:30. The dinner will take place at the Attique Restaurant at OMM, in Geneva. Dans de nombreux pays européens, les soins sont aujourd hui essentiellement prodigués en ambulatoire ou en externe, avec l évolution de l utilisation des ressources que cela entraîne. Il s avère donc non seulement essentiel de rafraîchir ses connaissances sur les traitements existants et les nouveaux traitements, mais également d explorer les avancées en matière de gestion des soins aux patients et aux familles dans différents environnements. En outre, les infirmiers et infirmières sont de plus en plus souvent amenés à assumer de nouveaux rôles professionnels, par exemple la pratique de soins de nature médicale. Voilà qui suscite des interrogations sur l orientation de l évolution de l infirmerie en oncologie et les rôles que les infirmiers et infirmières doivent déléguer sans que l excellence des soins n en soit compromise. Cette Convention de printemps 2008 aborde les concepts de changement, de pratique médicale et d évolution de la pratique. En tant qu équipe, nous avons tiré des enseignements des succès des précédentes Conventions de printemps ; nous avons augmenté le nombre de séances interactives de formation, ainsi que celui des symposiums sur les diverses avancées cliniques. Nous nous sommes efforcés d équilibrer les méthodes de formation utilisées, incluant des conférences plénières par des orateurs invités et la lecture d exposés sélectionnés portant sur des sujets liés à la thématique de la Convention. Et pour l approche interactive et formatrice, des forums de discussion et des activités liées aux ateliers seront organisés tout au long de ces trois jours. Le programme proposé cette année est conçu pour aider les infirmiers et les infirmières à développer la pratique des soins en oncologie et à mettre en œuvre le changement. Cette 6e Convention de printemps s annonce comme une excellente opportunité d exploration, de partage, d implication et de participation à l art de l infirmerie en oncologie en Europe. 19 Atelier sur l introduction à la recherche infirmière Samedi 29 mars 2008 (8h00 12h30) La recherche influence la pratique: démystification de la recherche Objectifs Cet atelier a pour but d aider les infirmiers et infirmières à comprendre le processus de recherche et de leur apprendre à l utiliser pour modifier la pratique en oncologie. L innovation encourage le changement. C est pourquoi la recherche est un outil important pour le développement de l infirmerie. Ce symposium s adresse à tous les novices en matière de recherche, à ceux qui se demandent comment l aborder. La recherche n est pas une activité solitaire ; les cliniciens y jouent un rôle essentiel, qu il s agisse d orienter le calendrier de recherche, de faire émerger des questions, d influencer la pratique ou d initier son développement. Le savoir et la compréhension naissent d une meilleure connaissance de l expérience du patient, souvent dans des domaines très difficiles. On en sait de plus en plus sur les cancers, ainsi que sur les interventions, la prise en charge des symptômes et la prolongation du parcours des patients cancéreux. La recherche et les preuves ne sont qu un des outils permettant de fournir des soins de qualité. Groupe cible: qui doit s inscrire?
