3 Welcome WELCOME TO THE FEM PARLIAMENT! For the second time the CADFEM Users Meeting International Congress on FEM Technology and the ANSYS CFX & ICEM CFD Conference are taking place simultaneously. This joint conference reflects the impressive enhancements in the coupled application of structural and fluid mechanics. More than 200 lectures covering nearly all fields of numerical simulation will be presented. The scope of the presentations ranges from statics to dynamics, heat transfer to acoustics, and electromagnetics to coupled fields. In addition there are sessions dealing with current topics such as composites, optimization, crash and impact, process simulation in manufacturing, and virtual product development. Biomechanics will play an increasingly important role in the future. Therefore, we have implemented a full one-day session on this topic. Two full day sessions will cover CFD topics. Industry updates on turbulence modelling, turbomachinery flows, multi-phase flows, and multi-physics applications will be presented on the afternoon of the first day. These will be complemented by CFX Live and ANSYS Live, two sessions in which the practical usage of CFX and Workbench Simulation will be demonstrated. Thursday is devoted to lectures by our customers about CFX, its integration in process chains, and special topics like acoustics, and coupled analysis. You will also have the possibility of attending workshops on various topics in crashworthiness and on Diffpack, participating in the ANSYS programming course given by Dr. John Swanson, or exchanging experiences in the 1 st Forum on Design, Analysis, and Testing, organized by Dr. Dirschmid, a former CAE-manager of AUDI AG. On Friday, Users Meetings will inform you on latest developments in ANSYS, CFX, ICEM CFD, LS-DYNA, FTI-Solutions, Moldflow, and VPS (VirtualPaintShop). Users will have the opportunity to discuss new challenges and ideas with the software developers. We suggest that you study the conference program carefully. Some lectures in sessions that are not in your first choice of sessions may also be of interest to you. Our chairpersons are requested to strictly follow the schedule. Lectures will be given in slots of 20 or 40 minutes, respectively, and will include a five minute discussion period. This should give you sufficient time to switch between presentations in different sessions. All lectures with English titles will be given in English, the others in German but with presentation slides in English. Lectures are an important aspect of our conference. However, you should also reserve time to visit our exhibitors or talk to your friends in the CAE community. Please take the opportunity during the conference breaks and on Wednesday evening. You might miss printed documentation this year. Based on surveys of past conferences, we have concluded that proceedings are not wanted. All conference participants will be mailed a CD containing the final papers a few weeks after the conference. Please remember: Our conference is held in the former assembly room of the German Bundestag. Therefore we chose the motto FEM Parliament. We encourage you to actively take part in lively discussions on the topics presented by the speakers. Last, but not least we would like to thank the authors and partners for their contributions, and our sponsors ANSYS, HP, Intel, SGI, Moldflow, FTI, LSTC, science + computing, and CoCreate for their generous support. 4 A Tour through the Program Plenary Sessions 23 rd CADFEM USERS MEETING 2005 INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON FEM TECHNOLOGY WITH ANSYS CFX & ICEM CFD CONFERENCE Because we have decided not to print out abstracts, we would like to help you organize your schedule by presenting a brief overview of the sessions. Our tour will highlight a few presentations from each session, to make you even more interested in joining them. A detailed conference agenda can be found on pages 10 to 22. SESSIONS PLENARY SESSION OPENING Wednesday, 10:00 12:20 h, Plenary Hall It is a tradition that our Plenary Session covers topics beyond the normal scope of such a conference. We are very pleased that Prof. Erwin Stein, a world-renowned scientist in Computational Mechanics, accepted our invitation to give a keynote lecture. Prof. Stein will present his studies on Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, one of the leading intellectual figures of the 17th century. Leibniz s discrete solution to the Brachistochrone problem posted by Johann Bernoulli can be seen as the precursor of the finite element method in time and space. Prof. Stein has taught at the University of Hanover for many years. He has received a number of honorary doctorates, is the author of numerous publications, and is one of the editors of the three volumes of Encyclopaedia Mechanica, which capture the latest knowledge in computational mechanics. Another tradition is to have one or two presentations from customers on challenging simulation tasks. Dr. Mirjam Sick of VA TECH HYDRO will present applications of recent CFD developments in hydraulic turbine design. Topics include transient flows with free surfaces, tip vortex flows in Kaplan turbine blades, and transient vortex ropes in the draft tubes of Francis and pump turbines. Prof. Stefano Odorizzi will speak about challenging CAE applications in civil engineering. Samec Karel will present a revolutionary technology developed at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland for the transmutation of radioactive waste from the nuclear industry. Frank Vogel will bring to your attention Diffpack, a toolset for the solution of general partial differential equations. Whenever you have a problem to solve which is defined by a differential equation that is not covered by your FEM software, Diffpack may help you to generate the missing finite element and enhance or customize your FEM code. The opening session will be concluded with a look into the future of ANSYS presented by Jim Cashman, President and CEO of ANSYS. PLENARY SESSION CLOSING Friday, 14:00 16:00 h, Plenary Hall There is a growing interest in the integration of plastics and structural CAE simulation. Ken Welch, Vice-President of Sales and Marketing of Moldflow Corporation, will present the current status and future developments of interfaces from Moldflow to CAE programs such as ANSYS and LS-DYNA. A conference always needs financial support. Many thanks go therefore to Hewlett Packard (HP), one of our main sponsors. Brian Lowe from the HP headquarters in Cupertino, California, will give a short address on trends in the computer technology. Knowledge management will play a key role in future development, and Prof. Stefani Bandini from the University of Milano will explain its value in a motor sports application. Jim Bungener, member of the famous America s Cup winners Team Alinghi, will demonstrate the role of CFD in yacht design. And finally, we are very pleased to welcome Dr. John Swanson, with whom we had a long and friendly business relationship since 1982, when Günter Müller started as European ANSYS Support Distributor. We are all very keen to hear John s FEA stories of the past. 4

5 A Tour through the Program Conference Overview / Sessions STATICS / DYNAMICS / HEAT TRANSFER SESSION Wednesday, 14:00 20:00 h, Plenary Hall Thursday, 08:20 12:40 h, Hall AB Structural analysis is still the most common field of numerical simulation. Applications are presented for machines and engines as well as aircrafts. Papers deal with linear and non-linear steady state and transient analyses, including ones with loads due to temperature changes. The lectures are diverse, covering for instance the comparison of test and analysis of the vertical tail of an AIRBUS aircraft under ultimate load, the transient analysis of a diesel engine crankshaft, or the development process of fuel injection components using numerical simulation. Presentations focus both on ANSYS and Workbench. Please note: There are also lectures covering optimization and fatigue issues. CIVIL ENGINEERING Wednesday, 14:00 20:00 h, Hall G ANSYS is heavily used by civil engineers. A special session is therefore devoted to the investigation of concrete, steel, and timber structures under static as well as seismic loading. Prof. Stefano Odorizzi from Padua will report on the installation of the new roof of the Olympic Stadium in Athens. COMPOSITES Wednesday, 14:00 20:00 h, Hall E Not only in aircraft design, but also in the automotive field, composite materials are gaining more and more acceptance. In addition to reliable design verification, it is also important to validate numerical methods able to deal with the complexity of composite materials and their design. These methods may range from investigations of stability problems to applications dealing with crack propagation in case of delamination problems. Additionally, simulation tools like ESAcomp from Componeering, are specifically designed to investigate composite laminates in detail.
