1 GMST 302 Advanced German Spring 2017, M + TH 1 2:20 pm Anna Jaesche Office: Clearihue D250A Office Hours: Wed 10:30-11:30am and Th 2:30-3:30pm ajaesche@uvic.ca Course description: This course is intended for students who have successfully completed GSMT 302 or its equivalent, and who wish to expand and increase their knowledge of spoken and written German. This course will focus on contemporary social, political, and cultural topics in German-speaking countries. Required Texts: Studio [21] B1 by Hermann Funk, et al. Cornelsen, first edition, ISBN Course Evaluation: Attendance, participation, preparation (15%) 4 writing assignments (4 x 5 = 20%) 2 vocab quizzes (2 x 5% = 10%) Podcast recording (20%) 2 extracurricular activities (5%) Praktikum (15%) Final oral exam (15%) Assignments: Attendance, participation, and preparation: Students are expected to come to class prepared for group work and class discussions, completing exercises and readings before each class, as well as doing the assigned homework. Students will be asked to work with partners and groups, to engage with each other s answers, and present a summary of their discussion to the rest of the class. Writing assignments: Students will be assigned a number of homework exercises from the textbook, as well as reading and writing assignments, and are required to complete them on the assigned dates. Vocab quizzes: Students will take two 20min. in-class vocab quizzes based on the Vokabeltaschenbuch. Podcast recordings: Students will be asked to work with a partner on a topic of their interest and to record a 10min. podcast in the form of an interview, a newscast, or a documentary show, and to hand in an accompanying script. The audio files and the scripts should be ed to the instructor by March 27th Extracurricular activities: Students are required to participate in a minimum of two extracurricular activities related to German, Austrian, or Swiss culture. A list of possible activities will be provided at the beginning of the term and will be updated throughout the semester (please keep checking back).

2 Students will be required to show proof of the events attended (pay stubs, etc.) and write a very brief report (50 words max. in German) on what they learned, to be handed in to the instructor at any point before the end of term (latest on Friday, March 31 st ). Other suggestions are always welcome, but have to be approved by the instructor in advance. Praktikum: As part of this course, students can do an internship (Sprachpraktikum) with the Victoria German School (http.// for 2-3 weeks. The time commitment is between 6 and 9 hours in total. At the end of the Sprachpraktikum, students will write a report (500 words) providing a summary of their duties while reflecting on their teaching and learning experiences. For this internship, students are required to fill out a Victoria Police Department Police Information Check during the first week of the semester (available at: Alternatively, students can also organize a German/Austrian/Swiss event, workshop, film screening, or guest lecture open to students and faculty during the semester. The purpose of this assignment is to allow students to develop their organizational and community skills to engage with Germanic culture in a way that benefits the greater community. A sign-up sheet will be circulated. Final oral exam: Students will draw an exam topic cord based on the themes, facts, historical events, films, literary works, and people covered in the course. Students will research the assigned topic to prepare a 5 min. presentation, and present it, followed by a 5min. discussion. Topic cards will be available in advance to give students enough time to prepare. Oral exams take place during the last week of classes. Note (from the University Calendar): An A+, A or A- is earned by work which is technically superior, shows mastery of the subject matter, and in the case of an A+ offers original insight and/or goes beyond course expectations. Normally achieved by a minority of students. Classroom Conduct: Electronic devices may only be used for course material. No headphones. Missed assignments and exams can only be rewritten with a doctor s note. It is imperative that you come to class prepared for the group work and discussions. This course is based on inter-teaching techniques and peer communication. Do not let your class mates down my coming to class late or unprepared. 3 Registration: Waitlisted students must attend the class in which they wish to register in order to be admitted into the course. Students who do not attend class within the first seven calendar days of the course s beginning may be deregistered. Add/Drop Deadlines: It is the student s responsibility to attend to ADD/DROP dates as published on page 6 in the Calendar and the Undergraduate Registration Guide and Timetable. You will not necessarily be dropped automatically from a class that you not attend. Placement: Students are expected to be honest and forthcoming about their level of German knowledge. The department reserves the right to place students with previous knowledge of German at an appropriate level. Absences and Incomplete Work: Regular attendance, completion of in-class tests and the punctual submission of work are important and mandatory components of completing the course successfully. Withdrawals and Deferrals: Students who miss substantial amounts of class and assignments without documentation will be asked to withdraw, as they will receive an N at the end of the semester. Students are to familiarize with the withdrawl dates on page 6 of the academic calendar. In situations in which a student cannot complete the course requirements and a deferral is not a viable option, he or she must have completed 80% of the course requirements for an AEG (aegrotat) grade to be assigned. A Note on Academic Integrity and Plagiarism: Actions such as plagiarism, multiple submissions, falsifying materials used in academic evaluations, cheating or aiding others to cheat violate University policies on academic integrity and are considered serious offences. You must inform yourself about the university regulations (see the UVic Policy on Academic Integrity in the University Calendar). It is forbidden to use automated translation programs (such as google) or have advanced German speakers edit, rework, and/or write your assignments
