Welcome to our Professional Development Program for Winter As doctoral candidate or postdoc of one of our member programs you gain access to our workshops according to your program regulations. If you are a doctoral candidate or postdoc of Freie Universität, or any other university, but not member of Dahlem Research School, you are also very welcome to register. Whether you choose to take part in one of our transferable skills trainings, our career development workshops, or any other of our offerings, the Professional Development Program is designed to support you in any aspect of your career that goes beyond the core activities of your individual research areas. Our program will provide you with the tools necessary to succeed in your dissertation project, to enhance key competencies and maximize your potential, to prepare for a career in industry, academia, or the public sector. Dahlem Research School (DRS) is the center for the promotion of junior researchers at Freie Universität Berlin. The center develops strategies and quality management concepts to enhance the support for junior researchers. The DRS fosters careers from the beginning of the doctorate until appointment and facilitates career paths outside academia. With currently about 900 doctoral candidates, a third of whom comes from abroad, DRS fosters transdisciplinary research in an international context. This gives you the chance to get to know your peers from different disciplines. We strongly encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities and to expand your horizons! 10 FAQ'S CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (PDP) 1. Who Can Participate in the DRS Professional Development Program? The Professional Development Program is open to the following target groups. Available spaces are first given to members of priority group 1 and then to those of priority group 2: Priority group 1 Doctoral candidates and postdocs of DRS doctoral programs Postdocs of the DRS fellowship lines HONORS, POINT and COFUND. Priority group 2 Doctoral candidates of Freie Universität who are not members of DRS doctoral programs Other postdocs of Freie Universität who do not belong to priority group 1 Doctoral candidates and postdocs of other universities 2. How do I find suitable courses? Each course description provides information about the targeted subject area, skill level and the format of the course. Use these indicators to find courses that are appropriate for your educational objectives and developmental needs. 1. Course is related to your subject area: Please note that some workshops are specifically designed for participants of certain subject areas, e.g. the Natural and Life Sciences. 2. Course format meets your needs: The majority of our workshops are trainings. For some topics you can avail yourself of additional coaching sessions and open door talks. 3. Course matches your skill level: Does the course advance your level of skill and meet your particular professional needs? For each course you will see a scale with four circles, symbolizing from left to right the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of the doctorate. Courses for postdocs, junior group leaders and junior professors are marked by the fourth circle. From the following examples you can see which courses target which levels: 10

Courses of the Professional Development Program Registration opens online approximately three weeks before the semester begins. Members of priority group 1 are allowed to book immediately. Members of priority group 2 are allowed to book when the semester begins. In order to register for a course, please log in to the DRS Course Booking Platform: As member of a DRS doctoral program, you will receive an notification with your account data. You will have to verify your data before your first course registration. In case you are not a member of a DRS doctoral program and have booked DRS courses before, you will also receive an notification with your account data. New users have to create an account before their first course booking. You will receive an confirmation once your booking is processed. If the course is full, your name will be added to the waiting list and you will be notified via as soon as a space becomes available. Courses of fu:stat The fu:stat courses in statistical theory and software are open to doctoral candidates and postdocs of all universities. If you are enrolled as a doctoral candidate, you ll receive a discount on your course fee. For doctoral candidates who are member of a DRS doctoral program the offer is free of charge. Please register directly via the fu:stat website: Members of a DRS program have to indicate their membership in the online registration form. 11

12 4. How do I cancel my registration? If you are unable to attend a course you have booked, you must request withdrawal at the latest 21 days prior to the course via to support@drs.fu-berlin.de. For cancellations we receive later than 21 days before the beginning of the course, you/your doctoral program will be charged with 100% of the courses costs. The number of funded course days you are entitled to book by your program/department will be reduced accordingly. For cancellations we receive at the latest 21 days before the beginning of the course, you/your doctoral program will not be charged. The number of course days that you are entitled to book by your program/department will not be reduced or your course fee will be refunded. Cancellations due to illness of you or your child are only acceptable on production of a valid medical certificate which must be sent by mail or within one week after the course. In this case you/ your doctoral program will not be charged. The number of funded course days that you are entitled to book will not be reduced or your course fee will be refunded. 5. Do I have to pay for a course? Our Professional Development Program consists of high-quality courses taught by expert trainers and coaches. The Dahlem Research School therefore asks for a contribution of 100 per participant per course day. For members of priority group 1 the DRS doctoral programs of Freie Universität Berlin often cover this contribution. The number of courses you can register for may be limited by your doctoral program. If you want to exceed the designated number of course days, you may ask your program coordinator if there is additional funding available. If there is no funding available, you have to pay the course fee yourself. In this case, we can only accept your registration if we receive full payment before the start of the course via bank transfer. You will be first put on the waiting list and asked to transfer the course fee. You will receive the confirmation for participation after we have received your payment. There is no limit to the number of courses you may register for. Doctoral candidates and postdocs who are not funded by a DRS program have to pay the course fees themselves. 12

13 Please note! We suggest that you ask your department, your supervisor or the gender equality officer of your department if there is funding available for your course participation. 6. How many courses can I register for? If there is funding available for you, the number of courses you can register for may be limited by your doctoral program. Please contact your program coordinator to find out how many course days you are entitled to book before you register online. If you want to exceed the designated number of course days, you can ask your program for further financing or pay the fee yourself. If there is no funding available for you, you may also register for courses, but you will have to pay the course fee yourself. There is no limit to the number of courses you may register for. 7. How much attendance is needed in order to receive a Certificate of Participation? To receive a confirmation of participation, you must attend at least 80% of the sessions and participate actively in them. You can download your confirmation of participation on the DRS Course Booking Platform after your participation has been confirmed. 6. DRS Doctoral Candidates: How will my attendance be accredited? Dahlem Research School offers and administers its interdisciplinary course program but does NOT award credits for the courses. Each doctoral program has its own rules on awarding ECTS credits for courses taken at DRS. Individual training records are made available by Dahlem Research School to each program coordinator at the end of each semester. After you have completed your doctoral studies your program coordinator will issue to you a transcript of records including all courses taken as part of the curriculum of your doctoral program. Please note that you will not receive a separate certificate for each course. 7. What Happens to My Data? Participants' data is stored in a database at Dahlem Research School (DRS) for the purpose of recording attendance at workshops, pro-viding statistical information and maintaining training records. At regular intervals, individual training records are made available to the institution which is funding your space in the course program. This is your doctoral program, and in some cases your department ("Fachbereich"). 13

14 Non-personal data is used as the basis for our internal quality management and control. It is our goal to continuously improve and develop our services. FUBRIGHT 1. Why are some FU- Bright offers only open to international doctoral candidates of Freie Universität Berlin? 2. How do I register? 3. How much do I have to pay? 4. How much attendance is needed in order to receive a Certificate of Participation? FUBright for international doctoral candidates is promoted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Research Council (DFG). The overarching aim of the project is to help international doctoral candidates cope with the additional challenges they may face as doctoral candidates in a foreign country and culture. The project also aims to support their transition to employment in Germany. Upcoming FUBright events are announced on the FUBright website. In order to register for a FUBright event, please log in to the DRS Course Booking Platform. New users have to create an account before their first course booking. We might need to request further documentation to verify your status (such as a scan/copy of your student ID card). FUBright events are free of charge. Only those events indicated as workshops can be certified. To receive a confirmation of participation, you must attend at least 80% of the sessions and participate actively in them. You can download your confirmation of participation on the DRS Course Booking Platform after your participation has been confirmed. DAHLEM RESEARCH MENTORING PROGRAM (DREAM) The seminars of the DREAM mentoring program are only open to mentees of the DREAM program. 1. How do I register? In order to register for a DREAM seminar, please log in to the DRS Course Booking Platform. New users have to create an account before their first course booking. 2. How much do I have to pay? DREAM seminars are free of charge. 3. How much attendance is needed in order to receive a Certificate of Participation? You will receive a certificate of participation in the DREAM mentoring program at the end of your mentoring year. To receive a certificate of participation, you must attend at least 80% of the sessions and participate actively in them. RESEARCHER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (RDP) The Researcher Development Program is open to researchers with a completed doctoral degree or successful dissertation defense. Participants are also required to have an affiliation with Freie Universität Berlin (e.g. through a work contract, but also through shared appointments with partner institutions). 1. How do I register? In order to register for a course, please go to the RDP program on the DRS website: (The program registration will later on also be possible through a log in to the DRS Course Booking Platform: You will be able to connect to this platform via our website.) If we cannot verify your status ourselves, we might need to request further documentation from you (such as a scan/copy of your doctoral diploma). You will receive an confirmation once your booking is processed. If the course is full, your name will be added to the waiting list and you will be notified via as soon as a space becomes available. 16

During the pilot phase, the RDP training courses are free of charge for members of the Freie Universität Berlin 3. How much attendance is needed in order to receive a Certificate of Participation? To receive a confirmation of participation, you have to attend at least 80% of the total training time and participate actively in the sessions. At the time you attend the workshop, you will be able to request a confirmation for your participation by checking it on the attendance list. We reserve the right to cancel courses on short notice if there is a legitimate reason to do so, e.g., illness of the trainer or coach. 21 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Supporting Individual Career Paths Knowledge and competence in your field of research are vital foundations for a successful doctorate. Equally important is a range of key competencies that are crucial not only for your academic development, but also in other professional contexts: Communicating adequately in different settings, organizing yourself and your work, and mastering IT are examples of this. The fact that only a maximum of 1 out of 10 doctoral researchers continue their career in academia highlights the need for a varied skill set even more. The Professional Development Program of Dahlem Research School takes this into account and helps you to prepare for different career paths. On the basis of the principles of research integrity, the workshops hone your reading, writing and teaching skills and support you in publishing and presenting your research and defending your dissertation. 21

22 Transferable Skills Management Competencies Career Development Management Competency courses give you the opportunity to acquire and improve additional skills that complement your academic performance and prepare you to take on responsible positions in your future career. You will find workshops focusing on a range of IT tools, support for motivating and organizing yourself, as well as strategies for improving your networking skills. Each career requires individual planning. Our program provides you with courses that support you along the way, from exploring your options and choosing a career path to applying for jobs. Other offerings give you a chance to gain new perspectives by e.g. getting acquainted with the basics of economics. Within our Professional Development Program you can choose between different educational formats depending on your needs and career goals. Training Coaching Mentoring Training sessions constitute the major part of our program. In oneto two-day highly interactive workshops our experienced trainers instruct you in achieving expertise and mastering new skills in various fields, for instance about the best way to present yourself and your research results, teach at university level or organise your time. Coaching in small groups aims at developing your awareness and the power to reflect on your existing skills and knowledge and helping you to find the best way to enhance your performance. Our qualified coaches guide you in finding, trying and evaluating effective motivation strategies for completing your doctoral studies or in determining your professional potential in order to devise a suitable career strategy. Mentoring aims to support female doctoral candidates in exploring and pursuing their career options. It brings them together with experienced professional mentors who offer guidance, encouragement and support. Mentors and mentees meet regularly throughout a one-year program and participate in specially designed workshops, coachings and networking events. 22

23 Open Door Talks is a lecture series addressing all students, doctoral candidates and postdocs. Experts from different occupational fields share their individual experiences and discuss with you how to make the right career move. Other Open Door Talks deal with funding opportunities for research stays abroad or postdoctoral projects. Our mission is to constantly improve our Professional Development Program and to enhance the quality of our doctoral candidates' learning and development. Trainers and coaches are recruited and selected on the basis of their professional experience and outstanding qualifications. The course program is regularly reviewed and revised to meet the current needs and profiles of the course participants. Course assessment ensures the evaluator s anonymity. The results of course assessments are compared to those of other workshops from the same semester and analysed with the trainers in a positive assessment climate, ensuring that feedback from the participants leads to concrete improvements. 26 RESEARCH INTEGRITY Supporting Good Scientific Practice Berlin-Brandenburg Cooperation One of the core responsibilities of Dahlem Research School is to promote research integrity as the basis of all academic work. From the very beginning of your doctorate we support you in obtaining strategies and gaining confidence in conducting and presenting your research according to the standards of good scientific practice. Since winter term 2014/15, we are closely cooperating with Humboldt Graduate School (HGS), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Potsdam Graduate School (PoGS), Universität Potsdam. This cooperation allows us to expand and vary our offers and tailor them to specific disciplines. This Term's Joint Key Courses Our joint key courses will introduce you to the main principles of research integrity in your field, i.e. conducting and communicating your research honestly and openly, employing reliable and accountable methods and being fair towards your colleagues and their work. 28 SCIENTIFIC DATA PROTECTION Research Integrity TRAINING for doctoral candidates Fee: free of charge Objectives Content Technologies to exchange data are advancing rapidly (e.g. cloud computing, Dropbox). However, data protection laws remain and personal rights need to be respected. It is important to be aware of potential threats when exchanging scientific data. At the same time, it is helpful to know how to benefit using state-of-the-art information-sharing technologies. The course aims to tackle both aspects. Initially, an overview about national and international data protection laws will be provided. In a practical part, ways to secure public data exchange will be demonstrated and tested by the participants. Furthermore, tools and platforms for efficient data organization and knowledge exchange are shown. The course concludes with a discussion round about scientific data sharing policies: Data hugging versus open access. It supports later data sharing, which can lead to increased citation and reuse. In addition, more and more funding organizations expect a data management plan during the application process. This workshop informs about data management planning and services at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Technical, legal and financial aspects of research data management are covered. 33 IMPROVED READING EFFIZIENTER LESEN Reading TRAINING for doctoral candidates and postdocs Fee 200 Objective Reading English or German texts faster and more efficiently means better comprehension, more text retention and less mind-wandering if you do it with the right techniques. For the specific challenge of reading scientific texts there will be an exercise at the end of the workshop for which you can bring your own text examples. Teaching at university is often well intended but does not always reach the aspired outcome the learning of the student. PDP - ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE This workshop will enable you to do better. After the course you will have reflected on three basic concepts of teaching and learning (theme centred interaction, winning active partners and constructive alignment) defined your role as a teacher (facilitator) in terms of learning outcome oriented teaching started the didactical planning of a course/session by defining learning objectives and designing appropriate learning activities Content The workshop covers the basics of professional university teaching: the shift from teaching to learning. The participants will improve their methodological knowledge about the teaching learning interaction and how that setting can be influenced effectively. The aim is to reach a level of learner centered teaching that leads to a deep-level learning approach on the side of the students. Hence, interaction with and motivation of the students is in the focus of this course.
