3 Abstract The first part of this thesis addressesthe chemistry of cationic rhodium complexes in the gas phase. Gaseous ions are produced by electrospray ionization and studied subsequently in a two-stage mass spectrometer. With electrospray ionization, a very mild ionization method is available which allows the transfer of various ions from Solution to the gas phase without fragmentationof the ions occuring during the process. A variety of cationic rhodium(i) complexes are known to homogeneously catalyze hydrogenation reactions. Complexes with the composition [RhL2]+ (L = phosphine ligand) are catalytically active in Solution and attempts were made in this work to use electrospray ionization mass spectrometry to study them in the gas phase. We observed reversible hydrogenation of 1,3-butadiene by the [Rh(PMe3)2H2]+complex. From a mechanistic point of view, the hydride route appears to be operative for the complexes that were studied. The gaseous complexes behave similarly to the analogous complexes in Solution.For example, stabilizationof bis-phosphinecomplexes in Solution oecurs by coordinationof solvent molecules. In the gas phase, this stabilization is achieved by reversible cyclometallation of the phosphine ligands. In the absence of solvent, the choice of appropriate ligands is even more important than it would be otherwise. We found that only alkyl phosphine complexes can add hydrogen. Aryl phosphine ligands are not capable of hydrogenaddition. When studying rhodium bipyridyl complexes, we discovered the formation of a phosphaethyne complex in the gas phase. By means of CID thresholdmeasurements, the bond dissociation energy of the phosphaethyne to the [Rh(bipy)]+ fragment was determined to be 46.5 ± 3.5 kcal/mol. This is in agreement with additional computational work. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry is a powerful analytical tool. However, when studying reactions like the hydrogenation of olefins, the method does not allow direct detection of any neutral products. In order to fill this gap, and to find out whether ion-molecule reactions in the gas phase could be used as a synthetic tool, we attempted to build and operate a spray reactor. Some preliminary results with simple catalyst Systems are presented.

4 n The second part of this thesis is concerned with synthetic approaches to an organic model Compound for the diamond surface. This Compound is of interest because it would allow the study of radical reactions proposed to be responsiblefor the growth of diamond during chemical vapor deposition (CVD), a process widely used to produce synthetic diamond. A thorough understanding of the processes occurring during diamond growth would allow the improvement of the CVD method, leading to higher quality materials.

5 m Zusammenfassung Der erste Teil dieser Arbeit befasst sich mit der Chemie von kationischen Rhodiumkomplexen in der Gasphase. GasförmigeIonen werden durch Elektrospray- Ionisierung erzeugt und anschliessend in einem Zwei-Stufen Massenspektrometer untersucht. Die Elektrospray-Ionisierungist eine äusserst milde Ionisierungsmethode und ermöglicht den Transfer von zahlreichen Ionen aus einer Lösung in die Gasphase, ohne dass dabeifragmentierung der Ionen auftritt. Eine Vielzahl von kationischen Rhodium(I)-Komplexen ist bekannt, welche homogene Hydrierungsreaktionen katalysieren. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde der Versuch unternommen, Komplexe der Zusammensetzung [RhL2]+ (L = Phosphinligand), von welchen bekannt ist, dass sie in Lösung katalytisch aktiv sind, in der Gasphase zu untersuchen.wir beobachteten die reversible Hydrierung von 1,3-Butadien durch den [Rh(PMe3)2H2]+-Komplex.Für die hier betrachteten Katalysatorsysteme scheint aus mechanistischer Sicht die Hydridroute gültig zu sein. Die gasförmigen Komplexe verhalten sich ähnlich wie die analogen Komplexe in Lösung. Bis-Phosphin Komplexe in Lösung werden beispielsweise durch Koordinierung von Sofvensmolekülen stabilisiert. In der Gasphase wird diese Stabilisierung durch reversible Cyclometallierung der Phosphinliganden gewährleistet. In Abwesenheit von Solvensmolekülen ist die Wahl von geeignetenliganden noch ausschlaggebender als sie in Lösung ohnehin bereits ist. So fanden wir, dass nur Alkylphosphin-Komplexe imstande sind, Wasserstoff zu addieren. Arylphosphinliganden sind dazu nicht in der Lage. Beim Studium von Rhodium-Bipyridyl-Komplexen wurde die Bildung eines Phosphaethin-Komplexes nachgewiesen. Mit Hilfe von CID-Schwellenmessungen wurde die Bindungsenergie des Phosphaethins an das [Rh(bipy)l+-Fragment zu 46.5 ± 3.5 kcal/mol bestimmt. Begleitende Berechnungen sind in Übereinstimmung mit dem Experiment. Elektrospray-Ionisierungs-Massenspektrometrie stellt ein leistungsfähiges analytisches Werkzeug dar. Wenn aber Reaktionen wie die Hydrierung von Olefinen untersucht werden, ist die Methode nicht imstande, neutrale Produkte direkt

6 IV nachzuweisen. Um diese Lücke zu schliessen und um festzustellen, ob Ionen-Molekül Reaktionen als synthetisches Werkzeug dienen könnten, wurde der Versuch unternommen, einen Sprayreaktor zu konstruieren und betreiben. Resultate mit einfachen Katalysatorsystemenwerden vorgestellt. Einige vorläufige Der zweite Teil dieser Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Synthese einer organischen Modellverbindungder Diamantoberfläche. Diese Verbindung ist von Interesse,weil sie das Studium von Radikalreaktionenermöglichen würde, von denen man annimmt, dass sie für das Wachstum von Diamant während des Chemical Vapor Depositions (CVD), einem verbreiteten Prozess zur Herstellung von künstlichendiamanten,verantwortlich sind. Ein tieferes Verständnis der Prozesse, die während des Diamantwachstums statt finden, würde eine Verbesserung der CVD-Methode ermöglichen und somit zu höherwertigen Produkten führen.
