3 1.05 ABSTRACT TmSe (NaCl-structure) exhibits a large nonstoichiometric range ( mol Tm/mol Se). Variation of nonstoichiometry leads to a change of the mixed valence of Tm between Tm (0.87 mol Tm/mol Se) and Tm ' (1.05 mol Tm/mol Se) as determined from lattice constants and ionic radii. Investigations of the defect-structure show a concentra tion of 2-3?o Schottky-vacancies for stoichiometric TmSe. In the Se-excess range nonstoichiometric Tm-vacancies are formed, whereas the concentration of Schottky pairs decreases. At the phase boundary (0.87 mol Tm/mol Se) the total vacancy concentration is approx. 8?o, i.e. 1 vacancy per 4 unit cells. In the Tm-excess range the investigations indicate that all vacancies of the stoi chiometric TmSe are filled with Tm. This leads to the formation of octahedral clusters of 7 Tm-ions in which the Tm-Tm distance (2.85 A) is half of the distance in TmSe and about 20?o smaller than in Tm-metal. The concentration of these clusters at the phaseboundary is 2.5?o, i.e. 1 cluster per 10 unit cells. The stability ranges in the nonstoichiometric range have been investigated by hightemperature DTA, reaction calorimetry, chemical and X-ray analyses. The T-x diagram is a maximum-melting-point phasediagram. The congruently melting composition (0.96 mol Tm/mol Se) has a melting point of 2065 ± 10 C. In the nonstoichio metric range two phase transitions were found whose nature could not be determined because of the high transi tion temperatures involved. Below 860 C a miscibility gap ( mol Tm/mol Se) occurs. The miscibility gap indicates the repulsion of the limi ting compositions which differ only in the valency of the

4 Tm-ion. It can therefore be concluded, that trivalent and mixedvalent TmSe are repulsing each other. A continu ous transition from trivalent to mixedvalent TmSe by controlled nonstoichiometry is therefore not possible. The stability ranges at room-temperature have been in vestigated by reaction calorimetry. The relative stabili ties, obtained by solution calorimetry in 4N HC1, show three stability ranges with the most stable compositions 0.90, 0.99 and 1.04 mol Tm/mol Se. The miscibility gap is clearly shown. The stoichiometric phase (Tmn ggse) is metastable with respect to an equilibrium of Tm an^e and Tm, The difference in n/,se. stability between TrrK' +Se and hypothetical is 42 Tm^+nSe kcal/mol (1.8 ev per Tm). This corresponds to a destabilisation of the mixedvalent state of 29?o with respect to the trivalent state. A preliminary enthalpy of formation of Tmn ggse is determined to 433 ± 30 kj/mol (103 ± 7 kcal/mol) by fluorine combustion calorimetry.

5 -8-1. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG TmSe (NaCl-Struktur) hat einen breiten Nichtstochiometriebereich von 0.87 bis 1.05 mol Tm/mol Se. Als Funktion der Nichtstbchiometrie variiert der Wert der gemischten Valenz von Tm bei Bestimmung aus Gitterkonstanten und Ionenradien zvi/ischen 3+ (0.87 mol Tm/mol Se) und (1.05 mol Tm/mol Se). Untersuchungen der Fehlordnung zeigen fur stbchiometrisches TmSe 2-3% Leerstellen (Schottkypaare). Im Se-reichen Gebiet treten zusatzliche Tm-Leerstellen auf, wahrend die Konzentration der Schottkypaare abnimmt. An der Phasengrenze bei 0.87 mol Tm/mol Se betragt die Leerstellenkonzentration ca.8% (1 Leerstelle auf 4 Elementarzellen). Im Tm-reichen Bereich u/erden alle bei der Stbchiometrie vorhandenen Leerstellen mit Tm aufgefullt. Dies fiihrt zur Bildung von oktaedrischen Tm-Clustern mit 7 Tm-Ionen, in denen der Tm-Tm Abstand mit gegenuber TmSe halbiert und ca. 20?o niedriger als in Tm-Metall ist. An der Phasengrenze bei 1.05 betragt die Konzentration dieser Cluster 2.5?o (1 Cluster auf 10 Elementarzellen). Die Stabilitatsbereiche im Nichtstbchiometriebereich wurden mit Hochtemperatur-DTA, Reaktionskalorimetrie, chemischen und rbntgenographischen Methoden untersucht. Das T-x Phasendiagramm ist ein Maximumloslichkeitsdiagramm mit einer kongruent schmelzenden Zusammensetzung von 0.96 mol Tm/mol Se bei 2065 ± 10 C. Im Nichtstbchio metriebereich treten bei ca und 1100 C Phasenumvi/andlungen auf, deren Art u/egen der hohen Umu/andlungstemperaturen nicht bestimmt werden konnte, Unterhalb von 860 C tritt eine Mischungslucke zwischen 0.94 und 0.98 mol Tm/mol Se auf. Diese Mischungslucke bedeutet eine Abstossung der Randzusammensetzungen, die sich nur durch den Wert der gemisch-

6 -9- ten Valenz unterscheiden. Damit stossen sich dreiwertiges TmSe und gemischtvalentes TmSe ab, ein kontinuierlicher Ubergang von dreiwertigem zu gemischtvalentem TmSe durch Kontrolle der Nichtstbchiometrie ist nicht moglich. Bei Zimmertemperatur wurden die Stabilitatsbereiche mit Hilfe der Reaktionskalorimetrie untersucht. Die relativen Stabilitaten (Lbsungskalorimetrie in 4N HC1) zeigen drei Stabilitatsbereiche deren stabilste Zusammensetzungen bei 0.90, 0.99 und 1.04 mol Tm/mol Se liegen. Die Mischungslucke zwischen 0.94 und 0.98 mol Tm/mol Se ist klar zu erkennen. Die stbchiometrische Phase Tmn ggse ist gegen- Liber einem Gleichgewicht von Tmn gnse und Tm, n^se metastabil. Die Stabilitatsdifferenz zwischen Tm,'n Se 3+ und hypothetischem Tm, nse J.. u betragt 42 kcal/mol (1.8 ev pro Tm). Dies entspricht einer Destabilisierung des gemischtvalenten Zustandes gegeniiber dem dreiwertigen Zustand von 29?o. Die erstmalige Bestimmung des Wertes der Bildungsenthalpie von Tmn ggse wurde mit Hilfe der Fluorverbrennungskalorimetrie durchgef iihrt, sie betragt 433 ± 30 kj/mol bzu/. 103 ± 7 kcal/mol.
