4 The RED gives a definition of biomass the biodegradable fraction of products, waste and residues from biological origin from agriculture (including vegetal and animal substances), forestry and related industries including fisheries and aquaculture, as well as the biodegradable fraction of industrial and municipal waste' How can waste and residues from biological origin be defined with respect to residues from landscape conservation and maintenance work (LCMW)? 5 Biomass potential in the EU According to a projection in the Commission's Impact Assessment of the Renewable Energy higher scenario results in a biomass potential of 230 million toe, the lower being 195 million toe. Renewables provided 16.7 % of the EU28 final energy consumption in Based on current knowledge it is thus reasonable to assume that biomass could account for two-thirds of the renewable energy target in For heat and transport energy, biomass is the dominating renewable energy carrier. To reach the 2030 renewable energy target of 27% of the final consumption, biomass will continue to play a key role

6 EU regions: 1 billion tonne supply (2030 vision) The base potential is considered as the sustainable technical potential, considering agreed sustainability standards in CAP, forestry management plans(equivalent to current potentials described in EFSOS II) & RED sustainability criteria. S2Biom has estimated that a total of 32.4 million ha can be available in Europe by million ha of land with marginal conditions and 7.2 million ha of land released from traditional cropping due to low economic competitiveness of existing production systems

23 Conclusions Bioenergy remains of great importance and pulling force of renewable resources especially with respect to the heating sector FNR, Dörthe Hagenguth With respect to RES goals, all available sustainable biomass potentials/sources need to be mobilized Therein, biomass from LCMW may deliver a limited but considerable contribution Potential win-win situation: energetic use economically more relevant than composting or chargeable disposal increased motivation of keeping landscapes open Infrastructure: implementation of traffic safety obligations good source of energy for decentralized supply concepts in rural areas Landpixel
