Under no circumstances should the teacher see any of the candidates booklets before or while reading the listening passages. NOTE: Forty-five minutes is suggested for the listening assessment. Teachers should NOT be stopped if they exceed the 45 minutes. The timing of the various passages is to be done by the teacher. At the end of the listening assessment, candidates will continue with the other assessment activities for German Level 2. INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE TEACHER You should allow up to 45 minutes for the assessment of German Begin reading at the point marked * at the top of page 3. Read out to the candidates all the material printed in italics according to the instructions given. Read at a normal classroom learning speed. It is recommended that, as you complete each reading, you tick the box alongside the pause instructions. Note that pause times vary according to the length of the reading. Details of the number of readings are printed in the candidates booklets as part of their instructions.
3 3 * Open your booklet, German 90401, at page 2, Question One. You have one minute to read Question One. QUESTION ONE: kick-off 2006 You will listen to a radio news item about the recent Soccer World Cup. You will hear the news item read three times. The first time, you will hear it as a whole. Just listen to get the general idea. Then you will hear it twice more, in sections, for you to focus on the relevant details. There will be a pause after each section. Answer the questions, in English, in the spaces provided on pages 2 and 3. Your answers must be based on the information you hear. You will be rewarded for providing: all the information requested and detailed answers. Take note of the glossed vocabulary. The words will be repeated in the relevant sections. Get ready to listen.

Pause 5 seconds First reading Glossed word: trotz means despite, in spite of Johan: Über Silvester habe ich mich in ein sechzehnjähriges Mädchen verliebt.
