1 The following tasks will enable you to evaluate your progress in German in Year 9 and set goals for Year 10. You will revise the modules covered this year as well as practice key skills for the new German GCSE such as Roleplay, Translation, Grammar and Reading. TASK ONE - PLCS Read each of the PLCs (Personalised Learning Checklist) for the five modules you have covered in Year 9. Before doing the summer transition tasks, colour the circle in BeforeTransition Tasks in green if you feel are confident with that module, red if you are struggling and yellow if you somewhere in the middle. After completion of the transition tasks, colour the circle in the After Transition Tasks column in green, red or yellow to see where you have made progress and where you still need to develop on. Make a note in the box beneath the PLC on what you feel you are good at within each module and what areas you could improve upon. TASK TWO 10 GermanTASKS (2 PER EACH MODULE) There are a total of 10 Transition Tasks for you to complete based on the five year 9 modules. There is a variety of tasks which cover different skills examined in the new GCSE. You should complete all of these tasks to the best of your ability. Bring your completed PLCs and Transition Tasks to your first German lesson in September so that your teacher can mark it for you.

Translate the text into English. Translating Identify known language and highlight all the familiar words.

6 In factual reports or articles there are often lots of cognates and near-cognates. Make a list of all those you can find. Use context and your common sense to help you work out meanings, too. Identify any individual words that you need to look up in a dictionary. Make sure that the meaning you find fits logically with the rest of the sentence. Read your translation out loud, to make sure it sounds natural. If it doesn t, change a word or the order of the words, but don t change the overall meaning. TASK THREE: Family and Friends Guten Tag, ich heisse Bruno, ich bin elf Jahre alt und ich wohne in Hamburg, das liegt in Deutschland. Ich werde meine Familie beschreiben. Meine Familie ist sehr groß. Ich habe drei Schwestern und zwei Brüder. Meine Schwestern heissen Kathrin, Elena und Rosie und meinen Brüder heissen Jens und Michael. Kathrin ist zwanzig Jahre alt. You need the correct part of werden and the infinitive at the end of the sentence. 12 German past tense practice Verb English Spielen Hören Machen Tanzen sagen Sehen* Essen* The past tense in German follows the pattern. The person the helping verb past participle There are only 2 verbs that are used as a helping verb in the past tense. They are haben and sein. Find the correct form of the verb for each person and put them in the table below: Person Ich Du Er Sie Es Wir Sie Haben habe Most verbs use haben so we ll stick to that today. Using the verbs at the top, these follow a simple pattern Take off the en so spielen becomes spiel. Then add a ge at the start gespiel. And t at the end so spielen becomes gespielt. This is number 3 in your sentence! Try changing the verbs into the past and put them into the past participle column. Verb Past participle Spielen Hören Machen Tanzen sagen Sehen* Essen* Then choose the person you want to talk about and put this first in your sentence. Then you just need a helping verb (check the table for the correct form of the verb depending on the person). Spielen -> spiel-> gespiel -> gespielt -> ich habe gespielt I played! Im Jahr Vor drei Jahren If you use time phrases at the start of your sentence you need to swap the ich and habe around. EG: Ich habe Fussball gespielt -> Gestern habe ich Fussball gespielt. Using your sentences above, add time phrases to them and remember to invert ich and habe. Past tense with SEIN. The verbs above do not follow this rule and you will need to LEARN them. Using a dictionary or verb table try to find the past participles and fill in the table on the next page.
