4 Probabilistic Turing machines Definition: A probabilistic TM M is a DTM with an additional random input tape. It contains a random word r ε{0,1} m which is read from left to right during the computation, one bit per step. On input x, with random word r, M computes M(x,r) ε {0,1}. Remark: We are only interested in probabilistic TMs with polynomial runtime. As polynomials are time-constructable, we may assume w.l.o.g. that each computation for inputs x, x =n, has the same length p(n), and each random word r has length p(n), for a polynomial p. For x, x =n, A(x) denotes the set of all random words r ε{0,1} p(n) such that M(x,r)=1. We say, M accepts x with probability Pr r [M(x,r) =1] := A(x) /2 p(n) 4

5 Probabilistic and nondeterministic TMs Remark: A probabilistic TM can also be seen as an NTM M. The probability that M accepts x is [number of accepting computations]/[number of all computations] 5

8 Anwendungen 1. Test auf Identität von zwei implizit gegebenen Polynomen p und q. Ist p q?? Wende obigen Algorithmus auf Eingabe p-q an. 2. Existenz eines perfekten Matchings in einem Graphen G=({1,,n}, E). Satz (Tutte 1947): G enthält ein perfektes Matching det(a) 0. - Determinanten sind Polynome vom Grad n. 11 Proof of Claim 2. (without Chernoff bounds) Given a randomized algorithm A for L with polynomial runtime s(n) and error probability at most 1/3. Consider the following randomized algorithm A*: On input x, x =n, run A 13 times, with independent random inputs. Output the majority vote.
