A n d en E cken d e r in den S chlo ssp la tz m ü n d e n d e n S traßen, w o sich die M e n s c h e n aus den A rm e n v ie rte ln d er S ta d t v e rs a m m e lt h a tte n, w a r die S tim m u n g d a g e g e n b e re its zu d ie s e m Z e itp u n k t ganz a nders. D a s h ilft uns a rm e n L eu te n d och alles n ic h ts!" hörte m an aus ihren Reihen rufen. G leichzeitig sah die u n m itte lb a r vor dem Schlossportal dich t zusam - m e n g e d rä n g te M e n g e d e u tlic h e r die s ta rk e M ilitä rb e sa tz u n g innerhalb des S chlo sse s. A m Tage zuvor w a re n zusätzlich zu den Z e h n ta u se n d e n in B erlin s ta tio n ie rte n S o ld a te n noch e in m a l F ü n fta u s e n d M a nn G a rd e tru p p e n aus P otsd am h e ra n g e h o lt und im H o f des rie sigen B erliner S ta d tsc h lo s se s k o n z e n trie rt w o rd e n. Ihr A n b lic k ließ die E rin neru ng an die b lu tig e n Ü b e rg riffe d e r V ortage m it b e re its m e h re re n Toten w a ch w e rd e n. Zusä tzlich g ing das G e rü c h t um, dass die s to c kre a k tio n ä re M ilitä rp a rte i um den P rinzen von P reuß en (also den späte re n König und Kaiser W ilh e lm I.) ein,e xem p el s ta tu ie re n ' und den a u fm ü p fig e n Berlinern zeigen w olle, w e r Herr im preußischen Hause sei. Von zahlreichen Seiten e rtö n te deshalb im m e r lauter der Ruf: M ilitä r w e g!" D ie W u t w u c h s, als sich von e in e r S eite, von d er S te c h b a h n her, ein S c h w a d ro n D ra g o n e r in B e w e g u n g s e tz te und m it b la n ke m Säbel a u f d ie Im m e r noch d ic h t g e d rä n g te n M a s s e n e in zuschla g e n begann. Von d e r a n d e re n S e ite m a rs c h ie rte e in e A b te ilu n g In fa n te rie aus d e m z w e ite n S c h lo ssp o rta l heraus und s te llte sich k a m p fb e re it auf. (D er m o d e rn e P olizeijargon k e n n t s e it 1967 fü r d ie s e s V o rg e h e n die B eze ich n u n g L e b e rw u rs tta k tik ".) Dann fie le n p lö tzlich d ie b e rü h m te n zw ei S chüsse - gleichsam die S tartschüsse fü r die b lutigen, bürgerk rie g s ä h n lic h e n B a rrik a d e n k ä m p fe, die n un b egannen. D ass d ie z w e i S chüsse durch U ngeschick und nich t w ille n tlic h von S oldaten ausge - lö s t w u rd e n, w ie e in e s p ä te r e in g e s e tz te U n te rs u c h u n g s k o m m is s io n h e ra u sfa n d, v e rm u te te zu d ie s e m Z e itp u n k t n ie m a n d. A lle s g la u b te an eine V erschw örung. M it - w ie Z e itg e n o s s e n fo rm u lie rte n - z o rn g lü h e n d e n M ie n e n gen H im m e l R ache s c h re ie n d " und d e m R uf V e rra t! M a n m o rd e t das Volk! Zu den W a ffe n!" flü c h te te die M e n s c h e n m e n g e in d ie a n g re n z e n d e n S traßen hinein. W ährend die B erliner sich in den e n tfe rn te r gelegenen

G e n era l von P rittw itz, d e m O b e rk o m - m a n d ie re n d e n d e r g e g e n d ie B e rlin e r M ä rzrevolutionäre e in g esetzten Soldate n s c h w a n te, dass bei e in e r fo rtg e s e tz - Barrikadenszene am Alexanderplatz am 18. März 1848, te n m ilitä ris c h e n A u s e in a n d e rs e tz u n g Holzstich nach einer Zeichnung von Johann Jakob e in e N ie d e rla g e d e r A rm e e d ro h te. E s Klrchhoff, April 1848 is t n ic h t zu le u g n e n, d ie E rb itte ru n g w a r e in e a llg e m e in e und in d en u n te - ren K lassen w o h l bis zur W u t g e s te ig e rte, so daß d ie Truppen bei ih re m w e ite re n V o rd rin g e n u n fe h lb a r im m e r g rö ß e re S c h w ie rig k e ite n g e fu n d e n h aben w ü r d e n." S p ä te s te n s dann a ber w ä re P re uß en a u s e in a n d e rg e b ro c h e n. B e re its in d e r W o c h e z u v o r h a tte n b re ite R e fo rm b e w e g u n g e n in den O s t- und W e s tp ro v in z e n P re u ß e n s m it S e p a ratio n g e d ro h t, w e n n d ie H o h e n zo lle rn k ro n e n ic h t a llg e m e in e F re ih e ite n g e w ä h re n w ü rd e.

Es hat w o m ö g lic h d ie H o h e n z o lle rn k ro n e g e re tte t u n d d e n a lte n E liten fü r w e ite re J a h rz e h n te die M a c h t e rh a lte n. W e r w e iß, w a s P re uß en und D e u ts c h la n d e rs p a rt g e b lie b e n w ä re, w e n n d ie D e m o k ra tie s ch o n M itte d e s 19. J a h rh u n d e rts a u f D auer g e s ie g t h ä tte und die p re u ß is c h e M o n a rc h ie s ch o n und n ic h t e rs t sie b zig J a h re später gefallen w äre. W ie d e m auch sei: Bei B e te ilig te n w ie A u ß e n s te h e n d e n h in te rlie ß e n die K ä m p fe e in e n n a c h h a ltig e n E ind ru ck.
