Delchev (Department of physical and theoretical Chemistry, University of Plovdiv, Bulgaria) It is known that carbonyl compounds with hydrogen atoms bound directly to α-carbon atoms (neighbouring of a Ñ=Î group), which are with considerable mobility, exist as two forms - keto-form and enol form. The transition between both the forms is popular as a keto-enol tautomerism. Especially movable are the hydrogen atoms, which are next to a carbon atom bound with two carbonyl groups R 1 -CO- -CO-R (β-diketone). The mobility is determined by the influence of two carbonyl groups and the possibility to form other stable (enol), which resembles a six-atom ring (R 1 -CO-=C(OH)-R ), thus stabilizing that form. We have applied the program Gaussian 98 to investigate the compounds malonaldehyde and acetylacetone which are important for organic synthesis. By this theoretical examination of the mechanism of keto-enol tautomerism it was established that the enol form forms strong intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The keto-enol equilibrium could be written with a general equation: O..... H O O O R 1 C C R R 1 C C R C C H H H where R 1 =H, R =H in malonaldehyde and R 1 =, R = in acetylacetone. The main goal of the work was to demonstrate a theoretical way for reaction mechanisms to be investigated with ab initio methods included in Gaussian 98 program. The goal leads to the following main tasks: 1. To optimize the structures of the most stable enol forms with an intramolecular hydrogen bond and the keto-forms of malonaldehyde and acetylacetone with three combinations methods and basis sets available in Gaussian 98 - HF/6-11G**; BLYP/6-11G** and

2 BLYP/D95**; subsequently comparing the energies of both the forms to establish the more stable one.. With the help of ÎÐÒ option we calculated the electron structures of eight possible plane rotamers of the enol form of malonaldehyde and acetylacetone.. From two molecular specifications with QST in a Gaussian Input File we found transition states of different rotation reactions. The two molecular specifications were entered in GJF as input - the optimized structures of both the rotamers taking part in the rotational reaction. When the procedure was failing we replaced QST with QST. Then we included in the molecular specification section of GJF a third molecule; that was the presumed structure of the transition state. 4. With FREQ- and OPT- options the transition states of the rotations were optimized in their ground states. The procedure was repeated with all combinations of methods and basis sets mentioned above. 5. Knowing the absolute values for the energies of the transition state and the rotamers taking part in the rotations we calculated the energy barriers of the forward and reverse reaction as a difference between the energy levels of the transition state and the corresponding rotamer. 6. We have found the transition state of the keto-enol reaction as a first order saddle point. The calculations were performed with all combinations from methods and basis sets. 7. The IR spectra of transition states were calculated also with FREQ keyword. They gave one imaginary eigenvalue as an IR frequency proving these states as real transition states of the keto-enol reactions for malonaldehyde and acetylacetone. The normalvibrations were visulalized with program GaussView installed on FPT server at TU Wien. 8. From electron energies and zero-point vibrational energies of the transition state and both the forms we calculated the energy barriers of the forward and reverse reaction of the ketoenol conversion. 3 Other compound taking part in our theoretical consideration is barbituric acid. Barbituric acid contains a great number of mobile hydrogen atoms which are responsible for several stable ketoenol forms. The presence of one or two functional groups in these molecules determine different properties. We have studied the following transformation: Quantumchemical calculations with Gaussian 98 show that the most stable isomer of barbituric acid is A, where three carbonyl groups are available. As energetically most unstable was found compound F. Since the calculated partial negative charge of C(4) is highest (highest electron density) at compound D the attack of C(4) of electrophilic particles will occur easier than in the compounds (isomers). With lowest electron density at C(4) is isomer A, which is the interesting one through electrophilic reagents. The reason for such distribution of the electrons in the molecule is the lack of a conjugation in the hetero-ring and shifting of the electron density towards the oxygen atoms. The transformation À G has the highest energy barrier while a lowest one has the conversion  À. Almost symmetric is the barrier of the conversion Ñ D because of the close value for the energy of both the compounds taking part into it. Therefore, the heat effect for that reaction is the lowest one. Strongly asymmetric is the barrier À Â.

4 Simulation von Molekülschwingungsspektren Ferenc Billes, Institut für physikalische Chemie, TU Budapest Hans Mikosch, Institut für technische Elektrochemie und Festkörperchemie, TU Wien Projekte Für alle Projekte wurde das Programm Gaussian 98 angewendet. Der größte Teil der Projekte betrifft aromatische oder heteroaromatische Moleküle. Diese sind meist Teile systematischer Untersuchungen auf diesem Gebiet; sie umfassen fünfgliedrige heterocyclische Verbindungen (Pyrrol, Pyrazol, Imidazol, Triazol, Tetrazol, weiters Pyrrol, Pyrrolidin, Furan, Di- und Tetrahydrofuran), sechsgliedrige aromatische Verbindungen (Phenol, Hydrochinon, Resorcin, Pyrokatechin), und Pyrazin-Derivate. Die Arbeiten über Supramoleküle, Hydroxi-Harnstoff und anorganische Gläser werden im folgenden etwas detaillierter beschrieben. 1. Supramoleküle Calixaren, genauer 5,6,7,8-Tetrahydroxi-Calix[4]aren, ist ein wichtiger Klatrathbildner und wird dabei auch in der Simulierung von Ionenkanälen von Zellmembranen benutzt. Das Molekül hat folgende Form und Struktur: OH OH OH HO Weil das Molekül groß ist, wurde die Berechnung der optimierten Geometrie und der Schwingungsfrequenzen mit HF/4-1G* durchgeführt. Am Anfang wurde eine C 4v Symmetrie angenommen, dabei entstanden aber 5 imaginäre Frequenzen, mit der C v Symmetrie berechnet gab es nur eine imaginäre Frequenz; das Energieminimum war damit nicht erreicht. Mit der C s Symmetrie wurde schließlich die r e Struktur gefunden. Im Zuge der weiteren Bearbeitung der quantenchemisch berechneten Daten gab es große Schwierigkeiten auf Grund des 16-atomigen Ring. Die Auswahl der unabhängigen inneren Koordinaten für diesen Ring erforderte eine Verallgemeinerung der Ring-Redundanz- Bedingungen. Eine Überraschung gaben einige Ringdeformationskraftkonstanten, die ungewöhnlich große Werte, bis nahe 900 mdyna (!) hatten (solche Konstante haben

5 normalerweise höchstens die Größe von -, aber meist unter 1 mdyna). Trotzdem ergaben diese Kraftkonstanten ganz normale Wellenzahlen. Die großen Kraftkonstantenwerte zeigen, daß die entsprechende Deformationen des 16-er Ringes sehr große Kräfte benötigen, also dieser Ring sehr steif ist. Protoporphyrin IX. entsteht als Zwischenprodukt des Aufbaus und Abbaus des Hems. Das Molekül hat eine des Calix[4]arens ähnliche Struktur. NH N N HN COOH COOH Die Molekül enthält noch mehr Atome als das Calixaren. Darum wurde nur die semiempirische Methode AM1 verwendet. Diese Rechnung verbrauchte nur wenig Rechenzeit. Bilirubin ist Abbauprodukt des Protoporphyrin IX. Weil das auch ein ziemlich großes Molekül ist, wurden auch in diesem Falle die Rechnungen mit AM1 durchgeführt. HOOC NH HN O O NH HN COOH Die oben dargestellte Struktur ist die erhaltene, optimierte Struktur: der große Ring des Protoporphyrins wendet sich nach der Spaltung um. Im allgemeinen kann gesagt werden, daß die Zuordnung der einzigen, auch meist überlappenden Banden der Supramoleküle praktisch unmöglich ist ohne quantenchemische

6 Rechnungen. 5. Hydroxiharnstoff Diese Verbindung, H N-CO-NHOH, hat anticarcinogene Wirkung und es wird auch eine anti-aids Wirkung angenommen. Das Molekül ist einfach, besteht nur aus neun Atomen (davon vier Wasserstoffatome). Für mögliche Strukturen in Wasser wurden neben der Grundverbindung die tautomere Zwitterion Struktur, ein Dimer, Kationen und Anionen angenommen. Alle wurden mit DFT BeckeP86/6-11G** (das Anion mit G**, das Dimer mit 6-1+G* Basissatz) berechnet. Die Auswertung der Ergebnisse auch mit Hilfe der experimentellen Schwingungsspektren folgt. Die Tabelle zeigt einige Strukturparameter und die berechnete molekulare Energien (E). Das Anion hat längere C=O und kürzere N-O Bindungen, bei den Kationen kann man nur die Verkürzung der N-O Gruppe bemerken, die C=O Bindungslänge verschiebt sich praktisch nicht oder nur wenig. Die tiefsten Energien haben die Kationen; diese haben aber ein Wasserstoffatom mehr. Aber auch das Tautomer hat tiefere Energie als die Grundverbindung. Das zeigt, daß die Zwitterion Form stabiler ist. Zwar steht die optimierte Geometrie des Dimers schon zur Verfügung, doch die Struktur ist sehr unwahrscheinlich (das Sauerstoffatom der OH Gruppe des einen Moleküls wanderte an das andere Molekül und bildet eine HO-N(H)=O Gruppe). Die Schwingungsfrequenzen sind noch nicht berechnet, sie sollten die Realität dieser Struktur beweisen. 6. Modelle anorganischer Gläser Diese Untersuchungen bilden die Fortsetzung der Arbeiten für die Simulation der Struktur und Schwingungsspektren der As-S, As-Se, As-S-Se Systeme. Die berechneten Systeme sind Ge-S, Ge-Se und Ge-S-Se. Diese Materialien sind in der infraroten Faseroptik wichtig. Das Ziel ist, durchlässige Wellenlängenbereiche (Fenster) zu finden. Alle Rechnungen wurden mit der HF/LANLDZ Methode/Basissatz durchgeführt. Die folgende Abbildung zeigt sie ähnlich früherer Ergebnisse an As-S-Se Systeme: die simulierten IR Spektren sind als Funktion der Zusammensetzung dargestellt.

E As S Se As S Se As S Se As SSe As Se Wellenzahl / cm -1 Die mit HF/LANLDZ vorausberechneten Wellenzahlen für solche Systeme stimmen mit den Wellenzahlen der infraroten Spektren (ohne Skalierung) gut überein. Die systematischen Änderungen an den Spektren mit der Konzentration ist gut zu beobachten. Solche Rechnungen wurden mit den Ge-S-Se Systemen durchgeführt. Neben diesen werden auch die Schwingungsfrequenzen der Ge x S y (x 5) Moleküle als Funktion der Länge der Ge-S Ketten berechnet.

8 DFT-Studies of Double Four-Member Rings: Oxygen-Bridged Silicon and Aluminum Atoms in Zeolite LTA Structural Fragments Ellie L. Uzunova, Georgi St. Nikolov (Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia) Hans Mikosch (Institut für technische Elektrochemie und Festkörperchemie, TU-WIEN) The electronic structure and relative stability of [H 8 Si 8-x Al x O 1 ] x- structural fragments with Si and Al atoms located at tetrahedral sites and connected by bridging oxygen atoms so as to form a tetragonal prism, together with oxygen-coordinated charge-compensating cations, are studied by the BLYP/6-1G(d) method. Clusters with Al/Si ratios in the 0 1 range and different orderings of the extraframework cations and Si and Al at tetrahedral sites are proper models for the double four-member rings, which are secondary building units of the Linde type A (LTA) zeolites. The stability of the structure fragments is higher when the framework s negative charges are at maximum distance. The HOMO orbitals of H 8 Si 8 O 1, the anionic clusters [H 8 Si 8-x Al x O 1 ] x-, and the proton-balanced ones are mainly O p nonbonding AOs. In fragments with Al/Si > 0 and Na + at extraframework cation positions, the oxygen nonbonding nature of the HOMO orbital decreases and certain electron density is shifted to the Al centers. The LUMO orbitals of Na x H 8 Si 8-x Al x O 1 clusters consist of the chargebalancing cations AO. The vibrational modes of fragments of the general composition [M x ] x+ [H 8 Si 8-x Al x O 1 ] x, with 0 x 4, and M + a monovalent charge-compensating cation, are assigned to the framework vibrations of LTA zeolites. The normal vibrations that arise from configurations with different Si,Al arrangements are calculated by the BLYP method. Displacement vectors are used to define the ring-opening vibrations as synchronized movement of the tetrahedral and oxygen atoms. The vectors are oriented radially to the ring center and parallel to the ring plane. The fragment model Na 4 H 8 Si 4 Al 4 O 1 with D d symmetry is selected for the LTA structure. The ring-opening vibrations of the cluster models are correlated to the LTA framework modes via the higher symmetry group D 4h, which describes the entirely siliceous tetragonal prism, H 8 Si 8 O 1. Synchronized oxygen atom displacements are part of all ring-opening modes. A full presentation of the subjects outlined above is given in Ellie L. Uzunova and G. St. Nikolov, J. Phys. Chem.
