4 FMC Overview: Definition of Fixed Mobile Convergence FMC is concerned with the provision of network and service capabilities which are independent of the access technique. This does not necessarily imply the physical convergence of networks. It is concerned with the development of converged network capabilities and supporting standards. This set of standards may be used to offer a set of consistent services via fixed or mobile access to fixed or mobile, public or private networks. An important feature of fixed mobile convergence is the separation of the subscriptions and services from individual access points and terminals and to allow users to access a consistent set of services from any fixed or mobile terminal via any compatible access point [ ]. In a given network configuration, the capabilities that provide service and application to the end-user irrespective of the fixed or mobile access technologies and independent of user s location. In the NGN environment, it means to provide NGN services to endusers regardless of the access technology. 4

6 FMC Overview: Standardization Activities & Fora Non-exhaustive overview: UMA permits continuity of mobile voice and data services across WLAN and cellular networks. FMCA is a global alliance of telco operators with focus on the productisation of convergence technologies. 3GPP has standardized the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) being access technology agnostic. Fixed Mobile Convergence ITU-T is working on FMC recommendations within Study Group 19 & Focus Group on Next Generation Networks (FGNGN). Common IMS to come ETSI TISPAN is also working on IMS standardization. Re-shift to 3GPP is planned for IEEE is developing standards that will enable HO & interoperability between heterogen. network types incl. 802 & non-802 networks. 6

9 FMC Motivation: Mobility as one key driver of FMC. User (Personal) Mobility The ability of a user to maintain the same user identity irrespective of the terminal used and its network point of attachment. Terminals used may be of different types. Last Mile Session Mobility Terminal (Host) Mobility User Mobility The Session capability to move an active session between terminals. Service Mobility Terminal Mobility The ability of a terminal Fixed to change its location, i.e., network point of attachment, and still be Access able to communicate. User Terminal Point of Access Network Service Mobility The ability of a user to use a particular (subscribed) service irrespective of the location of the user and the terminal that is used for that purpose. Today's situation Fixed as well as Mobile Operators develop independently their own strategies Fixed Access Operators acting as Virtual Mobile Operator (Wireless hot-spot Networks) Mobile Operators consider the possibility to build up their own Feeder Network Benefits of an integrated FMC approach Cost reduction (CAPEX and OPEX) Common network infrastructure (aggregation & core networks) and control functions (e.g. QoS, Mobility, AAA, ) Future proof network evolution Simple, flat, scalable, efficient network architecture Meet the ever-increasing demand for bandwidth in mobile communications Attractive new services and increasing usability for customers Bundle services and subscriptions to simplify the service delivery Always-Best-Connected (ABC) An integrated Fixed/Mobile Operator needs a strategy considering aspects of Fixed and Mobile Networks! 11

19 Summary/Conclusions FMC Anspruch und Wirklichkeit The integrated FMC approach enables new attractive services bundles, incr. revenues retaining & winning customers cost reductions but Current FMC solutions do not satisfy the user centric service converg FMC is likely to start its victory top down (starting at appl. layer) 19
