2 Systemisches Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement Komplexität, Resilienz und Systemdenken Die letzten 20 Jahre haben gezeigt, dass es keine raschen und einfachen Lösungen für die globalen Herausforderungen gibt: Effizienzgewinne wurden durch Rebound-Effekte wettgemacht, Freiwilligkeit endet häufig dort wo der globale Wettbewerbsdruck zu groß ist und Verantwortung läuft Gefahr als Organisationsfassade diskreditiert zu werden. Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement muss sich daher auch mit Widerständen, Trade-Offs, Widersprüchen, Ambiguitäten sowie den Rahmenbedingungen nachhaltigen Wirtschaftens auseinandersetzen. Systemische Ansätze bieten dazu einen innovativen und verlässlichen Bezugsrahmen. Sie stehen im Mittelpunkt der Herbsttagung 2013 der VHB Kommission Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement, die am neuen Campus der Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien stattfindet. Ziele der Herbsttagung 2013 sind einen Überblick über den Stand der Forschung im systemischen Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement zu bieten innovative Forschungsarbeiten zu diskutieren, die beide Forschungsfelder - Systemdenken (Systems Thinking) und Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement - verbinden neben theoretischen und wissenschaftlichen Inhalten auch Erfahrungen aus der Unternehmens- und Beratungspraxis zu berücksichtigen englisch- und deutschsprachige Forscher/innen gleichermaßen anzusprechen und über die Tagung hinaus zu vernetzen angewandte Fähigkeiten im Rahmen von zwei Praxis-Workshops im Anschluss an die Tagung weiter zu entwickeln Eröffnungs- und Plenar-Vorträge u.a. von Christoph Badelt, Rektor der WU Wien: "Der neue Campus und das Kompetenzzentrum Nachhaltigkeit der WU Wien" Georg Müller-Christ, Professor an der Universität Bremen: "Der Umgang mit Komplexität und Widersprüchen im Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement" Gandolfo Dominici, Ass. Professor an der Università degli Studi di Palermo und Gründer des Business System Laboratory: "Sustainability according to the Viable Systems Perspective" Joana Krizanits, Selbstständige Unternehmensberaterin und Trainerin für systemische Unternehmensentwicklung: "Systemische Organisationsentwicklung und Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement" Der Wissenstransfer wird zusätzlich zu den Vorträgen durch interaktive Formate (Scientific Speed Dating, Praxis-Round-Table, Marktplatz des Wissens) unterstützt. 3 Einreichung von Vortragsskizzen Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement und Systemdenken sind weit ausdifferenzierte Themengebiete, die von unterschiedlichen wissenschaftlichen Communities und unter Verwendung einer Vielzahl von Fachbegriffen diskutiert werden. Zur Herbsttagung 2013 werden Vortragsskizzen eingeladen, die beide Themenfelder in innovativer Form verbinden. Dazu sind konzeptionelle Arbeiten, Fallstudien, Surveys und Evaluationen geeignet. Nachfolgende Abbildung zeigt exemplarisch wie (zumindest) zwei Themen aus Systemdenken und Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement verbunden werden können. Herausragende englischsprachige Arbeiten können beim internationalen Symposium "Systems Thinking for a Sustainable Economy - Advancements in Economic and Managerial Theory and Practice" ( Januar 2014 in Rom) des Business Systems Laboratory eingereicht und in einem von fünf Special Issues internationaler wissenschaftlicher Journale veröffentlicht werden (Details siehe Im Rahmen eines allgemeinen Tracks werden auf der Herbsttagung auch aktuelle Themen des Nachhaltigkeitsmanagements diskutiert, die keinen unmittelbaren Bezug zum Schwerpunktthema der Konferenz aufweisen müssen. Vortragsskizzen für diesen Teil der Tagung unterliegen demselben Auswahlverfahren und denselben Anforderungen bezüglich Layout und Umfang. VHB NaMa

4 Anforderungen an Vortragsskizzen Jede Einreichung sollte 1. einen klaren Bezug zum einem Teilgebiet des Nachhaltigkeitsmanagements aufweisen und diesen kurz und prägnant darlegen 2. einen klaren Bezug zu einem Teilgebiet des Systemdenkens aufweisen und diesen kurz und prägnant darlegen (ausgenommen sind Einreichungen für den allgemeinen Track der Herbsttagung) 3. die Themen- und Fragestellung der Arbeit darstellen, die angewandte Methodik beschreiben, die Ergebnisse der Arbeit präsentieren und diese kritisch diskutieren 4. Schlussfolgerungen für künftige Forschungsarbeiten aufzeigen und (falls angebracht) Konsequenzen für das systemische Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement darstellen Umfang der Vortragsskizzen: mindestens zwei, maximal vier A4-Seiten Bitte verwenden Sie für ihre Einreichung ausschließlich die unter verfügbare Word-Vorlage. Sie erleichtern uns damit die Layout-Arbeiten am Konferenzband. Bitte speichern Sie Ihre Vortragsskizze so ab, dass Ihr/e Name/n im Datei-Namen enthalten ist/sind (z.b. NAMA2013_Max_Muster). Bitte senden Sie Ihre Vortragsskizze bis spätestens 12. Juli 2013 an Wir freuen uns auf zahlreiche Einreichungen und eine spannende Tagung mit intensivem fachlichem Austausch. Zur Deckung der Selbstkosten der Herbsttagung 2013 müssen wir einen Unkostenbeitrag von 100 Euro pro Person verrechnen. Dadurch ist die Teilnahme einer Person an der gesamten Tagung (7. und 8. Oktober 2013), der Konferenzband sowie das gemeinsame Abendessen am 7. Oktober 2013 abgedeckt. Die Teilnahme an einem der Praxis-Workshops (siehe folgende Seite) ist für Teilnehmer/innen der Herbsttagung 2013 kostenlos. Für externe Personen die nicht an der Herbsttagung 2013 teilnehmen, verrechnen wir für die Teilnahme an den Workshops einen Unkostenbeitrag von 50 Euro. VHB NaMa

6 Praxis-Workshops am 9. Oktober 2013 Unmittelbar im Anschluss an die Herbsttagung 2013 finden zwei ganztägige Praxis- Workshops statt, die zwei top-aktuelle Themen aufgreifen und in Kleingruppen vertiefen. Beide Workshops werden in deutscher Sprache durchgeführt. (1) Systemaufstellungen in der Praxis Nachhaltigkeitsmanagement erfordert den Umgang mit widersprüchlichen Zielen, Ansprüchen und Bedürfnissen. Um mit der daraus resultierenden Komplexität umgehen zu können, werden neue Instrumente benötigt. Sie sollen Entscheidungsträger/inne/n ermöglichen, verschiedene Perspektiven einzunehmen, Spannungsfelder zu erfahren und einen systemischen Blick zu trainieren. Systemaufstellungen bieten dazu ein hohes Potenzial, werden aber auch manchmal kritisch eingeschätzt. Sie basieren auf Ansätzen der Familien- und Psychotherapie und wurden seit den späten 1990er Jahren erfolgreich in der systemischen Beratung und Organisationsentwicklung eingesetzt. Ziel dieses Workshops ist es die Grundlagen der Aufstellungsarbeit zu vermitteln und anhand konkreter Fallbeispiele zu erproben. Dabei werden unterschiedliche Settings und Aufstellungsformate eingesetzt und deren Nutzen in Wissenschaft, Beratung und Managementpraxis diskutiert. Der Workshop wird von Georg Müller-Christ (Universität Bremen), Ursula Kopp (WU Wien) und einer Gruppe systemischer Berater/innen organisiert. (2) Publish or Perish Nachhaltigkeitsforschung ist häufig inter- und transdisziplinär. Die Veröffentlichung von Forschungsergebnissen stellt für viele Nachwuchswissenschafter/innen eine beträchtliche Herausforderung dar, da in den verschiedenen wissenschaftlichen Communities unterschiedliche "Spielregeln" gelten. Während es in manchen essentiell ist die eigene Arbeit im breiten Spektrum der vorhandenen wissenschaftlichen Ansätze sauber zu verorten und diese weiter zu entwickeln, sind in anderen Communities empirische Evidenz und der Nachweis der (technischen oder wirtschaftlichen) Machbarkeit gefragt. Während in manchen Communities quantitative Erklärungen und mathematische Modelle gefragt sind, sind andere an qualitativen Arbeiten und einer verstehenden Herangehensweise interessiert. Ziel dieses Workshops ist es die expliziten und impliziten Spielregeln verschiedener wissenschaftlicher Communities zu vermitteln, die wichtigsten Erfolgsfaktoren und Stolpersteine auf dem Weg zu einer erfolgreichen wissenschaftlichen Publikation zu diskutieren und anhand von ausgewählten Beispielen Anregungen für die eigene wissenschaftliche Publikationstätigkeit zu geben. Der Workshop wird von Timo Busch (Universität Hamburg), André Martinuzzi (WU Wien) und mit einer Gruppe publikationserfahrener Wissenschafter/innen organisiert. VHB NaMa

10 Systemic Sustainability Management Complexity, Resilience and Systems Thinking The past twenty years have shown that there are no simple and quick solutions for global sustainability challenges: efficiency gains have been compensated by rebound-effects; voluntariness often ends where global competitive pressure is too high; responsibility is at risk of being discredited as an organisational facade. Therefore, Sustainability Management has to deal with resistance, trade-offs, contradictions, ambiguities as well as the general framework of sustainable economic management. For this purpose, systemic approaches provide innovative access. They will be in the focus of the 2013 VHB Section Sustainability Management autumn meeting that will take place at the new campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business. Contributions in German and English are welcome. 11 Call for Abstracts Sustainability management and systems thinking include a broad variety of themes, discussed by different scientific communities by using a broad variety of terms. The autumn meeting 2013 calls for abstracts which are able to connect both topics in a new and innovative way. We accept different types of scientific approaches (conceptual papers, case studies, surveys and evaluation studies). The following figure serves to demonstrate, how the two topics systems thinking and sustainability management may be linked together in research and practice. 12 Abstracts - Requirements Abstracts have to fulfill the following requirements: 1. have a clear link to one of the topics of sustainability management in a concise and precise way 2. demonstrate a clear link to one of the topics of systems thinking in a concise and precise way (except submissions for the general track of the autumn meeting) 3. exhibit the topics and questions of the work, describe the methodology applied, present the and discuss critically the results of the work 4. depict conclusions and connect it to future research and if possible illustrate consequences for the systemic sustainability management Length of Abstracts: 2-4 pages (A4 format) Please make sure that you use the Word template available at for preparing the abstract. 15 What characterizes a system? Systems Thinking (1) a unity made up of organised elements elements can only be understood through their relationships to other elements this relational framework, i.e. a system, is attempting to close into itself (to form a unity, a whole) to function independently from its surroundings social systems are created by the constitution of a boundary between the inside (the system) and its surroundings What does Systems Thinking mean? Mechanistic thinking Systems thinking thinking in objects thinking in inter-relationships thinking in events thinking in continuous behaviours thinking in linear progressions and static snapshots thinking in circular relationships, delays, discontinuities reductionist holistic solving problems insight into problems Inter-Relationships: During beginnings of systems thinking the focus was on inter-relationships and methods were developed that explored these in depth (e.g. system dynamics, viable systems model). Inter-Relationships as a key concept of systems thinking focuses on the question how things are connected, by what, to what and with what consequence. Inter-Relationships is the concept most strongly embedded in the popular imagination of systems thinking: talking about societal systems (e.g. the health system, the military system) we imaging often a set of objects that are interconnected in some way. The popularity of system dynamics is reflected in visualisation methods with boxes and arrows which cements the notion of inter-connection as a key concept of systems thinking. A major challenge of inter-relatedness is the scope of a system, as systems are often embedded in other systems and systems often overlap with others. Thus it is necessary to examine the relationships of system in a horizontal and vertical way. Systems thinker therefore try to looks inside, outside, beside and between the readily identified systems boundary. In particular, systems approaches look at dynamic aspects of inter-relationships, non-linear aspects, and the sensitivity of inter-relationships to context. Following a systems thinking perspective on sustainability management, the inter-relationships, interfaces, and embedding of companies in their surrounding systems, but also the interaction of companies with their sub-systems (departments, groups) are of interest. Temporary systems (e.g. interactions between different organizations in consulting processes or stakeholder dialogues) are taken into account, physical as well as communicative or symbolic interactions. 16 Systems Thinking (2) Perspectives: A systemic approach requires more than assessing inter-relationships, i.e. it is necessary to take a look at the bigger picture. This has to take into account that people observing interrelationships will perceive and interpret them in different ways. In addition particular interrelationships depend on the different purposes one could ascribe to a situation. In order to deal with these issues methods were developed that helped exploring the implications of different perspectives of the same situation (e.g. soft systems methodology). This key element "Perspectives" acknowledges that there is not a single reality but a broad variety of equally valid perspectives people can have on the same system and that this will affect how they understand the system. It is important to mention that this is not the same as stakeholder perspectives as different stakeholders may share the same perspective and one stakeholder may hold different perspectives. Adding the key concept of Perspectives to systems thinking opened up the discourse hugely, as similarities and differences between what is and what might be create puzzles and contractions that stimulate much deeper learning. Following a systems thinking perspective on sustainability management, the key concept of Perspectives allows to take different views on the same system, to avoid easy-fixes and one-bestways, to generate better insights into the behaviour systems in real life and to better understand the reasons of disfunctionalities and ambiguities. Boundaries: Many people share the misunderstanding that systemic approaches are holistic in the sense that they include everything. As every endeavour makes a choice between what it includes and what it excludes, what is deemed relevant and what is deemed not relevant, the discourse in systems thinking took the question into account who takes these decisions. Thus the studying boundaries and critiquing boundary decisions (and who made them) became the third key element of a systems approach. Recent systems thinking approaches try identify the most important boundaries and assess the consequences of those boundary choices which are taken by systems thinking in action. Following a systems thinking perspective on sustainability management means to accept different world views as of equal rights, to reach a meta-level from which boundary decisions can be assessed, to ask for benefits and disadvantaged, to take values and power into consideration and to reflect on the explicit and implicit decisions of systems thinking approaches themselves.
