2 MAN AND THE BIOSPHERE (MAB) Main structure MAB/ICC 34 UNESCO Member States; 6-7 New Members elected at the time of the General Conference; MAB Bureau MAB/ICC Chair and 5 Vice Chairs representing UNESCO electoral groups MAB National Committees MAB Secretariat the Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences (SC/EES); Director SC/EES is the Secretary of the MAB/ICC MAN AND THE BIOSPHERE (MAB) Launched in 1971 and by 1974, 14 projects in operation Projects 1-7: Ecological effects of human impacts and land use change on: sub-tropical and tropical forests; temperate and Mediterranean forests; savannahs and grazing lands; arid and semi-arid lands; lakes, marshes, rivers, estuaries and coastal zones; mountains; and islands Ecology & Ecosystems Project 8: conservation of natural areas and the genetic resources they contain Conservation & Sustainable Use of Biodiversity Project 9-14: pest management and fertilizers; large irrigation works; urban systems and energy; environmental transformations and human adaptations; perceptions of environmental quality; and environmental pollution and effects on the biosphere Environmental Impact Research & Application 2

3 MAN AND THE BIOSPHERE (MAB) Project 8 Conservation of Natural Areas and the Genetic Resources that they contain World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR) with 482 sites in 102 countries First BRs in 1976; first generation of designations: mainly protected areas and biological/ecological research stations; 1983 First International BR Congress (Minsk); BR Action Plan with core, buffer and transition zones; triple function model of BR in place; second generation of designations Second International BR Congress (Seville); Seville Strategy and Statutory Framework for WNBR; BRs are UNESCO Designations under MAB Programme; BR Advisory Committee directly chosen by UNESCO Director General Biosphere Reserves Learning Sites for Conservation Development relations 3
