3 Erste Zweifel: Wie Konvergenz definieren? Ray-end incidence is defined as 2. But ray-of-double-rays end incidence is undefined and definitions get complicated as iteration levels grow.

It also works for theorems, allows us to extend finite cycle thms to 1. But: we no longer know what infinite cycles (top y defined) look like!

Although we have now defined infinite cyces topologically, it is still our aim to find a combinatorial description, so as to be able to work with them. The example suggests we define end degrees as the maximum number of disjoint or edge-disjoint rays from that end that are contained in the subspace.

Remember: Although we wish to consider R H, the ends! 2 X are ends of G. (Considering the ends of H makes no sense: when H is a 3-circle as in the 3-way ladder, the graph H is just a disjoint union of three double rays, with 6 ends rather than 3, and all of degree 1.) But this definition fails: in the wild circle, the ends have degree 1 even in G. (Counting rays R G for the degree of the ends in H is not only unnatural, it also fails: in the infinite 3-cycle, we could add a third middle ray on each ladder to give these ends degree 3. This would have nothing to do with H, really, but spoil the degree 2 condition in the ends! 2 H \ (G).)

We ll be adding arcs to both sides of A: otherwise A ends in a vx, but this has another nb v in X that will be added at some point. The only way this can happen under our degree assumptions is that we add a v A arc ending at the other end of A, in which case we have completed a circle (and X cannot contain anything else). Each tail of A is connected and has an accumulation point ( G compact), so by Jumping Arc it converges in G to that point (an end), which must be in X (closed). The two ends coincide, as otherwise X = [0, 1], whose endpoints have degree 1 (contradiction).

Joining a vx to an end! requires a top l star-comb lemma argument as in our earlier proof that arc-components of standard subspaces are closed. But we can use that lemma: as shown above, all vertices lie in the same arc-component, and since this is closed it also contains all ends. Alternatively, we could just prove connected and use the lemma that this implies arcconnected for standard subspaces: if it was disconnected it would miss a finite cut, but adding an edge from that cut creates a circle whose back arc must also have an edge in that cut. Don t do this here, since we ll prove the connectivity lemma only later. Converse fails if G is not locally finite and has a dominated end: the closure of an infinite fan for such an end is not arc-conn d. (See earlier FN.)

Since arc-components of standard subspaces are closed (Cor to Lemma 8.5.4, but shown directly earlier), the two arc-components of T r f (which, by def of D f, induce the vx partition of D f ) are closed and thus each contain this end. But then they re not disjoint, contradiction.
