3 Summary This thesis describes the application of pulsed gradient spin echo (PGSE) diffusion and multidimensional MR techniques to study aspects of ion pairing and salt structure in solution. Based on PGSE diffusion data for a variety of transitionmetal, inorganic and organic salts a similar solvent dependence of the ion pairing for the three solvents acetone, dichloromethane and chloroform was found. Consequently, a general trend in the amount of ion pairing is suggested: complete ion pairing in chloroform, intermediate in dichloromethane and small in acetone. unhindered approach hindered approach Ru Cl P Ru C C C(C )(C 10 7 ) Amount of Ion Pairing C C S C localized charge delocalized charge For the frequently used solvent dichloromethane, it is suggested that the amount of ion pairing depends on the nature of the salt. The determining factors responsible for the various degrees of ion pairing found in this solvent are, a) the charge distribution and b) the ability of the anion to approach the positively charged positions. Consequently, the reported approach of combining MR data, DFT calculations and crystallography allows rationalizing the amount of ion pairing in a qualitative way. i

4 In addition, reported E data indicates both subtle and marked changes in the solution structures of related salts. In a series of aryl carbocations, a number of different positions for the anion were found and these results are confirmed by DFT calculations. Accordingly, the anion can be situated either in a position close to the C + center or along the aryl groups or even very close to the parasubstituent and thus quite remote from the carbonium center. C () 2 (C ) 2 C + () 2 + C Furthermore, an observed anion effect was rationalized on the basis of ion pairing and the corresponding solution structures in a series of cationic ruthenium β diketiminate salts. Salts containing the BPh 4 and BArF anions turned out to be less active in the catalytic hydrogenation of styrene to ethylbenzene. It is proposed that the observed lower TF values for these salts result either by a) steric hindrance due to ion pairing or b) the occupation of the coordination sites critical to catalytic activity. In a series of [Pd( allyl)(,chelate)] + salts the observed allyl dynamics fall under the general heading of apparent rotation, while no syn/anti isomerism is found. Based on DFT calculations the isomerization process in these salts is solvent assisted and proceeds with Pd pyr bond breaking. Finally, studies on three cationic hydrido complexes [Ru(C) 4 ][BArF] (C = heterocyclic carbene) are reported which exhibit hydride resonances at very low frequency ( = 41). The ability of these 16electron RuC species to bind small gas molecules varies with the substituent on the carbene ligands. ii

5 Zusammenfassung Die vorliegenden Dissertation beschreibt die Anwendung von gepulsten Gradienten Spin Echo (PGSE) Diffusion und multidimensionalen MR Methoden für die Untersuchung von Ionen Paarung und Salz Struktur in Lösung. Anhand von PGSE Diffusionsdaten einer Vielzahl von Übergangsmetall, anorganischen und organischen Salzen wurde eine übereinstimmende Abhängigkeit der Ionen Paarung in Abhängigkeit des Lösungsmittels gefunden. Es wird daher der folgende allgemeine Trend bezüglich der Menge an Ionen Paarung vorgeschlagen: Vollständig in Chloroform, intermediär in Dichlormethan und wenig in Aceton. unhindered approach hindered approach Ru Cl P Ru C C C(C )(C 10 7 ) Amount of Ion Pairing C C S C localized charge delocalized charge Für das oft verwendete Lösungsmittel Dichlormethan wird vorgeschlagen, dass die Menge an Ionen Paarung von der atur des Salzes abhängt. Die für die unterschiedlichen Mengen an Ionen Paarung verantwortlichen Faktoren in diesem Lösungsmittel sind a) die Ladungsverteilung und b) die Fähigkeit des Anions sich den positiv geladenen Stellen zu nähern. Die beschriebene Methode, welche MR Daten, DFT Berechnungen und Kristallographie kombiniert, erlaubt es, die Menge an Ionen Paarung zumindest qualitativ zu rationalisieren. iii

6 Die beschriebenen E Daten zeigen einerseits subtile und andererseits ausgeprägte Änderungen in der Lösungsstruktur innerhalb ähnlicher Salze. So wurden in einer Reihe von Aryl Carbokationen verschiedene Positionen des Anions bezüglich des Kations gefunden. Diese Ergebnisse konnten mittels DFT Berechnungen gestützt werden. Dementsprechend kann sich das Anion entweder in der ähe des C + Zentrums befinden, entlang der Aryl Gruppen oder aber sogar in der ähe des parasubstituenten und damit relativ weit entfernt vom Carbonium Zentrum. C () 2 (C ) 2 C + () 2 + C Ferner wurde in einer Reihe von kationischen Ruthenium βdiketiminat Salzen ein beobachteter Anion Effekt aufgrund von Überlegungen bezüglich der Ionen Paarung und der entsprechenden Salz Struktur rationalisiert. Salze, welche BPh 4 und BArF als Anion enthalten, zeigten eine verminderte Aktivität bezüglich der katalytischen ydrogenierung von Styrol zu Ethylbenzol. Es wird vorgeschlagen, dass die in diesen Salzen beobachteten tieferen TF Werte durch a) sterische inderung aufgrund der Ionen Paarung oder b) durch die Besetzung von für die katalytische Aktivität kritischen Koordinationsstellen verursacht werden. In einer Reihe von [Pd( allyl)(,chelat)] + Salzen können die bezüglich des Allyl Liganden beobachteten dynamischen Prozesse unter dem Stichwort anscheinende Rotation zusammengefasst werden. Es wurde keine syn/anti Isomerisierung gefunden. Aufgrund von DFT Berechnungen wird der Isomerisierungsprozess in diesen Salzen durch das Lösungsmittel unterstützt, wobei die Pd pyr Bindung gebrochen wird. iv

7 Abschliessend wird über die Untersuchung an [Ru(C) 4 ][BArF] (C = heterozyklisches Carben) Komplexen berichtet, welche eine ydrid Resonanz bei sehr tiefer Frequenz aufweisen ( = 41). Dabei hängt die Fähigkeit dieser 16 Elektronen RuC Verbindungen kleine Gasmolekel zu binden vom Substituenten am Carben Liganden ab. v
