3 Berlin Some Facts General Capital city of Germany and one of the 16 German states (Länder) Administration: Central administration (Senatsverwaltungen) and 12 boroughs Population: about 3.3 million, density: inhabitants/km2 Economy: BIP 2012 about 103,6 billion (lowest in Germany), high unemployment rate (about 12,3 %), mainly service sector, also creative industries, research, media and IT, tourism (about 9 million visitors per year) Green city: Around one third of the city's area is composed of forests, parks, gardens, rivers and lakes Vulnerable to global warming/climate change

4 Climate and energy data Energy supply: high share of natural gas in the energy mix (36,5 % in 2009), electricty production (mainly in cogeneration) to a great extent by hard coal Share of renewable energy is increasing (3.2 % in 2010), though it is below the German average. Only 2.6 % of the electricity in 2011 is from renewable energy (2.1 % is from biomass) High share of cogeneration, district heating Reduction of CO2 emissions per capita by one third since 1990 (6.2 t, German average 11 t). CO2 emissions in total reduced by 7.2 m tons till Berlin is on the right track There is however still a lot to be done!

11 Feasability study Climate neutral Berlin 2050 Focus: Is Berlin able to meet its 2050 target and under which prerequisites? Assessment of energy-related emissions under different scenarios in the following sectors: Private households; commerce, trade, services; industry; transport/mobility; energy supply, consumption Discursive process: Public participation via workshops etc. Contractor: Consortium led by Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) Duration: 12/2012 bis 01/2014

12 Stronger public role in local energy supply I. Local gas and electricity grid currently owned by Vattenfall, legal obligation to contract out the operation every 20th year, (gas expires end of 2013, electricity end of 2014) Application in procurement procedure to purchase the grid infrastructure with newly founded public company Berlin Energie Other applicants: Vattenfall, Alliander, envia M, Stadtwerke Schwäbisch Hall, Thüga, Chinese State Grid, Genossenschaft BürgerEnergie Highly regulated, return of equity could be reinvested in Berlin II. Foundation of public utility company (Stadtwerke) State owned electricy supplier BEWAG was privatised in 1997 Trend in Germany: Re-municipalisation Foundation of Stadtwerke in preperation (business plan, funding) Referendum on November 3rd (Energietisch) Goal: environmental and social focus of the new public business
