Goose Girl (1901) in front of the medival town hall of Göttingen The Mayo Alumni German Speaking Chapter INFORMATION ON THE 21 st ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING 2017 Date and Place Göttingen, Germany, June 23 rd until June 25 th, 2017 Venue Historic University Building, Göttingen Program Friday, June 23 rd 19:00h Informal get-together in the evening Saturday, June 24 th 08:30h Mitgliederversammlung 09:30h Scientific Meeting including presentation of the Rudolf Juchems-Research Award 17:00h Guided city tour (depending on time schedule) 19:30h Formal dinner Topic Application of Light in Medicine and Research We hope to encourage alumni from every field to contribute but certainly also welcome any talk outside this topic. Light in its different wavelength has enlightened researchers and clinicians throughout decades, beginning with light microscopy 1830 (discovery of the cell nucleus by Robert Brown) and application of an arc lamp for endoscopy in 1855 (Antonin Desormeaux). Recent developments include diagnostic applications
(fluorescent angiography; fluorescent guided tumor resection) as well as therapeutic approaches (light therapy; photodynamic therapy; laser applications). Control of gene expression by light has revolutionized genetic research (optogenetics). Surely, there are interesting further applications in many areas Mayo alumni are working in. Culture documenta 14 For Sunday, June 25 th, we will make arrangements for a guided tour to Kassel at the documenta 14. Kassel is situated south-west of Göttingen (0:30h by train) and is hosting the documenta art exhibition of modern and contemporary art every five years since its foundation in 1955. In 2012, documenta 13 attracted 900,000+ visitors. We will formally end our meeting with dinner on Saturday, so nobody would feel obligated to join in. Timeline February 28 th, Finalization of the Scientific Meeting Program If we can count on your active presentation, please return an anticipated title of your talk by February 28 th by e-mail to Kajetan von Eckardstein. February 28 th, Deadline for applications for the Rudolf-Juchems Award If you like to apply for the Rudolf-Juchems Award 2017, please do so by February 28 th. The Mayo Alumni German Speaking Chapter offers the Rudolf Juchems Research Award 2017 for a recent or ongoing scientific project in every field of medicine and adjacent areas conducted at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Scottsdale, or Jacksonville by a fellow German speaking alumni. Cooperative projects with departments of the Mayo Clinic will also be taken into account. The award is endowed with unrestricted prize money of 1,000 Euros. The laureate is obliged to personally accept the prize at the Annual Meeting of the Mayo Alumni German Speaking Chapter and will be asked to present the paper. This year, the chapter will convene in Göttingen, Germany, from June 23 rd to June 24 th, 2017, and will be hosted by Kajetan von Eckardstein, MD. This annual award was founded by cardiologist Rudolf Juchems, MD, PhD ( 2008), and is still donated by his family in memory. Professor Juchems spent his residency in Rochester in the 1950s and returned to Würzburg and Aschaffenburg thereafter. The award is intended to enhance the visibility of the Mayo Alumni German Speaking Chapter and to attract young colleagues returning from their time at the Mayo Clinic. The Mayo Alumni German Speaking Chapter is a group of German speaking physicians, researchers and health professionals that share common values and experiences of having received a part of their training at the Mayo Clinic. The Chapter is holding annual meetings in Germany, Switzerland, or Austria, combining an interdisciplinary scientific program and cultural venues that offer sufficient time to exchange ideas and to reconnect. The selection of the award winning paper from the submission is at the discretion of the Chapter s board. Colleagues wishing to submit an abstract of their project should do so until February 28 th, 2017, and are asked to include a short CV as well as possible publications in conjunction with the work to consider. Submissions should be sent to the chairman Kajetan von Eckardstein, MD (kajetan.voneckardstein@med.uni-goettingen.de). Please to not hesitate to contact the chairman with any other questions in regard to membership in the Chapter or to participation in this year s meeting in Göttingen that we all are looking forward to.
