Outline Introduction Methodology Results Summary & conclusions
Long term goals of German government (25) Overall Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 8 % to 95 % (compared to 199 Cutting the total primary energy demand by 5 % (compared to 28) Renewable energy fraction of 6 % of gros final energy demand Electricity Reduction of consumption by 25 % (compared to 28) Renewable energy fraction of 8 % in electricity production Building sector Almost carbon neutral building sector Reduction of primary energy by 8 %
German greenhouse gas emissions German energy-related CO 2 emissions (211): 2 % of Europe 2.5 % of world our study
Introduction Guiding questions of our analysis Is it possible to cover the German energy demand with a large share of renewable energies? If yes: what is the best composition of such energy system? And what is its cost? Long term perspective on macro-economic level Approach Model of overall energy system based on hourly energy balance Generic optimizer optimum composition and sizing of all components Minimum of total annual cost (re-investment, maintenance, operation, financing)

Outline Introduction Methodology Results Summary & conclusions
Conclusions Reduction of consumption, efficient conversion and renewables are the pillars to achieve long-term greenhouse gas emission targets Under German conditions wind and solar are the key renewable energy sources Electricity will play a dominant role in the future energy system Flexibilization of residual electricity production and use of energy is indispensable in order to be able to install the needed capacity of (fluctuating) renewable energy converters Residual electricity production most favourable by medium and large capacity CHP plants connected to district heating networks Heat pumps play a dominat in the heat supply for buildings Solar thermal energy covers about 15-2 % of the low temperature heat demand
Transition phases of energy systems towards RE Phase 1 (completed) Mainly installation of renewable energy technologies (e.g. wind, PV) without major changes of the overall system Phase 2 (ongoing) Conversion of overall system Increased flexibilization on supply and demand side important Natural gas important Implementation of short term storage Business models for storage and complementary electricity production Push efficiency and saving Phase 3 Implementation of long term storage Increased replacement of natural gas by synthetic fuels from RE
Summary Secure energy supply with a dominating part of renewable energies possible (using only domestic RE ressources) Pre-conditions are reduction of consumption (e.g. building sector, basic electricity) and efficient conversion (e.g. industry, mobility) Total annual cost in same range as today s cost for today s energy system, once transition has been made and components went through their learning curve In long-term perspective cost lower than today because of expected increase of prices for fossil energy sources Higher cost during transition: investments, learning curve for new technologies Many positive effects for national economy, e.g. technology development, employment, strongly decreased dependence on global energy markets
