3 Surge s Überspannungsableiter Introduction Surge arresters in brief Gas -filled surge arresters operate on the gas -physical principle of the highly effective arc discharge. Electrically, surge arresters act as voltage-dependent switches. As soon as the voltage applied to the arrester exceeds the spark -over voltage, an arc is formed in the hermetically s ealed discharge region within nanos econds. The high s urge current handling capability and the arc voltage, which is almost independend of the current, short-circuit the overvoltage. When the d ischarge has d ied down, the arrester extinguishes and the internal resistance immediately return s to values of s everal 100 M Ω. The surge arrester thus meets almost perfectly all requirements made on a protective element. It reliably limits the overvoltage to permissible values, and under normal operating conditions the high insulation resistance and the low capacitance contribute to the fact that an arre s ter has v irtually no impact on the s y s tem to be protected. 6 Applications Applications Gas -filled surge arresters are classical components for protecting the installations of the telecommunications. It is essential that IT and telecommunications systems - with their high-grade but sensitive electronic circuits - be protected by arre s ters. They are thus f itted at the input of the power supply system together with varistors and at the connection points to telecommunication lines. They have become equally indispens able for protecting bas e stations in mobile telephone systems as well as extensive cable television (CAT) networks w ith their repeaters and distribution s ys tems. These protective components are also indispensable in other s ectors : In AC power trans mission s ys tems, they are often us ed with current-limiting varistors In customer premises equipment such as DSL modems, WLAN routers, T sets and cable modems In air-conditioning equipment The integral black -box concept offers graduated protection by combining arresters with varistors, PTC thermistors, diodes and inductors to create an ideal solution for many applications. Typical circuits used to protect them w ith s urge arre s ters are s hown in Fig. 1. Thes e arre s ters protect again s t common-mode interference voltages, i.e.surge voltages that appear in both lines to ground. In the event of an overvoltage, the arrester protects both exchange lines by conducting the surge current away to ground. Signal line protection Signal circuits are often run with no ground conductor. A 2-electrode arres ter circuit located between the two signal lines prevents the formation of large potential d ifferences at the input of the equipment to be protected before they can cause any damage (Fig. 2 ). This circuit offers differential-mode protection. Telefon-/Fax-/Modem-Schutz Telefonanlagen, Faxgeräte und Modems sind mit hochwertiger, aber auch empfindlicher Elektronik ausgestattet, d ie vor Übers pannungen ges chütz t werden muss. Typische Schaltungen für den Schutz mit n zeigt Bild 1. Hierbei schütz en die gegen Gleichtak t- S törs pannungen (common-mode protection), d.h. gegen Übers pannungen, die auf beiden Leitungen gegen das Erdpotential auftreten. Dabei verbindet der im Fall einer Beeinflussung die beiden Amts leitungen mit dem Erdpotential. Signalleitungsschutz Signalstromkreise werden häufig erdungsfrei geführt. Die Schaltung eines 2-Elektroden-s zwischen den beiden Signalleitungen am E ingang deszu s chütz enden Gerätes vermeidet größere Potentialunters chiede, d ie S chäden verurs achen k önnten (Bild 2 ). The arrester is contained in the coaxial protection module where it is connected between the central conductor and the shielding. It is recommended to ground either the shielding or the housing of the protection module, depending on the application (Fig. 11). AC line protection Telecommunications installations as well as CAT amplif iers, CB trans m itters, home entertainment s y s tems, computers and similar equipment can be exposed to voltage surges conducted via the power network. The combination of a s urge arre s ter and a varistor offers proven protection in thes e cas es. The phas e and neutral conductors are connected to ground potential of both protection elements (Fig. 12). EPCOS arresters can be used in SPD (Surge Protective Devices ), which fulfill EN/IEC class I, II or III requirements. Kabelfernsehen/Coax-Leitungsschutz Für den Übers pannungsschutz von Coax-Leitungen, w ie sie in K abelferns ehnetz en üblicherweise verlegt werden, e ignen sich bes onders gut, da sie aufgrund ihrer niedrigen Eigenkapazität von typ. 0,5 bis 1 pf das System auch bei hohen Frequenzen nicht beeinflussen. In dem Coax-S chutz modul wird der z wischen z entralem Leiter und S chirm ges chaltet. Abhängig von der Anwendung empfiehlt sich die Erdung des Schirms b zw. des Gehäuse s des Schutzmoduls (Bild 11). Netzschutz Anlagen des Telek ommunikations netz e s sowie CAT- er s tärk er, CB-S endeanlagen, Home-Entertainment-Anlagen, Computer etc. können auch Übers pannungen ausgesetzt sein, die über das Stromnetz eingeleitet werden. Ein bewährter S chutz is t hier die K ombination von e inem Übers pannungs ableiter und e inem ar istor.
