3 General information Smoking There is a smoking ban in Germany, which means smoking is not allowed in public transport or buildings. Some restaurants, cafés and bars or clubs have designated smoking areas. Many bars and pubs do not offer this facility so that you will have to stand out in the street if you wish to smoke. Business Hours Shops open between 9 and 10 a.m. from Monday to Saturday, but closing hours vary considerably. During the week, this can be between 6 and 8 p.m. On Saturdays some shops already close at 2 p.m, others between 6 and 8 p.m. Supermarkets usually have longer opening hours, Monday to Saturday: 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. or even later. On Sundays and public holidays, all shops are closed except for those located in Hanover Central Station. Electricity In Germany, sockets are of European standard with a supply voltage of 230 V. Either the so-called two-prong Europlugs or the Schuko plugs are used. Should this standard differ from your home country, we advise you to carry an adapter. Water Quality Tap water in Hanover is generally safe to drink. Tipping In Germany, service and VAT are included in the price. Nevertheless tipping is common practice and expected in restaurants, bars and other services used during your stay. You may pay the total plus tip and say Stimmt so, meaning keep the change. Dividing up the bill: This custom is very common in Germany when going out in a crowd. In this case, waiters will bill you individually. Weather We hope for a warm summer (20-30 C), however, there might be showers of rain. Therefore, please bring along a water-proof coat and at least one warm sweater. Wireless Network The Hochschule Hannover - University of Applied Sciences and Arts offers wireless network. During your stay you will get a guest account. 4 About the Hochschule Hannover With more than 10,000 students the Hochschule Hannover is the second largest university in Hanover. Institutionalized in 1971 from various educational precursors, the oldest dating back to the year 1791, the HsH offers a particularly wide range of subjects in five different faculties. The Hochschule Hannover is particularly outstanding when it comes to a rather short duration of studies and an intensive practical orientation in teaching. That is why graduates meet with high acceptance in the industry. Work placements that have been included in the study pro grammes ensure that students gain firsthand experience on the job and have the chance to establish important contacts in companies. A very special feature among the subjects are the specific courses which combine on-the-job training with university study. The Hochschule Hannover encourages and supports international mobility of students and staff to keep up with the growing globalization of the economy. 9 Welcome to Hanover Hanover, situated in the heart of Europe, enjoys international reputation as trade fair and convention venue. The Hannover Messe is the biggest exhibition centre in the world, hosting prestigious events such as the CeT, HANNOVER MESSE and EMO trade fair. In addition to that a number of renowned higher education institutions are located in the city of Hanover. Around 37,000 students are enrolled in a wide variety of disciplines offered by the different universities and various private academies in the city. More than 500,000 inhabitants and numerous visitors benefit from the variety of opportunities in Hanover, the capital of Lower Saxony. The city offers not only city forests, parks and attractive recreation areas but also an extensive pedestrian zone and shopping malls located directly in the city centre. Here, in the centre of Hanover, you may find the beautiful Old Town quarter too. In case you need a place to relax or to take a walk, visit the Eilenriede, Europe s biggest city forest, or the Maschsee Lake, where the Mediterranean flair will make you feel like you are on vacation

10 Popular Sights Kröpcke Nowadays, the Kröpcke is the centre of the city. It is one of the most popular meeting places in Hanover. There, you will find many shops and a number of shopping malls. Eilenriede Europe s biggest city forest is located in the heart of the city. It is a popular destination for a daily walk and playground for families with children. Market Church The Market Church, situated at the market place, was built in the 14th century. The market place is the centre of the Old Town of Hanover. New Town Hall Built between , the New Town Hall is dating from the Wilhelmine period. Sprengel Museum Hannover An internationally renowned museum of contemporary fine art. Aegidien Church A church, built in the 14th century and destroyed in World War II, is now a memorial to commemorate the vicitims of the war. Royal Garden of Herrenhausen Experience baroque splendour, fountains and the Grotto by Niki de Saint Phalle in the Great Garden. Botanical treasures and glasshouses filled with blooming orchids can be found in the Berggarten. Maschsee Lake One of the city s most popular destinations for a walk. The artificial lake, built between 1934 and 1936 attracts numerous joggers, cyclists and inline skaters every day. The giant carps living in the lake, eagerly waiting for bread crumbs, are especially favoured by the public. 11 Time for Food and Drinks Restaurants You can find all sorts of restaurants in Hanover. The city offers all kinds of international food: Local cuisine, Thai, Oriental, Italian, Greek, Australian... just to name a few. You will find the perfect restaurant that suits your needs. Bars Hanover has a lot of bars and pubs. The best loca tion for a beer and cocktail is Linden. Just walk along the Limmer Straße and you will find a lot of bars and restaurants. If you want to enjoy the nightlife of Berlin you will not even know where to start. There is such a variety of clubs, bars and restaurants. Opposite the,,ostbahnhof is the Berghain Club. Great electronic music but it s very hard to get access because the doorman is very strict. Berlin is very big. Our collection of nice places is only a tiny extract.
