Bei all dem, mit dem wir in den Unternehmen heute tagtäglich konfrontiert werden, drängt sich ein klares Nein als Antwort auf Unsicherheit bezüglich des EEG, der Entwicklung des Marktes für CO 2 -Zertifikate und einiges mehr. Dabei dienen die anteiligen EEG-Befreiungen ausschließlich dazu, die energieintensiven deutschen Unternehmen A. Sieverdingbeck im internationalen Wettbewerb nicht all zu sehr zu benachteiligen. Mancher Entscheidungsträger wendet dieser Tage neidische Blicke in Richtung USA. Und manche Unternehmen stimmen hier schon mit den Füßen ab und investieren in den USA und nicht mehr in Europa. Diese Entwicklung ist hochgradig kritisch, hat doch, wie alle bekennen, der industrielle Kern Deutschlands ermöglicht, die Folgen der Krise 2009 weitgehend abzufedern. Hierbei ist die Metallindustrie ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der industriellen Wertschöpfungsketten in Deutschland. Ohne die Erzeugung von Kupfer, Aluminium, Blei und Zink aber auch Stahl in Deutschland wären die sogenannten Schlüsselindustrien wie Automobilbau und Maschinenbau in Deutschland nicht so erfolgreich, wie sie es zum Glück für unsere Volkswirtschaft zur Zeit noch sind. Im Bereich der Bleierzeugung ist die Lage noch ein wenig angespannter. Blei steht ganz oben auf der Liste der kritisch beäugten Metalle. Die aktuellen Grenzwertdiskussionen sind hier nur die Spitze des Eisbergs. Die allgemeine Wahrnehmung von Blei in der Öffentlichkeit ist die eines Schmuddelkindes der Metalle. Dabei ist Blei das Metall mit der höchsten Recyclingquote und es ist nach wie vor unverzichtbar für die Energiespeicherung in Kraftfahrzeugen und stationären Anwendungen. Mit neuen Batteriekonzepten kann Blei sogar einen wesentlichen Beitrag in Hybridfahrzeugen leisten. Wir müssen allerdings dafür Sorge tragen, dass unsere Umgebung diesen nachhaltigen Beitrag auch wahrnimmt. Neben all diesen das Tagesgeschäft bestimmenden industriepolitischen Gedanken gibt es noch zwei weitere Punkte, die mir beim Schreiben dieses Textes durch den Kopf gehen. Zum einen hat sich in diesen 303

Dieser Glücksfall der deutschen Geschichte war weniger auf planvolles Handeln als mehr auf die glückliche Verkettung von Ereignissen zurückzuführen. Ein Grund mehr für dieses Ereignis dankbar zu sein. Daneben bewegen wir uns mit großen Schritten auf die Weihnachtszeit zu, eine Zeit in der wir versuchen sollten, ein wenig zu entschleunigen. 4 6 / 2014 Reflecting-light microscopic photo of Mg chip sample; p. 333 Contents Bergbau- Gedenkmedaille 30 Jahre Besucherbergwerk Reinhold-Forster-Erbstollen Das Besucherbergwerk Reinhold-Forster-Erbstollen in Siegen-Eiserfeld hat im letzten Jahr sein 30-jähriges Bestehen gefeiert. Anlässlich des Jubiläums wurde nun eine Gedenkmedaille geprägt, um die ehrenamtliche Arbeit des Eiserfelder Heimatvereins zur Erhaltung dieses bedeutenden Bergbaumonu ments zu würdigen, Herausgeber ist die Barbara Rohstoffbetriebe GmbH als Rechtsnachfolger der früheren Betreiber der Siegerländer Bergwerke. Es handelt sich um das erste Medaillen-Projekt dieser Art; in der Folge möchten die Barbara Rohstoffbetriebe jedes Jahr eine neue Medaille in Zusammen arbeit mit verschiedenen Vereinen gestalten. Die Gedenkprägung ist nach Angaben der Herausgeber sehr werthaltig, da nur eine limitierte Auflage von insgesamt 208 Exemplaren in Feinsilber (Gehalt: 99,9 Gew.-%) geprägt worden ist. In den freien Verkauf werden voraussichtlich nur ca. 100 Stück gehen. Die Medaille in Stempelglanz-Ausführung hat einen Durchmesser von 40 mm und wiegt etwa eine Unze (ca. 30 g). Sie wird zusammen mit einem Zertifikat in einem Präsentationsetui zum Preis von 50 (zzgl. Versandkosten) verkauft. Alternativ wird noch eine auf 100 Exemplare limitierte Auflage an Bronzemedaillen angeboten (Preis: 10, zzgl. Versandkosten). Der gesamte Erlös fließt in den Unterhalt des Stollens. Erhältlich ist die neue Gedenkmedaille beim Eiserfelder Heimatverein und während der Öffnungszeiten des Besucherbergwerks Reinhold-Forster-Erbstollen (Tel ). 5 Economics, Technology and Science Economics Growth in transport drives rising demand for aluminium. New data from the European Aluminium Association (EAA) predicts a bright future for aluminium in the European market, driven primarily by thriving demand for its applications in transport. End-use demand for aluminium in Europe will almost double in the coming decades, from 12 mill. t/a today to a staggering 20 mill. t by This is mainly a result of aluminium s growing use in transport, which has almost tripled since the 1990s. Indeed the European market is expected to grow from around 3.8 mill. t/a today to 7 mill. t in 2050, with the average use of aluminium per European citizen rising by nearly 64 % to 36 kg by The transport and packaging sectors are driving demand for flat and rolled aluminium products, with a growth rate of 3.1 % foreseen in 2014 and 3.3 % in Demand is also slightly picking up for extruded products, particularly in the building sector, with forecasts projecting a rise of 1.5 % this year and 1.6 % in EAA data also shows that Europe has become the world champion of aluminium recycling, producing 11 kg of recycled aluminium per person per year vs. approximately 4 kg for the rest of the world. We have a significant recycling capacity of 12.3 mill. t/a, but we can do even better if we secure Europe s supply of recycled material, Gerd Götz added. (Press Release, October 8, 2014) Europäische Kupfergusslegierungshersteller nach robustem Jahr 2013 weiter im Aufwind. Die europäischen Kupfergusslegierungshersteller (OE- CAM) haben sich im vergangenen Jahr positiv entwickelt. Auch im laufenden Jahr rechnet der Verband mit einer Zunahme der Produktionsmenge. Dies erklärte der Präsident der OECAM, Anton Bauer, im Rahmen der Mitgliederversammlung am 19. September 2014 auf Einladung der Nordic Brass Gusum AB in Stockholm, Schweden. Der 1989 in Venedig gegründete europäische Verband feierte in Stockholm sein 25jähriges Bestehen. Unter Berücksichtigung der Produktionszahlen für das 1. und 2. Quartal 2014 ist mit einer Produktionssteigerung von 308 etwa 5 % gegenüber dem Jahr 2013 zu rechnen, so Bauer. Die Branche stellt hauptsächlich Messing, gefolgt von Zinn-, Bronze- und Rotgusslegierungen her, die überwiegend in der Sanitärindustrie eingesetzt werden. Ein wesentliches Thema des diesjährigen Meetings war die Diskussion über die drohende Begrenzung des Bleigehalts auf max. 300 ppm in Kupferlegierungen. Bei höheren Gehalten sollen die Legierungen als reprotoxisch eingestuft werden. Die Verbandsmitglieder sind sehr besorgt über das Vorgehen der Europäischen Kommission, zu dem keine validen Studien vorliegen, die eine Schädlichkeit der Legierungen in der Praxis belegen. Die Branche plädiert für eine Entscheidung auf der Grundlage realistischer Untersuchungen. Dem Verband sind im Augenblick 16 Mitgliedsunternehmen von der Türkei bis nach Schweden angeschlossen. Die wichtigsten Abnehmerländer von Kupferlegierungsblöcken sind Deutschland und Italien, gefolgt von Frankreich und der Türkei. Higher operating and capital costs, lower ore grades, uncertain demand for commodities and investor discontent have required major companies to focus on a return to healthy margins after years of growth-oriented spending. To that end, the majors have been divesting noncore assets and cutting back on capital project and exploration spending, which has led to an unsurprising 25 % drop in the majors exploration budget total in The juniors continue to battle lackluster investor interest, which has forced the group to rein in spending in order to conserve funds. Despite base metals budgets falling by US$ 1 bn, their collective share of total budgets increased 2 % to reach the highest level since Base metals and gold allocations have a consistently inverse relationship in terms of their shares of overall budgets. (Press Release, October 21, 2014) Novelis eröffnet weltgrößtes Aluminium-Recyclingwerk. Novelis, weltweit führend in der Herstellung von Aluminium-Walzprodukten und im Aluminium-Recycling, eröffnete am 1. Oktober 2014 in Nachterstedt, Sachsen-Anhalt, am Standort des dort bereits bestehenden Walzwerks, das bisher weltgrößte Aluminium- Recyclingcenter (Abbildung 2). Das Unternehmen investierte 200 Mio. in die neue Anlage, die künftig bis zu t Aluminiumschrott im Jahr verarbeiten wird. In dieser hochmodernen Anlage werden täglich rund 1400 t Schrotte, vorwiegend Getränkedosen, per LKW angeliefert. Diese werden geschreddert und Verunreinigungen aussortiert. In drei Drehrohröfen werden die Schrotte bei ca. 400 C entlackt und anschließend eingeschmolzen. Das flüssige Aluminium (ca. 750 C) wird sodann in Halteöfen überführt und zu rund 55 Barren à 25 t gegossen. Die gesamte Produktion ist eingehaust und mit einer hocheffizienten Absauganlage versehen. Zum einen sollen so Emissionen vermieden und so die Gefahren durch Aluminiumstaub minimiert werden. Zum anderen werden so die Verluste an Prozesswärme minimiert und weitestgehend wieder genutzt. Die fertigen Barren werden per Bahn an eigene Warmwalzwerke nach Neuss- Economics, Technology and Science Norf und ins schweizerische Sierre weitertransportiert. Anschließend werden sie zur Weiterverarbeitung an Unternehmensstandorte von Novelis in ganz Europa verteilt. Der Bedarf an Blechen im Walzwerk Nachterstedt wird dabei aus Norf gedeckt. Die fertigen Aluminiumbleche werden vorwiegend an Kunden in der Automobil- und Getränkedosenindustrie ausgeliefert. Dr. Erwin Mayr, Senior Vice President von Novelis und President von Novelis Europe, betonte die optimalen Randbedingungen, die das Land Sachsen- Anhalt für den Ausbau des Werkes in Nachterstedt zur Verfügung gestellt hat. Durch die Schaffung einer optimalen Infrastruktur und auch mit direkter Förderung können in Zukunft im Recyclingcenter mehr als 200 Mitarbeiter beschäftigt werden. u.wa Hydro: Preparations for a new recycling line for used beverage cans completed. Not one gram of used aluminium should be lost that is the philosophy of Hydro, one of the leading manufacturer of rolled products made from this unique material of the future. At Aluminium 2014 in Düsseldorf, Hydro has announced that the plans for a new integrated recycling line for used beverage cans (UBC line) at its Rheinwerk Plant in Neuss are now complete. Preparations for the construction of this new UBC line, the most modern of its type in the world, will begin in November The key highlight of the 45 mill. investment is the sensor technology developed by Hydro s Research and Development Centre for the identification and separation of scrap according to type. Meanwhile, all plans for operating the new recycling plant at Neuss have been finalised. The contracts for the two main sections have already been awarded. Küttner Non Ferrous in Essen, technology experts in the supply of integrated system solutions for melting equipment in the non-ferrous industry, will take care of the hot section, i.e. the remelting furnaces. The cold-section work including the supply of equipment for the shredding, sorting and processing of used aluminium prior to the remelting process have gone to Albert Hoffmann GmbH in Eschweiler. Plant commissioning is scheduled for the end of Around 40 new employees will be required for the new plant, which covers an area of 20,000 m² and is designed to increase recycling capacity at Rheinwerk to 100,000 t/a. With regard to environmental impact, Hydro will use state-of-the-art recycling processes to ensure that further 50,000 t of reprocessed aluminium from the new recycling plant in Neuss can be produced using only 5 % of the energy required, for example, for the equivalent production of primary aluminium. As a result of successful projects like these, Hydro has repeatedly been at the top of its industry in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. (alcircle.com, November 11, 2014) Novelis opens China s first manufacturing facility for heat-treated aluminum automotive sheet. Novelis officially opened China s first plant dedicated to the production of heat-treated aluminum automotive sheet (Figure 3). The opening makes Novelis the only company to produce automotive aluminum sheet in all three of the world s major automobile producing regions Asia, Europe and North America. The wholly-owned facility, located in the Changzhou National Hi-Tech District, represents a $ 100 mill. investment by Novelis to expand its global footprint to serve the rapidly growing market for automotive aluminum. With an annual capacity of 120,000 t, the new facility will assist China in meeting its environmental goals and provide customers in Asia and abroad with high-quality automotive sheet for use in lightweight World of Metallurgy ERZMETALL 67 (2014) No

Since 2011, Novelis has invested more than $ 550 mill. globally to triple its automotive sheet capacity to 900,000 t by Currently, Novelis aluminum products are now featured in more than 180 models of vehicles produced by leading automakers around the globe. Novelis forecasts the global demand from automakers for aluminum sheet will grow by approximately 30 % each year through the end of the decade. (Press Release, October 28, 2014) Alunorf gets yet another energy award. Alunorf, the world s largest aluminium rolling plant and a 50-percent Hydro joint venture, has won yet another energy award in Germany. DENA (the German Energy Agency) has conferred an Energy Efficiency Award 2014 to Alunorf, one of three energy-efficiency projects in the private sector to receive the award. Aluminium Norf GmbH (Alunorf) took the first prize for optimizing energy consumption in the aluminium annealing process. (Alunorf recently won the Energy Award 2014 from the German Energy Academy.) (Press Release, November 13, 2014) Geschäftsjahr 2013/2014: Trimet hat Weichen für künftiges Wachstum gestellt, integriert neue Standorte und weitet Produktangebot aus. Die Trimet Aluminium SE hat das Geschäftsjahr 2013/2014 mit einem Konzernumsatz von 1,3 Mrd. (Vorjahr: 1,2 Mrd. ) abgeschlossen. Durch eine Steigerung der Produktionsmengen von Primäraluminium und die Ergänzung des Produktangebots konnte sich der Werkstoffspezialist trotz niedriger Weltmarktpreise für Aluminium behaupten. Erfreulicherweise war die Nachfrage, getragen von einem zunehmenden Aluminiumboom im Automobilsektor, durchweg auf Rekordniveau. Mit einer Eigenkapitalquote von 43 % verfügt das nicht börsennotierte Unternehmen über eine solide Handlungsbasis. Durch die Übernahme zweier Produktionsstandorte in Frankreich und der Aluminiumhütte in Voerde konnte Trimet im abgelaufenen Geschäftsjahr die anhaltend hohe Nachfrage nach Aluminiumlegierungen und -halbzeugen mit zusätzlichen Mengen bedienen. Die Kapazitäten der Aluminiumhütten, Gießereien und Umschmelzwerke des Unternehmens waren vollständig ausgelastet und produzierten insgesamt rund t Aluminium. Mit 2700 Mitarbeitern erzielte das Familienunternehmen ein Jahresergebnis von 32,3 Mio. (inkl. 21,5 Mio. Erstkonsolidierungseffekt Trimet France). Im laufenden Geschäftsjahr rechnet der Werkstoffspezialist mit einer weiter wachsenden Nachfrage. Unsere Auftragsbücher sind auch für das kommende Jahr schon nahezu vollständig gefüllt. Aufgrund der großen Nachfrage gibt es bereits ein Aluminium-Defizit in der westlichen Welt. Deshalb werden wir die Produktionskapazitäten unserer bestehenden Standorte weiter ausbauen, sagt Dr. Martin Iffert, Vorsitzender des Vorstands der Trimet Aluminium SE. Die Ende Mai 2014 übernommene Aluminiumhütte in Voerde verfügt über eine Produktionskapazität von t/a und ist in Europa führend in der Produktion von hochreinem Aluminium. Diese Qualitäten werden unter anderem für anspruchsvolle Hüttengusslegierungen benötigt. Dafür investiert das Familienunternehmen in die Erweiterung seiner Gießerei am Standort Essen. Eine neue Stranggussanlage mit einer Kapazität von t/a wird dort im kommenden Jahr in Betrieb gehen. Mit den Produktionswerken in Saint-Jeande-Maurienne und Castelsarrasin hat Trimet sein Portfolio um Aluminiumdraht erweitert. Die Produktionskapazität der Aluminiumhütte in Saint- Jean-de-Maurienne wird Trimet bis Jahresende von t auf t Primäraluminium pro Jahr ausbauen. Die Standorte in Frankreich hatte Trimet im Dezember 2013 in einem Joint-Venture mit dem französischen Energieversorger EDF übernommen und wird in den kommenden drei Jahren rund 100 Mio. in deren Ausbau und Modernisierung investieren. Mit neuen Verfahren zur Flexibilisierung der Aluminiumelektrolyse leistet Trimet einen Beitrag zur Stabilisierung der Stromnetze und zur Anpassung industrieller Produktionsanlagen an eine schwankende Energieversorgung. Im Rahmen der Abschaltverordnung wurden im abgelaufenen Geschäftsjahr zweimal Produktionsanlagen der Trimet kurzfristig vom Netz genommen, um ernsthafte Netzstörungen zu vermeiden. Alcoa officially opened the world s largest aluminium-lithium plant in Lafayette, Indiana where it produces advanced, third-generation aluminumlithium alloys for the aerospace industry (Figure 4). Aircraft manufacturers are increasingly turning to lighter and stronger aluminium-lithium alloys, which are less expensive than titanium and composites and enable better fuel efficiency and lower maintenance costs. To keep pace with demand, the Company has expanded its aluminium-lithium capabilities at the Alcoa Technical Center outside Pittsburgh, at its Kitts Green facility in the United Kingdom, and in Lafayette. Already, Alcoa has contracted $ 100 mill. in aluminium-lithium revenues for Alcoa s Lafayette cast house, located next to its extrusion plant, can produce more than 20,000 t of aluminium-lithium annually making it the largest facility of its kind in the world. The Lafayette facility is uniquely capable of making the world s largest aluminium-lithium ingots approximately 50 % larger than the nearest competitor, and big enough to make any single-piece component on today s aircraft. Complementing that capability, Alcoa operates the world s widest, 220 rolling mill at its facility in Davenport, Iowa, making it the only company capable of producing single-piece aluminium-lithium wing skins for the largest commercial airplanes. (Press Release, October 3, 2014) Emirates Global Aluminium to open a $ 3 bn worth alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi. The chief executive of stateowned Emirates Global Aluminium, Abdulla Kalban, announced that they are planning to build an alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi and investing $ 3 bn for it. Kalban told reporters that the feasibility studies reveal that by the end of 2017, the refinery will become operational. He stated that the prime intension behind building the refinery is to secure their own important materials adding that the refinery would be able to produce 4 mill. t annually once it reaches full capacity. The $15-bn worth Emirates Global Aluminium emerged after a merger last year between Abu Dhabi s Emirates Aluminium (Emal) and Dubai Aluminium (Dubal) making it the fifth largest aluminium company in the world. (alcircle.com, September 24, 2014) Klesch Group s Aldel to restart production in The Dutch smelter named Aluminium Delfzijl (Aldel) owned by the Klesch Group had applied for bankruptcy 10 months ago but they are now planning to start production early next year. Klesch, the Swiss-based commodities company said that their decision was based on the improving global aluminium market as well as a proposed deal to use the German power grid to run the smelter. The latter will help them secure cheap German electricity to power the smelter, cutting costs. The smelter plans to start modestly with an output of 100,000 t/a to cater to the fast growing automotive industry. The smelter, that has an annual capacity of 170,000 t, aims to appoint 200 people by the end of Klesch Group, owned by the American billionaire Gary Klesch, had bought the smelter in 2009 but by January this year they had applied for bankruptcy due to the lack of an economic energy deal. The last two years had been bad for the aluminium industry in general due to low metal prices and oversupply. Many smelters had cut back production to recover from losses. However, the market is already recovering and supply is expected to go into deficit next year boosting prices. The benchmark LME has also seen a huge improvement this year making a positive climb of 15 % compared to last year s drop of 13 %. McClean Lake mill is located 70 km from the $ 2.4 bn Cigar Lake mine, which is 50%-owned by Cameco, 37.1 % by Areva, % by Idemitsu and 5 % by Tepco Resources. The mill was idled in 2010 and has since been undergoing modifications to allow it to process ore from the Cigar Lake uranium mine. Operated by Areva, the mill is 70%-owned by Areva Resources Canada, 22.5 % by Denison Mines and 7.5 % by OURD Canada. With an annual production capacity of 10,900 t of uranium ore, the mill is expected to produce 770 t to 1100 t of uranium concentrate from Cigar Lake over the year. Areva said in a statement: The McClean Lake mill is the only facility in the world designed to process high-grade uranium ore without dilution. (miningtechnology.com, October 9, 2014) Boliden will launch an independent nickel smelting business, buying nickel concentrates from external suppliers and selling nickel matte to nickel refineries. The annual production is estimated to remain at 25,000 t of nickel in matte. The combined copper and nickel smelter, Boliden Harjavalta in Finland, has been smelting nickel concentrates since the mid 1950 s. For several years Boliden Harjavalta has been smelting nickel concentrates owned by external parties for a fee a system known as tolling. In 2013, approximately 250,000 t of nickel concentrates were processed into nickel matte, containing about 25,000 t of nickel, for further treatment at external nickel refineries. In connection with the current tolling contract expiring, Boliden World of Metallurgy ERZMETALL 67 (2014) No

9 will change its nickel business model to more resemble the model for the Group s copper and zinc business. Instead of processing nickel concentrates for customers Boliden will buy concentrates from a variety of mines and sell the nickel matte to nickel refineries. The global market for nickel is approximately 2 mill. t/a and the Chinese stainless steel producers are the most important buyers. Global smelter capacity reductions and new nickel mines coming on stream are expected to result in increased demand for nickel smelting. La Farga has been awarded three of the most relevant high-speed railway sector projects to be implemented during 2014 to 2015; Haramain High Speed Mecca Medina (Saudi Arabia), Ligne Grand Vitesse Tours Bordeaux (France) and railway line connecting Metz, in the French Alsace region, and Strasbourg. All requiring products of high technological content and a total installation of 1100 km. LGV SEA and Metz Strasbourg projects consist of a high-speed and double-track rail line of approximately 415 km between Tours and Bordeaux and 150 km between Metz and Strasbourg. La Farga is currently supplying more than 2000 km of high-speed and conventional rail lines electrification product. The Group s latest investments on machinery and technical staff have allowed an increase of production, even doubling its alloy product capacity. La Farga is currently the main European manufacturer of railway electrification and high-speed rail lines. La Farga s rail products have recently obtained accreditation in Rumania, an important achievement for the company s commercial strategic expansion to Eastern Europe. (Press Release, September 2014) Boliden boosts zinc capacity at Odda. Boliden has taken the decision to increase capacity at its Odda zinc smelter in Norway from 170,000 to 200,000 t/a of zinc. The facility is expected to achieve the new capacity level, which entails an investment totalling NOK 350 mill., in the latter half of Boliden Odda has successfully improved its cost position in recent years, with the help of an extensive action programme. In order to further boost the facility s position and to make maximum use of the zinc smelter s capacity, further improvement areas have been identified. (Press Release, November 10, 2014) Technology VHE has developed a new thimble removing machine. VHE has designed and fabricated a thimble removal press with several novel features. The machine was installed in a smelter in Iceland in mid Thimble is associated with the process of aluminium smelting where it forms the metal brushings attached to the anode stems. They are usually made up of cast iron and need to be removed frequently so that the anode stem can be reused after cleaning and the metal remains of the thimble can be sent to recycling. The thimble press is designed for use with stubs arranged three in line but may be adapted for other configurations. Uniquely, the design permits the machine to automatically adjust to yokes with different stem offsets, a necessary feature at certain smelters. When a rod enters the press the stem is clamped with a set of hydraulically operated rollers which permit the secured rod to move vertically during the thimble removal process. Three pairs of hydraulically operated clamps close around the stubs immediately above the thimbles. These clamps have adequate tolerance to accommodate bent stubs. A single 500 mm bore hydraulic cylinder provides the breaking force, moving an anvil head upwards to engage the bottoms of all three thimbles and forcing them against the three pairs of stub clamps, breaking the thimbles. The thimble pieces fall in chutes on either side of the machine from where they are delivered to a discharge conveyor for further processing. A state-of-the-art hydraulic power pack ensures that adequate pressure and flow is maintained at all times, through the use of two 75 kw motors driving variable displacement pumps. Steel and aluminium plant processing technology, equipment and services specialist SMS Siemag supplied a complete cold rolling mill to Turkey-based aluminium company Asas-Alüminyum for its new works at Adapazan- Akyazi, about 150 km to the east of Istanbul. Asas-Alüminyum s new works, estimated at about 250 mill., has been designed for a future capacity of t/a and has an overall surface area of m 2. It comprises a strip caster, cold-rolling mill with strip-processing line and a foil rolling mill. The facility is currently undergoing acceptance tests, with plans to start full production in this quarter. The cold-rolling mill comprises a sixhigh mill stand, three shearing lines and a strip-coating line designed for t/a. The mill stand is equipped with intermediate and work-roll bending, the first of this type of construction in Turkey. Further, on the basis of its design, such as the degree of automation, it is one of the most up to date of its type, according to the company. The cold-rolling stand reduces the cast strips in widths of up to 2200 mm, to gauges of down to 0.1 mm and at rolling speeds of m/min. Depending on the desired final condition, these products are manufactured as strips and sheet for differing intended uses, such as architectural strip for subsequent painting or as prerolled strip for the foil rolling mill, SMS Siemag explains. To ensure European standards regarding flatness, the mill stand is also equipped with a strip tensiometer roll and with a hot-edge spray system. (Press Release, October 2014) Größter Hochofen Europas angeblasen: Schwelgern 2 erschmilzt wieder Roheisen. Das Feuer brennt, der Hochofen 2 in Duisburg-Schwelgern läuft wieder. Gut drei Monate war hier die Produktion ausgesetzt worden, um erforderliche Modernisierungsarbeiten durchzuführen. Dieser Tage wurde das Hochofengefäß mit Holz und Koks gefüllt und durch heiße Luft entfacht, das sogenannte Anblasen. Anschließend wurde die Roheisen-Erzeugung im größten Hochofen Europas schrittweise hochgefahren. Neben diesem Aggregat war auch die Stranggießanlage 1 in Beeckerwerth modernisiert worden. Die Ertüchtigung der SGA 1, einer von drei Stranggießanlagen im Duisburger Norden, fand parallel zu den Maßnahmen am Schwelgern 2 statt, um die Beeinträchtigungen in der Fertigungskette so gering wie möglich zu halten. Zwischenzeitlich ist auch diese Anlage wieder in Betrieb gegangen. Bis zur Produktionsunterbrechung im Juni hatte Schwelgern 2 seit seinem Start vor 21 Jahren insgesamt etwa 78 Mio. t Roheisen erschmolzen. Damit zählt er zu den Top zehn der größten Hochöfen weltweit. Bei dem umfassenden Modernisierungsprozess wurde unter anderem die etwa 2 m dicke, feuerfeste Ausmauerung des Hochofengefäßes erneuert. Allein dafür wurden mehr als 7000 t Feuerfestmaterial benötigt. Zusätzlich wurde die Kühlung des Ofengeräts auf den neuesten Stand gebracht, die Gießhalle renoviert und Winderhitzer, Gasreinigung, Schlackengranulation sowie die Entspannungsturbine wurden repariert. Die Neuzustellung war eine logistische Meisterleistung: Zeitweise arbeiteten parallel 1000 Beschäftigte, sowohl eigene Mitarbeiter als auch Fachleute von Partnerfirmen, auf der Baustelle. Die Ertüchtigung der Anlage war mit einer Investitionssumme von insgesamt rund 200 Mio. verbunden. Nun hat sich der Hochofen 2 auf seine zweite Ofenreise, die Produktionszeit zwischen zwei Modernisierungsphasen, gemacht und erschmilzt bei Temperaturen von mehr als 2000 C Tag für Tag rund t Roheisen. In rund 20 Jahren steht dann wiederum eine Neuzustellung an (Abbildung 4). Mit dem Hochofen in Schwelgern hat auch die ebenfalls für rund 90 Mio. modernisierte Stranggießanlage 1 in Duisburg-Beeckerwerth ihre Erzeugung wieder aufgenommen. Dieses Projekt konnte nur zeitgleich während der Stillstandzeit eines Hochofens umgesetzt werden, da sonst die Produktionsausfälle zu groß wären. (Nach Presse-Information v ) Neues Schmelztauchbad für die Beschichtung extra-großer Automobil- Stahlbleche mit Zink-Magnesium. Tata Steel, zweitgrößter Stahlhersteller in Europa, hat ein neues Schmelztauchbad für die Produktion von MagiZinc eine innovative Zink-Magnesium-Beschichtung (ZnMg) in seine größte Feuerverzinkungsanlage DVL3 integriert (Abbildung 5). Denn MagiZinc Auto steigert die Korrosionsbeständigkeit um das Zwei- bis Vierfache und verringert die Verschmutzung der Pressen durch Zinkabrieb oder -aufschweißung um bis zu 25 %. Alcoa is now selecting fleet partners for the European launch of its lightest forged aluminum wheel ever, the Ultra ONE with MagnaForce alloy. Alcoa has seen significant adoption of the Ultra ONE wheel in other major markets, including the United States, where some of the largest fleets have upgraded to Economics, Technology and Science the Ultra ONE since the March 2014 launch. The wheel has been approved by all major US truck and trailer manufacturers, and is in most manufacturer data books making it available for order by fleets. (MHI), integrierte das weltweit erste ORC-basierte Wärmerückgewinnungssystem in einem Elektrolichtbogenofen (EAF). Die neue ORC-Einheit mit einer elektrischen Ausgangsleistung von 3 MW verwertet einen Teil der Sattdämpfe aus den Abgasen eines Lichtbogenofens bei ESF (Elbe-Stahlwerke Feralpi GmbH), einem der europaweit kompetentesten Eisen- und Stahlproduzenten in Riesa, Deutschland. Das Wärmerückgewinnungssystem wurde im Dezember 2013 in Betrieb genommen. Es ist an das Abgasbehandlungssystem des Lichtbogen- Schmelzofens angeschlossen. Die rückgewonnene Energie reduziert den Stromverbrauch und erlaubt damit eine Reduktion des CO 2 -Ausstoßes. Zusätzlich zur gewonnenen Energie wird der verbleibende Abdampf dem städtischen Dampfversorgungssystem zugeführt und einem lokalen Unternehmen der Reifenproduktion zur Verfügung gestellt. Turboden, ein Pionier auf dem Gebiet der ORC-Technologie, entwickelt und baut Energieerzeugungsanlagen, die den industriellen Energieverbrauch sowie Emissionen durch Wärmerückgewinnung aus ungenutzter Abwärme und Abgasen in Produktionsprozessen und Kraftwerken senken. Die Technologie eignet sich besonders für energieaufwendige Industriezweige wie in der Produktion von Glas, Aluminium, Eisen und Stahl, deren Produktionsprozesse üblicherweise Abgase mit Temperaturen oberhalb von 250 C erzeugen. Seit 2007 hat Turboden 34 Wärmerückgewinnungsanlagen entwickelt und gebaut. Weitere Anlagen befinden sich derzeit im Aufbau. Laut dem Energieeffizienzbericht von 2012, durchgeführt vom Politecnico di Milano zur Untersuchung von Energieeffizienz in industriellen Prozessen, könnten ORC-basierte Wärmerückgewinnungssysteme schätzungsweise 8 Mrd. in die europäischen Kassen spülen und bei einer Energieeinsparung von 2,5 GW CO 2 -Emissionseinsparungen von annähernd 7,5 Mio. t bedeuten.
