Cables with U O /U 0.6/1 kv are also suitable for direct current systems with highest voltages phase/phase or phase/ground 1.8 kv. Guidelines for the current carrying capacity The heat produced by the cable under the given conditions must be able to dissipate to the ambient medium at any point of the cable installation; the loading of the cable must be limited accordingly. Table 2 a The currents in the tables are based of the calculation methods according to IEC 60287 and DIN VDE with regard to the partial drying out of the soil. The values stated for cables laid in the ground are based on standard service conditions so that the current carrying capacities can be taken without derating factor in most cases: (see Table 2 a) load factor 0.7 thermal resistivity of soil 1.0 K m/w (moist area) 2.5 K m/w (dry area) ground temperature 20 C No. of cables/systems 1 laying depth 70 cm Table 2 b distance from the wall, floor or ceiling space between adjacent cables vertical space if the cables being laid on top of each other vertical space between cable systems rise in ambient temperature due to the dissipating heat is taken into consideration or adequte space and ventilation is provided. 2 cm 2 x d 2 x d 30 cm The current values are valid for cables laid direct in ground. Furthermore it is supposed that the soil can dry out in a limited area where the surface of the cable reaches temperatures which lead to drying out of the soil. For installation in air continuous load load factor 1.0 is considered. The values given apply to cabels laid in air at 30 C. It is assumed here that heat dissipation by convection and radiation will not be impeded, and that there are no external heat sources. These conditions can be taken as mentioned in Table 2 b. Grouping of cables, protective coverings, differing ambient temperatures or load factors can considerably influence the load carrying capacity. Group rating factors for cables laid in the ground at a temperature of 20 C are given for a load factor of 0.7 and for a load factor of 1.0 on pages 62 and 63. For other conditions the rating factor should be calculated according to DIN VDE 0276-1000. We shall be pleased to indicate these values on request. For rating factors for cables laid in air see pages 64-67. We also have available calculation methods for the most different working conditions and determine the maximum permissible load currents for that. 11

Applications Short-circuit ratings The short-circuit current can be read for any cable type and conductor size in relation to the disconnection time on the pages 58 and 59. The values have been calculated for shortcircuit conditions based on temperatures given in table 3. The short circuit ratings for the copper screens of XLPE-insulated cables are shown on page 60. Voltage drop In many cases the cross section of low voltage cables must be calculated under consideration of a specified voltage drop. On page 61 the cross section of low voltage cables can be taken depending on the current in the conductor and the length of the cable at a voltage drop of 5 %. Table 3 Insulation Type of cable Perm. cond. temperature Short circuit and nominal before under current density voltage short circuit short circuit for 1 s conditions Cu Al C 1) C A/mm 2 A/mm 2 PVC XLPE single and multicore cables 0.6/1 3.6/6 kv cross section 300 mm 2 70 160 115 76 cross section > 300 mm 2 70 140 103 68 single and multicore cables 90 250 2) 143 94 1) maximum conductor temperatures for loaded cables under normal sevice conditions according to the corresponding DIN VDE standard. 2) for crimped or welded conductor connections. For soldered conductor connections the short circuit temperature must be limited to 160 C. 13

Laying instructions Permissible bending radii When laying power cables, the radii should not be smaller than the values given in table 4. For single bends, e.g. in front of sealing ends, these radii may in the extreme case be reduced by half, if proper handling heating to approx. 30 C, bending over a former is ensured. Cables in ducts The inner diameter of conduits and ducts must be at least 1.5 times of the cable diameter or of the bundle diameter of stranded single-core cables. If cables of an AC or three phase system should laid in a steel pipe than all cables of the system must be laid together in one pipe. When cables are laid in conduits, the current carrying capacity must be reduced by a factor of 0.85 or must be calculated especially in difficulty cases. Permissible pulling forces When laying power cables by machine, particular attention must be paid to the permissible tensile forces. The formulae for obtaining these values are given in table 5. If three single-core cables are laid simultaneously with a common pulling grip the same max. pulling forces as they are applicable for single-core cables, are valid. For 3 laid-up single-core cables the calculation of the permissible pulling forces is based on 3 cables, where as it is based on 2 cables if the 3 single-core cables are not laid-up. S = Total conductor cross-section in mm 2 (without screen and concentric protective conductor) D = Outer diameter of the cable in mm Table 4 Permissible laying temperatures For laying the temperatures of power cables should not fall below: plastic-insulated cable with PVC sheath 05 C XLPE-insulated cable with PE sheath 20 C with H sheath 20 C At lower temperatures the cables must be adequately warmed up in advance. This can be done by storing them in a heated area (approx. 20 C) for several days or by means of special hot air equipment. Service Service concept covering energy cable systems Nexans is offering its customers a modular and customised service agreement for VPE- and paper-insulated energy cable systems. The services encompass the entire lifecycle of cable systems from planning, installation, operation and maintenance through to proper disposal and are available as single modules or as a package. We also offer a rapid response service whereby service customers who experience any faults during normal working hours can ring a special, free hotline to our on-call staff. In this way, for example, and without being diverted via a call centre, network operators can contact experts in energy systems who will offer troubleshooting on the telephone and dispatch experienced personnel with special tools to exactly where they are needed. Optional the service hotline is also available on a 24/7 basis. To ensure the availability of spare parts, Nexans offers a customised warehouse service, whereby essential cable system components are stored on the customer s site, while other parts are available from Nexans on request. This means that Nexans can store rarely needed fittings or cables for a number of service customers at once, which cuts provision costs for all concerned. Service customers also benefit from a range of engineering and planning services, which means that everything from feasibility studies, budgeting, consulting, modification, test and training services right through to complex load flow simulations are all available. this test laboratory. Particularly with regard to the increasing requirements in relation to fire and personnel protection, the following tests, amongst others, can be carried out here: National fire tests DIN EN 50266-2/1-5 International fire tests IEC 60332-1/1-3, IEC 60332-3/22-25 Smoke density testing IEC 61034-1/2 Toxicity DIN EN 50305 Absence of halogen and halogen content DIN EN 50267-2-1, IEC 60754 Accreditation certificate for the Test Laboratory Nuremberg: DAT-PL-289/09-00 Network simulations Within the Nexans Group, there are many years of experience with regard to network simulations and the use of different network simulation programs such as PSS E, INTEGRAL, PowerWorld Simulator, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD and ATP- EMTP. Network planning can thus on the one hand be supported and on the other hand, it is possible to carry out complete network studies for our customers, including the modelling of power supply networks. Both steadystate and transient investigations, such as power flow, short-circuit and stability tests can be performed for our customers. Furthermore, the electromagnetic fields of cables or overhead lines can be analytically determined or calculated with the aid of FEM software. Nexans makes available the appropriate support and expertise to its customers for this purpose. Quality and suitability tests Nexans has in-house test facilities and an institutionally accredited test laboratory in Nuremberg for selected quality and suitability tests. Numerous test certificates can be provided in 53
