As shown in Fokus (a), Kb p102, there are several ways of giving this message: Alles Liebe zum Geburtstag Alles Gute zum Geburtstag Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag are all ways of wishing someone all the best for their birthday. Then, presenting someone with a gift, you would say: Hier ist ein Geschenk für dich or Ich habe eine Überraschung/ein Geschenk für dich. 2.2 Receiving a gift: If you are the lucky recipient of a gift, you would express your pleasure by saying: Cool... Toll... Super... Wahnsinn... Genial... all of which mean Cool...Great...Super... Mad... Fantastic... etc. And politely you would add: Danke! Vielen Dank! Danke schön! Copy these new phrases into your Notebook, still under the same heading as in 2.1. 2.3 Study these expressions and how they are used by listening to Audio CD3 track 31, Fokus a. (Kb p102). This will also give you a list of possible gifts, like CDs, a book, DVDs, etc. Copy this list into your Notebook, with the English meanings beside each word. Don t forget to include the plural forms. 2.4 Write new dialogues following the pattern given and using the four new names and gifts shown in Kb p102 Mach mit! 1 (ii). Talking about birthday gifts 3.1 What did you get? haben + bekommen To ask someone what they got for their birthday and to talk about what was received, we use different forms of haben with bekommen ( have received or more colloquially got ). Look closely at these examples: Ich habe ein Handy bekommen. I received a mobile phone. Was hast du von deiner Familie bekommen? What did you get from your family? Er hat eine Ratte von Julia bekommen. He received (got) a rat from Julia. Julia hat eine Mütze bekommen. Julia got a beanie/cap. Wir haben CDs bekommen. We received CDs. Was habt ihr von Opa bekommen? What did you get from Grandpa? Die Kinder haben ein Computerspiel bekommen. The children received a computer game. Was haben Sie bekommen, Herr Lenz? What did you receive, Herr Lenz? 3.2 haben = to have How well do you know that verb? Complete the following exercise by filling in the correct form of haben. Max eine Gitarre bekommen. 3.3 Forms of ein after the verb There is another point to focus on with these sentences, and that is the form of the word ein when it comes after the verb (when it s the object of the verb). If you look at the examples and exercise from 3.1 and 3.2, you will see different forms of ein have been used, eg. Julia hat eine Mütze bekommen and Ich habe ein Handy bekommen. You might remember that after the verb different forms of certain words are used. (Refer to Kb pp 141-2 if you want to revise this.) The masculine der-words have einen, the feminine die-words have eine and the neuter das-words have ein: eg. Possessive Pronouns: unser (our) and euer (your) 4.1 In the Lesson 3 we looked at how ein changed according to which noun it was with and when it came after the verb. Previously we have studied possessive pronouns like mein, dein, sein, ihr which all took the same endings as ein. If you want to revise this quickly, read Kb p35, pp141-2 and p153b. - 8 -
4.2 This lesson we are adding two more possessives to the list: unser (our) and euer (your). Look firstly at Kb p103 Fokus b. Die Geschenke Audio CD3 track 32. Picture 1: the people are showing what they have, using the subject (or nominative) form of the possessive pronoun. This is the form we use with the verb sein (to be). Here are the sentences, check carefully the spelling of unser (our) and euer (your). der Fußball: die CD: das Buch: die Geschenke: Das ist unser Fußball. Das ist unsere CD. Das ist unser Buch. Das sind unsere Geschenke. Das ist euer Fußball. Das ist eure CD. Das ist euer Buch. Das sind eure Geschenke. So, with der and das words we use unser and euer (Both forms end in -er.) With die words (singular and plural), we use unsere and eure forms end in -e.) 4.4 Back to Kb p103 Fokus b. Die Geschenke: Picture 2: something is happening to those gifts, they now come after the verb and we use the object (or accusative) forms. Here are the sentences from Pic 2, check carefully the spelling of unser (our) and euer (your) when they are with the object of the verb, they come after the verb. der Fußball: Die Ratte frisst unseren Fußball. Ich repariere euren Fußball. die CD: Sie frisst unsere CD. Ich repariere eure CD. das Buch: Sie frisst auch unser Buch. Ich repariere euer Buch. die Geschenke: Die Ratte frisst unsere Geschenke! Ich kann eure Geschenke reparieren! The forms of unser and euer are the same as those above except for the masculine, or der words. They have had the letter n added (when the object of the verb).
