3 InEquality UnGleichheit The Technology Symposium is searching for the causes, future developments and consequences of InEquality. What positive or negative impact does InEquality bring about? How relevant is it? Will new technologies and ways of thinking have a positive impact or a negative one? Can state-of-the-art developments like complexity research or the bio-economy deliver appropriate answers? What role will InEquality play in future industrial and working environments? InEquality will be at the centre of innovative discussions and encounters of science, research, technology, politics and industry. Numerous plenary sessions and fourteen breakout sessions will connect research, innovation and technology in an interdisciplinary dialogue with international experts. Junior Alpbach and Ö1 Children s University will explore new models of science education for future generations. 2

9 Plenary 9:00 10:30 Erwin-Schrödinger-Saal Panel Bioeconomy / Bioökonomie In cooperation with the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. Simultaneous translation. The fact that growth won't last forever and resources are limited has contributed to the disappearance of many advanced civilizations. Global warming and imminent shortages in global food and energy supplies call for better, more sustainable and more balanced economic models. Bioeconomy uses living systems that have evolved over millions of years of evolution. 12 Breakout Sessions Breakout 13:00 18:00 Hauptschule Working Group : The End of Energy Revolution : Das Ende der Energiewende English language When talking about "alternative energy", we always think about the future; the more wetalk, the longer it will take to be put into practice. From a technological point of view, however, we are already in the thick of it: industrial and energy producing corporations are nearing their maximum efficiency levels. Only by linking individual disciplines and by recognising that global conditions differ greatly can regional or national laws on energy and climate policy be usefully and specifically assessed. Helmut Antrekowitsch Professor of Nonferrous Metallurgy and Head, Institute of Nonferrous Metallurgy, Montanuniversität Leoben Angela Köppl Environmental Economist, WIFO Austrian Institute of Economic Research, Vienna Johann Rinnhofer Spokesman of the Board, SMS Elotherm GmbH, Remscheid Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker Honorary Professor, Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg; Co-President, Club of Rome; Freelance Consultant, Emmendingen Volker Zepf Research Fellow, Chair of Resource Strategy, Departement of Physics, Augsburg University, Augsburg Chair Harald Raupenstrauch Professor and Head, Department of Environmental and Energy Process Engineering, Montanuniversität Leoben Coordination Julia Grill Ph.D. Student, Chair of Thermal Processing Technology, Montanuniversität Leoben 11

13 Breakout 13:00 18:00 Hauptschule Working Group 02 Bioeconomy in Action: National Bio-Economy Strategies in Comparison 02 Bioeconomy in Action: Nationale Bioökonomie-Strategien im Vergleich English language The aim is to compare the different national Bioeconomy approaches (Finland, Germany, Italy, South Africa, USA) and to derive viable trajectories for an Austrian Bioeconomy Strategy. Currently, Austria concentrates its activities in the field of research, technology and innovation; for strong political support and social acceptance further steps certainly remain to be taken. Those shall be discussed with international experts and decision-makers lifting the Austrian process to the next level. Martin H. Gerzabek Rector, BOKU University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences; President, BIOS Science Austria, Vienna Sanjay Kumar Director, CSIR - Institute of Himalayan Bioresource Technology, Palampur Jussi Manninen Principal Scientist and Program Manager, Bioeconomy Transformation Program, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland; Secretary, Finnish Bioeconomy Task Force; Espoo Mary E. 14 Breakout 13:00 18:00 Hauptschule Working Group 03 Human Enhancement Technologies: Amplifying or Reducing Inequality? 03 Human Enhancement Technologien: Verstärkung oder Reduktion von Ungleichheit English language Technologies facilitate various forms of enhancement in human characteristics (physical, cognitive, emotional, social). "Ordinary" human capabilities are optimised (e.g. neuro-enhancement, robotics, Google Glass, prostheses). A specific fusion of human and artefact takes place and appropriate technological design is critical.. This breakout session will focus on the limits of enhanced performance,; where do these limits bring more inequality but also a potential for enhancing societal benefit. What fundamental aspects of this development and its design considerations are most important for our future? Robert Hepach Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Department of Developmental and Comparative Psychology, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig Kristina Höök Professor, School of Computer Science and Communication, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm (tbc) Josef Perner Professor of Psychology, Centre for Cognitive Neuroscience, University of Salzburg Friedrich Michael Russold Head, Department of Translational Research, Research and Development, Otto Bock Healthcare Products GmbH, Vienna Boris de Ruyter Principal Scientist, Philips Research Eindhoven; Professor of Human Interaction with Intelligent Systems, Radboud University, Nijmegen Michael Wheeler Professor of Philosophy, Division of Law and Philosophy, University of Stirling Chair Manfred Tscheligi Professor of Human-Computer Interaction, Center for Human-Computer Interaction, Department of Computer Sciences, University of Salzburg; Head, Business Unit Technology Experience, Innovation Systems Department, AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH, Vienna Coordination Verena Fuchsberger Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Center for Human-Computer Interaction, Department of Computer Sciences, University of Salzburg 13

15 Breakout 13:00 18:00 Hauptschule Working Group 04 Research Promotion at the Interfaces of Risk, Creativity and Mainstream 04 Forschungsförderung zwischen Risiko, Kreativität und Mainstream German language Austria's system of research promotion is well established but is it in good shape for the future? Do we promote the right projects and do we promote them well? What are the conflicts that arise between societal benefit and risk acceptance for the state? Is our research system able both to foster exceptional innovation, i.e. creative entrepreneurial approaches and to take the accompanying risk? Ordo risk-minimizing and perfectly styled controlling systems force us to only promote the mainstream? Almost to the point of facilitating the so-called 'free-rider effect'? Hans-Liudger Dienel Executive Director and Scientific Head, Nexus Institute for Cooperation Management and Interdisciplinary Research, Berlin Michael Ploder Head, Research Group Technology, Innovation and Policy Consulting, POLICIES Institute for Economic and Innovation Research, JOANNEUM RESEARCH Forschungsgesellschaft mbh, Graz Klara Sekanina Director of the Secretariat, CTI Commission for Technology and Innovation, Innovation Promotion Agency, Bern Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell Former Member of the Board, ECB European Central Bank, Luxembourg; Consultant, WIFO Austrian Institute of Economic Research, Vienna Thomas Uhr Vice President, BRP-Powertrain; General Manager, BRP-Powertrain GmbH & Co KG, Gunskirchen Chair Klaus Pseiner Managing Director, FFG The Austrian Research Promotion Agency, Vienna Chair Ingolf Schädler Deputy Director General for Innovation Policy, Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, Vienna Coordination Mario Steyer Department III/I 2 Promotion of Research and Technology, Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, Vienna 14

16 Breakout 13:00 18:00 Hauptschule Working Group 05 Market Pheavals: Challenges and Opportunities for Innovation? 05 Marktumbrüche: Herausforderung und Chance für Innovation? German language Changes caused by regulatory interventions, the entry of new competitors, and even product and process innovations jeopardise established business models and force companies to be flexible as never before and to strengthen further their resilience. On top of that, the fusion of industrial production with ICT ("Industry 4.0") opens up new opportunities for targeted customer orientation, efficiency and services. How can established companies reinvent themselves and how can innovative business models reinforce competitiveness? How do dynamic companies succeed in becoming "industry leaders of tomorrow" by using new business models? 18 Breakout 13:00 18:00 Hauptschule Working Group 07 Games of InEquality 07 Spiele der UnGleichheit German language The new EU accounting directive obliges big enterprises to publish their diversity strategies in order to develop a sustainable global economic system, combining long-term profitability with social justice and environmental protection. However, what are the prerequisites for a diversity strategy to achieve in such results? How can we realise the envisaged benefits like "more innovation", "improved market opportunities", or a "better working atmosphere"? And what are the games that we will have to brace ourselves for? In this breakout session we will develop further perspectives on these themes. Introduction Anna Steiger Vice Rector for Human Resources and Gender, Vienna University of Technology, Vienna Alexis Eremia Managing Director, freims: contemporary consulting; Managing Partner, Impact Hub Vienna Evelinde Grassegger Head of Unit, Mobility and Transport Technologies, Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, Vienna Sabine Herlitschka Chief Executive Officer, Infineon Technologies Austria AG, Villach Traude Kogoj Head of Diversity Management, ÖBB Holding AG, Vienna Franziska Nittinger Head of Quality Audit, Vienna University of Technology, Vienna Christiane Seuhs-Schoeller Founder and Head, Center for Integral Leadership, Vienna Coordination Brigitte Ratzer Head, Office for Gender Competence, Vienna University of Technology, Vienna 17
