1 German 305 Spring 2013 Events and Issues in German Media and Popular Culture Time and Location: MWF 9-9:50am; Capers 207 Instructor: Fr. Contact: ; Course Description In this course we will examine media perspectives on German events and issues from the 20 th century to the present day. The Nazi past and the Holocaust, the unification of East and West Germany, multicultural society and human interactions with the environment form focal points of cultural discourse in German Speaking countries today. We will look at how these issues are dealt with in the press, in humorous essays, in music, television and film. All of the primary sources for this course will come from the past decade. The course is taught in German and will practice speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in regular assignments and class discussions. Course goals: Successful participants in the course will: gain a broad understanding of the current cultural and media landscape in German speaking lands. gain a detailed knowledge of specific cultural issues. gain greater fluency in expressing opinions, debating ideas, and posing critical questions in German. Texts and Films Links to diverse texts and videos from internet sources will be distributed. Films will be on reserve at the library and are to be viewed outside of class. Assignments and Expectations Participation Successful language learning depends on active class participation. Class participation includes coming to class prepared (i.e. completing all homework), as well as checking and CitLearn for announcements and assignments. Your class participation grade will reflect your contributions during class (answering questions, being prepared when called on, being a team player in group work, asking questions, and avoiding English) as well your conduct (being present and punctual, staying awake and focused in class, and not leaving the classroom during the 50-minute period.) Attendance Attendance is mandatory. Official Citadel attendance policy will be followed. Students must notify the professor at least 24 hours in advance of any planned absence and submit homework in advance. Students must make an effort to reschedule guard duty when it conflicts with class, and tests shall not be missed due to guard duty (The White Book, p. 86-7). Furthermore, "For any student, absences, whether authorized or unauthorized, in excess of 20% of the meetings of a particular course can, at the discretion of the professor, result in a grade of F in that course" (Blue Book, p. 86). Language Ability Third year courses in German usually contain a mix of students at different stages of their development as German speakers. Successful class discussions will rely on a mutual show of respect, patience and good will. Homework All homework is listed on the Semesterplan below, and is due on the date it is listed. Remember: Your success in foreign language learning depends heavily on the time spent studying and preparing outside of class. No late homework will be accepted, except in extraordinary circumstances and by arrangement with your Professor. (Forgetting, printer problems, guard duty, training exercises, etc, do not qualify as extraordinary circumstances.) When you know you will be absent, homework must be turned in in advance.

2 Assessment 20% Participation: as outlined above. 25% Homework: regular readings and written work 35% Presseclub: following one issue in the media, with bi-weekly summaries and presentations. Presseclub days count as the tests for this course and may not be missed due to guard duty. 20% Final: An essay and presentation on the scheduled exam date (8am on April 25 th ) Cell Phones and Electronic Devices Scale: (%) A= B=89-80 C=79-70 D=69-60 F=59-0 Use of personal electronic devices is not permitted during class. Such devices include cell phones (including camera phones and smart phones), blackberries, pagers, tablet PCs, mobile presenters, wireless tablets, digital recorders, beepers, palms, IPods, MP3 players, texting calculators, digital cameras, and laptops. (This policy does not extend to medically necessary assistive devices and to approved emergency communications). Texting or otherwise working with your electronic devices in class displays not only a visible lack of attention but also a profound lack of respect for your classmates, for your instructor, and for your learning environment. If you are experiencing a situation that requires you to be in constant electronic contact, you should not be in the classroom. Violating this policy affects your participation grade. Course Policy on Translations, Plagiarism and Extra Help: Translation Programs Use of online translators, translation software, etc. is cheating and will not be tolerated. Tutoring and extra help Professors Emm, Frenzel and Skow are available to help. You are also encouraged to seek out the German tutor at the Academic Support Center. Consult with your professor before receiving help from anyone else. Cheating/Plagiarism All work submitted must be your own. Use of online translation programs is cheating.
