5 History of Industrial Ecology illustrated as a development along three steps. Step1: Smart idea (1989) Step 2: Fuzzy concept (early 1990s) Step 3: Powerful prism (late 1990s) 5

6 Step 1: The inception of Industrial Ecology goes back to a seminal article published by Frosch and Gallopoulos in (Step 1) Smart idea : Robert Frosch and Nicholas Gallopoulos published a paper Strategies for Manufacturing in Scientific American in Need for a cyclical industrial ecosystem Optimized use of energies and materials Minimized wastes and pollution Every product of a manufacturing process should have an economically viable role.

7 The initial efforts in the early 1990s are being rather a patchwork than building a solid body of theory. (Step 2) Fuzzy concept in the early 1990s: The seminal article by Frosch and Gallopoulos was the catalyst for a Symposium held by the US National Academy of Sciences. The concept envisioned a more integrated model of industrial activity that would be environmentally sustainable on a global level. The focus is - to understand how the industrial system works, - how it is regulated, and its interaction with the biosphere; - then, on the basis of what we know about ecosystems, to determine how it could be restructured to make it compatible with the way natural ecosystems function. 7

8 Step 3: Today, Industrial Ecology has moved to a promising field of research striving for sustainability. (Step 3): powerful prism in the late 1990s: The focus of the field is to examine the impact of industry and technology on nature. IE examines local, regional and global uses and flows of materials and energy in products, processes, industrial sectors and economies and it focuses on the potential role of industry in reducing environmental burdens throughout the product life cycle. 8 IE includes a number of research areas: - material and energy flow studies (MFA, industrial metabolism ) - life-cycle analysis (LCA) - design for the environment ( eco-design ) - extended producer responsibility ( product stewardship ) - eco-industrial parks ( industrial symbiosis ).

9 The ISIE formally opened its doors to membership in Mission of ISIE: Promote the use of Industrial Ecology in research, education, policy, community development, and industrial practices. 9
