Welcome to our Professional Development Program for summer term As doctoral candidate or postdoc of one of our member programs you gain access to our workshops according to your program regulations. If you are a doctoral candidate or postdoc of Freie Universität, or any other university, but not member of Dahlem Research School, you are also very welcome to register. Whether you choose to take part in one of our transferable skills trainings, our career development workshops, or any other of our offerings, the Professional Development Program is designed to support you in any aspect of your career that goes beyond the core activities of your individual research areas. Our program will provide you with the tools necessary to succeed in your dissertation project, to enhance key competencies and maximize your potential, to prepare for a career in industry, academia or the public sector. Dahlem Research School encompasses 27 outstanding structured doctoral programs at Freie Universität Berlin. With currently about 900 doctoral candidates, a third of whom come from abroad, DRS fosters transdisciplinary research in an international context. This gives you the chance to get to know your peers from different disciplines. We strongly encourage you to take advantage of these opportunities to expand your horizons! 6 Conditions of Participation 1. Who Can Participate in the DRS Professional Development Program? The Professional Development Program is open to the following target groups. Available spaces are first given to members of priority group 1 and then to those of priority group 2 and 3: Priority group 1 Doctoral candidates and postdocs of DRS doctoral programs Postdocs of the DRS fellowship lines HONORS, POINT and COFUND. Priority group 2 Doctoral candidates and postdocs of Freie Universität who are not members of DRS doctoral programs Priority group 3 Doctoral candidates and postdocs of other universities 2. How Do I Find Suitable Courses? Each course description provides information about the targeted subject area, skill level and the format of the course. Use these indicators to find courses that are appropriate for your educational objectives and developmental needs. 1. Course Is Related To Your Subject Area: Please note that some workshops are specifically designed for participants of certain subject areas, e.g. the natural and life sciences. 2. Course Format Meets Your Needs: The majority of our workshops are trainings. For some topics you can avail yourself of additional coaching sessions and open door talks. 3. Course Matches Your Skill Level: Does the course advance your level of skill and meet your particular professional needs? For each course you will see a scale with four circles, symbolizing from left to right the 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of the doctorate. Courses for postdocs are marked by the fourth circle. From the following examples you can see which courses target which levels: 6

How Do I Register for Courses? Registration opens online approximately three weeks before the semester begins. In order to register for a course, please click on the course link and complete the online registration form, which you will find at the bottom of the course page. You will receive an confirmation once your booking is processed. If the course is full, your name will be added to the waiting list and you will be notified via as soon as a place becomes available. If you belong to priority groups 2 or 3, you may be placed on the waiting list until registrations from members of priority group 1 have been processed. cancellation policy 1. If you are unable to attend a course you have booked, you must request withdrawal at the latest 21 days prior to the course via to 2. For cancellations we receive later than 21 days before the beginning of the course, you/your doctoral program will be charged with 100% of the course fee. The number of course days you are entitled to book by your program will be reduced accordingly. 3. For cancellations received at the latest 21 days before the beginning of the course, you/your doctoral program will not be charged. The number of course days that you are entitled to book by your program will not be reduced or your course fee will be refunded. 4. Cancellations due to illness are only acceptable on production of a valid medical certificate which you must send by mail or within one week after the course. In this case you/your doctoral program will not be charged. The number of course days that you are entitled to book will not be reduced or your course fee will be refunded. 7

8 4. Do I have to Pay for a Course? Our Professional Development Program consists of high-quality courses taught by expert trainers and coaches. The Dahlem Research School therefore asks for a contribution of 100 per participant per course day. For members of priority group 1 the DRS doctoral programs of Freie Universität Berlin often cover this contribution. If there is no funding available, you have to pay for your courses yourself. In this case, we can only accept your registration if we receive full payment before the start of the course via bank transfer. You will be first put on the waiting list and asked to transfer the course fee. You will receive the confirmation for participation after we have received your payment. Please Note! Ask your doctoral program, your department or your supervisor if there is funding available for your course participation. 5. How Many Courses Can I Register for? If there is funding available for you, the number of courses you can register for may be limited by your doctoral program. Please contact your program coordinator to find out how many course days you are entitled to book, before you register online. If you want to exceed the designated number of course days, you can ask your program for further financing or pay the fee yourself. If there is no funding available for you, you may also register for courses, but you will have to pay the course fee yourself. There is no limit to the number of courses you may register for. 8

9 6. DRS Doctoral Candidates: How Will My Attendance be Accredited? Dahlem Research School offers and administers its interdisciplinary course program but does NOT award credits for the courses. Each doctoral program has its own rules on awarding ECTS credits for courses taken at DRS. Individual training records are made available by Dahlem Research School to each program coordinator at the end of each semester. After you have completed your doctoral studies your program coordinator will issue to you a transcript of records including all courses taken as part of the curriculum of your doctoral program. Please note that you will not receive a separate certificate for each course. 7. What Happens to My Data? Participants' data is stored in a database at Dahlem Research School (DRS) for the purpose of recording attendance at workshops, providing statistical information and maintaining training records. At regular intervals, individual training records are made available to the institution which is funding your place in the course program. This is your doctoral program, and in some cases your department ("Fachbereich"). Non-personal data is used as the basis for our internal quality management and control. It is our goal to continuously improve and develop our services. 9

13 professional development program Supporting Individual Career Paths Knowledge and competence in your field of research are vital foundations for a successful doctorate. Equally important is a range of key competencies that are crucial not only for your academic development, but also in other professional contexts: Communicating adequately in different settings, organizing yourself and your work and mastering IT are examples of this. The fact that only a maximum of 1 out of 10 doctoral researchers continue their career in academia highlights the need for a varied skill set even more. The Professional Development Program at Dahlem Research School takes this into account and helps you to prepare for different career paths. On the basis of the principles of research integrity, the workshops hone your reading, writing and teaching skills and support you in publishing and presenting your research and defending your dissertation. 13

14 Transferable Skills Management Competencies Career Development Management Competency courses give you the opportunity to acquire and improve additional skills that complement your academic performance and prepare you to take on responsible positions in your future career. You will find workshops focusing on a range of IT tools, support for motivating and organizing yourself, as well as strategies for improving your networking skills. Each career requires individual planning. Our program provides you with courses that support you along the way, from exploring your options and choosing a career path to applying for jobs. Other offerings give you a chance to gain new perspectives by, e.g. getting acquainted with the basics of economics. training coaching Mentoring Within our Professional Development Program you can choose between different educational formats depending on your needs and career goals. Training Coaching Mentoring Training sessions constitute the major part of our program. In one to two-day highly interactive workshops our experienced trainers instruct you in achieving expertise and mastering new skills in various fields, for instance about the best way to present yourself and your research results, teach at university level or organize your time. Coaching in small groups aims at developing your awareness and the power to reflect on your existing skills and knowledge and helping you to find the best way to enhance your performance. Our qualified coaches guide you in finding, trying and evaluating effective motivation strategies for completing your doctoral studies or in determining your professional potential in order to devise a suitable career strategy. Mentoring aims to support female doctoral candidates in exploring and pursuing their career options. It brings them together with experienced professional mentors who offer guidance, encouragement and support. Mentors and mentees meet regularly throughout a one-year program and participate in specially designed workshops, coachings and networking events. 14

15 open door Talks Open Door Talks is a lecture series addressing all students, doctoral candidates and postdocs. Experts from different occupational fields share their individual experiences and discuss with you how to make the right career move. Other Open Door Talks deal with funding opportunities for research stays abroad or postdoctoral projects. Quality assurance Our mission is to constantly improve our Professional Development Program and to enhance the quality of our doctoral candidates' learning and development. Trainers and coaches are recruited and selected on the basis of their professional experience and outstanding qualifications. The course program is regularly reviewed and revised to meet the current needs and profiles of the course participants. Course assessment ensures the evaluator s anonymity. The results of course assessments are compared to those of other workshops from the same semester and analyzed with the trainers in a positive assessment climate, ensuring that feedback from the participants leads to concrete improvements. 18 research integrity Supporting Good Scientific Practice Berlin-Brandenburg Cooperation One of the core responsibilities of Dahlem Research School is to promote research integrity as the basis of all academic work. From the very beginning of your doctorate we support you in obtaining strategies and gaining confidence in conducting and presenting your research according to the standards of good scientific practice. Since winter term 2014/15, we are closely cooperating with Humboldt Graduate School (HGS), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Potsdam Graduate School (PoGS), Universität Potsdam. This cooperation allows us to expand and vary our offers and tailor them to specific disciplines. WHAT IS GOOD SCIENTIFIC PRACTICE? It is about the way in which research is planned and conducted, the results are recorded and reported, and the fruits of research are disseminated, applied and exploited. It allows ready verifications of the quality and integrity of data, transparent basis for the investigation of allegations. The two-hour introductory course provides an overview of the range of areas in which young scientists can come into contact with the subject. The goal should be to develop a sense of what "Good Scientific Practice" is. Welcome! All doctoral candidates and postdocs are very welcome! Prior registration is not required. 18

However, data protection laws apply and personal rights need to be respected. We make scientists aware of potential problems when exchanging scientific data. Ausgehend von einer Nominaldefinition wollen wir in diesem Workshop zügig zur Anwendung voranschreiten. Was genau bedeutet zum Beispiel das Urheberrecht für meine Forschungsarbeit? Was bedeutet es für die neuen und alten Publikationsformen, für die Vergabe von Nutzungsrechten und für die Frage, wer als Mitautor eines Textes gelten darf? Am zweiten Workshoptag konzentrieren wir uns auf die Nutzung von Quellen für unseren eigenen Text, schreiben Paraphrasen von fremden Texten, werten einige Plagiatsfälle aus und diskutieren über Sinn und Unsinn von Plagiatssoftware. Wilkins Date Mo./Tue. 06/07 July 2015, 9:00-17:00 (Tag 1), 9:00-13:00 (Tag 2) Venue Dahlem Research School, Hittorfstraße 16 Objectives Content Methods To help the students develop a good sense of judgment about conducting their scientific work, with both high professional and ethical standards. The first part will involve instruction on matters of procedure in doing and recording scientific work, to ensure that the work is reliable. The second part will deal with all sorts of situations that raise ethical issues in the doing and publication of scientific work. There will be two short lectures, with Power Point presentations and some assigned reading (before the workshop starts and during it), but the main mode of teaching will involve discussion of issues, both between pairs of students and by the group as a whole. Preparation The preparation will involve reading one assigned article in advance and bringing two problems or situations to discuss, one bearing on scientific procedure, the other on ethics. 22

Juli 2015, 9:00-17:00 Ort Dahlem Research School, Hittorfstraße 16 Ziele Inhalte Basierend auf der DFG-Denkschrift Sicherung guter wissenschaftlicher Praxis erwerben die Teilnehmenden umfassende Kenntnisse über die Regeln guter wissenschaftlicher Praxis sowie über den Umgang mit wissenschaftlichem Fehlverhalten. Sie werden für eventuell auftretende Konfliktbereiche sensibilisiert und erwerben Kompetenzen, um im Forschungsalltag angemessene Entscheidungen dazu treffen zu können. Im Workshop wird spezifisch forschungsethisches Fachwissen vermittelt und es werden Fertigkeiten im Umgang mit möglichen Konfliktsituationen in der Forschungspraxis eingeübt. Es wird den Teilnehmenden Raum für Reflexion ihrer Werte und ihrer Haltung als WissenschaftlerInnen gegeben und es können Fragen und Unklarheiten aus den jeweiligen Tätigkeitsbereichen besprochen werden.
