It is also the continuation of German 102. If you have gained sufficient German skills before coming to WKU you need to take the placement exam. Please see me for details. You may want to try earning credit by taking the CLEP Test(See departmental policy sheet on placement/credit for more information). Program goals: Through course work, experience abroad, and other cultural encounters, the Modern Languages Program cultivates communicative skills and cultural awareness that prepare students at Western Kentucky University to be more knowledgeable and sensitive citizens of the global community. Learning Outcomes: German 201 continues development of the four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) in a cultural context with a focus on spoken German which will lead you into an Intermediate Level of proficiency in those skill areas. You will also learn: -- to communicate in German about daily life and the world around you -- to talk about and describe past events, location of items, and give/understand directions -- to read texts in German about a variety of topics -- to know more about the peoples and cultures of the German-speaking nations Texts: Schritte Plus 3, Hilpert, Niebisch, et. al., Hueber Verlag, Schritte Plus 3 Glossar, Hueber Verlag Small to mid-size German-English / English-German dictionary (recommended) blue booklets for journal entries (can be purchased at a WKU bookstore for 25 cents) Need at least 2. Class format: Class time is spent in oral activities such as discussion, exercises (groups, pairs, all-class). Therefore, be prepared to speak and participate in all class activities. Effort and performance both play a role. Therefore, if you are unprepared for class or are not using as much German as possible, or do not have your book in class, your participation grade will go down. If you are late to class or sleep during class, your participation grade will go down. There will also be the explanation of new or practice of the old grammar structures. Preparation and active participation in class are important components of this course because they will help you improve the four skills and prepare you to do well on assessments. Regular assignments help you practice the material we are learning. Write out all assigned exercises. DO NOT hand in only true/false answers or empty blanks. WRITE out complete sentences! Make time to study your German every day. Grading: Grading scale: Quiz 10 % 100% - 98% = A+ 97% - 93% = A 92% - 90% = A- Tagebücher 20 % 89% - 88% = B+ 87% - 83% = B 82% - 80% = B- Hausaufgaben 20 % 79% - 78% = C+ 77% - 73% = C 72% - 70% = C- Prüfungen 40 % 69% - 68% = D+ 67% - 63% = D 62% - 60% = D- TOTAL 100% Below 60% = F Tutoring: Tutoring is available through the Modern Languages Dept. (the schedule is available in the classroom) or The Learning Center (TLC) (located in DSU (DUC) ) and is FREE. Please call TLC in at (270) for more information or to schedule a tutoring appointment. Don t forget that you can also come and see me for extra help as well during my office hours, or ask if I am free at other times.

2 Course policies: University-established policies on attendance and on academic integrity apply: (1) registration obligates the student to regular, punctual attendance and (2) students shall not represent work taken from another source as their own (pp. 28 and 256 of the University Bulletin). Cheating is UNACCEPTABLE and you will receive an F. The use of Google translate (or any other online translation) will be considered cheating. DO NOT use them. You will not receive credit for that work. Frequent absences will reflect in your daily grade and are likely to reduce your chances of performing well on tests. Attendance is mandatory. If you will miss class, please notify me. Students are responsible to check and Blackboard every day, even when class is missed or canceled for any reason. You are expected to attend every class, more than THREE absences (EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED) WILL result in the drop in your grade as follows: This policy will be strictly enforced! four (total) absences = drop half letter grade five (total) absences = drop letter grade six (total) absences = drop 1.5 letter grades seven (total) absences = drop 2 letter grades, etc. Vacation accommodations will NOT be made, therefore plan your time wisely. Exams and Quizzes may not be made up, and the student will receive a ZERO. EVERY student must complete the scheduled oral exam at the end of the course as well as the scheduled exam during finals week, or the student will receive an F for the course grade. Assignments must be handed in during the class meeting, if you expect to receive full credit. For each day an assignment is late, its value will decrease by 50%. All students are expected to help maintain a courteous and respectful learning environment. PLEASE DO NOT EAT in class, since it is disruptive to the class and will impact your ability to participate properly, and you will be counted as absent for doing so. If you are a part of active military service or WKU athletics I must know about your absence PRIOR (at least two days) to your missing class. All work due on those missed days must be completed BEFORE the absence. Tagebücher: You will write each Tagebuch (journal) in a blue book purchased from the bookstore. Each Tagebuch has two parts. There is an original and a rewrite for every journal entry. You MUST do both parts to receive a grade, otherwise the grade will be a ZERO! If you hand in a Tagebuch after the due date, the grade will go down a whole letter grade for each day it is late. Laptop/Tablet Policy: You are welcome to use this tech during class, but you must be using it for GERMAN class related activities. For ANY other use (i.e. Facebook, , other classwork etc.) during classtime, you will be asked to leave class, receive a 0 participation grade for the day, and may not bring any laptop/tablet back to class. Cellphone/Texting Policy: Unless previous arrangements are made before class, please have all cellphones OFF and put away during class. DO NOT have the cellphone on your lap, text from your pocket, on your desk or in view, otherwise you will be asked to leave the room and you will receive a ZERO participation grade for that day. All devices must be turned off before exams and quizzes, otherwise you will receive a ZERO for that work. Schleuderball!: If you are interested in playing or just want to experience this unique German sport, please see me for more details. We generally play on Saturday afternoons during the semester until mid-october. German Filmfest: A special 4 day event of German films. From October at 7:00pm in Cherry Hall 210. Every German 201 student must attend TWO of these 4 films.
