1 German 302: Advanced Composition University of Alaska Fairbanks Bunnell 313, MWF, 2:15-3:15 Instructor: Dr. Robert Blankenship Office: Gruening 609A, Office Hours: MTWR: 3:45-4:45 Telephone: Course Description: This is an advanced writing course that is designed to familiarize students with various categories of writing in German. What to say and how to say it generally dictate stylistic elements such as vocabulary, sentence structure, the use of metaphor, and other rhetorical devices. Your writing assignments will encompass a wide variety of topics, with literary analysis being just one of them. While writing is the primary focus of the course, we will also construct a broad overview of German cultural and literary history. The course is conducted in German.

2 Course Goals and Student Learning Outcomes: - Students will improve their writing skills in German. - Students will acquire grammar relevant to academic writing. - Students will acquire a broad overview of German cultural and literary history. They will also contemplate the difference between German Studies and Germanistik - At the end of this course, students should have the basic tools for exploring and writing about German culture and literature in German. Required Texts: Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik. Rankin and Wells. Fifth Edition. We will be reading many texts in German, most of which are freely available on the internet. For the other texts, we will make arrangements during the course of the semester. Assessment: Portfolio: 40% First Drafts: 20% Grammar Homework: 15% Oral Presentations: 15% Participation: 10% Portfolio: The portfolio should contain pages of writing that you have revised through multiple drafts over the course of the semester and are proud of. First Drafts: The first drafts include both the 200-word essays and five-page papers (the ones listed in the course schedule as paper due.) The five-page papers should be about topics discussed in the course. You should bring the draft to class on the day it is due and prepare to workshop it in class. Although first drafts are never perfect, you should nonetheless put forth your best effort with the first draft. Grammar Homework: The grammar homework is from the book Handbuch zur deutschen Grammatik. The homework is listed on the course schedule. Oral Presentations: Each of you will give two oral presentations on topics listed in the course schedule. Each presentation should last approximately twenty minutes. Participation: Participation is absolutely essential for this course. Students will be graded on their efforts, preparation, and enthusiasm. Absences and tardiness may have a strong negative effect on participation grades. In order to earn full points for participation, students must always attend class, arrive on time, be prepared, work hard, and be enthusiastic and curious. Classroom Etiquette: - No pagers, cell phones, or computers in class, unless they are used for specific in-class activities. - Practice civility and respect for others in the classroom.

3 Honor Code Exercise high ethical standards. High ethical standards are expected in this class. The standards in this class adhere to the UAF Honor Code: 1. Students will not collaborate on any quizzes, in-class exams, or take-home exams that will contribute to their grade in a course, unless permission is granted by the instructor of the course. Only those materials permitted by the instructor may be used to assist in quizzes and examinations. 2. Students will not represent the work of others as their own. A student will attribute the source of information not original with himself or herself (direct quotes or paraphrases) in compositions, theses and other reports. 3. No work submitted for one course may be submitted for credit in another course without the explicit approval of both instructors. Violations of the Honor Code will result in a failing grade for the assignment and, ordinarily, for the course in which the violation occurred.
