1 Moravian College Foreign Language Department Introductory German II(Germ 105) Fall 2010 Instructor: Martina Buckley Office Hour: Wednesdays, 10:15-11:15am or by appointment Office Location: Comenius C 409 Telephone: FL Department : (610) tbuckley@moravian.edu Class Meeting Schedule: MWF 8:55 10:05am PPH (South Campus) HILL # 209 Course Description: Continuing of German 100, introduction and practice of elements of language structures in the classroom through oral and written exercises as well as class participation and homework assignments. Reading, writing, listening and speaking the language will be taught and practiced throughout the course. Prerequisite: passing grade in German 100 or placement through the Foreign Language Department. Objectives: Designed to develop novice-mid to novice-high proficiency in the German language as it is spoken and written today. Students will have the opportunity to communicate in concrete situations, engage in basic conversations, master the basic features of the sound and writing systems and utilize a basic vocabulary. This course will also cover an introduction to contemporary life and culture in the German speaking countries. Quizzes and Projekt 40 % Final Exam 20 % Total 100 %

2 Grammar/ Quizzes Vocabulary to be tested includes all assigned word lists from Neue Horizonte, as well as word lists provided by the instructor. Students will be required to use vocabulary in context on the quizzes rather than to translate or define words. Grammar to be tested includes all explanations found in Neue Horizonte Textbook and Workbook and worksheets. Like vocabulary, grammar will also be tested for use in context. Homework Homework assignments are due at the beginning of the following class period. If you miss class (which you are highly discouraged from doing), it is your responsibility to obtain the homework assignment from the instructor ( ), or from a classmate and hand it in on your next class visit. At the conclusion of each chapter you are expected to hand in the completed workbook pages ( SAM ) for that chapter on the next class day. Class attendance and participation Language-learning requires active class participation at all times! More than two unexcused absences will result in a lowering of your semester grade. Please notify me ahead of time if you know that you have to miss class or me if you missed a class. Plagiarism and cheating will be handled according to the Student Code outlined in the current Student Handbook and in the statement on Academic Honesty at Moravian College.
