3 Informationen zu SNB-Statistiken Dezember 007 Entwicklung der Direktinvestitionen 006 Die Direktinvestitionen im Ausland (Kapitalexporte) stiegen von 64 Mrd. auf 88 Mrd. Franken. Sie übertrafen damit den bisherigen Spitzenwert von 75 Mrd. Franken aus dem Jahr 000 deutlich. Besonders kräftig nahmen aufgrund des starken Wachstums der Weltwirtschaft und der hohen Liquidität der Unternehmen die Akquisitionen zu: sie stiegen von Mrd. auf 55 Mrd. Franken. Wie üblich ging der grösste Teil der Kapitalexporte nach Europa und in die USA. Die hohen Kapitalexporte liessen auch den Bestand an Direktinvestitionen im Ausland markant steigen, um 69 Mrd. auf 63 Mrd. Franken. Die Erträge auf Direktinvestitionen im Ausland gingen von 77 Mrd. auf 69 Mrd. Franken zurück. Dieser Rückgang war auf tiefere Erträge der in der Schweiz ansässigen, ausländisch beherrschten Finanz- und Holdinggesellschaften zurückzuführen. Die anderen Branchen erzielten auf ihren Direktinvestitionen im Ausland höhere Erträge als im Vorjahr. Die schweizerischen Unternehmen erhöhten den Personalbestand in Tochterunternehmen im Ausland um 0, Mio. auf, Mio. Personen. Im Bericht wird erstmals gezeigt, wie sich im Vergleich dazu der Personalbestand dieser Unternehmen im Inland entwickelte. Die schweizerischen Unternehmen sind im Vergleich mit Unternehmen aus anderen Ländern überdurchschnittlich stark im Ausland vertreten. Das Verhältnis zwischen dem Bestand der schweizerischen Direktinvestitionen im Ausland und dem nominellen Bruttoinlandprodukt (BIP) lag bei 30%. In Ländern, die mit der Schweiz vergleichbar sind, erreichte dieses Verhältnis nicht annähernd den schweizerischen Wert. In den Niederlanden betrug es 99% und in Irland 57%. Die ausländischen Direktinvestitionen in der Schweiz (Kapitalimporte) beliefen sich auf 33 Mrd. Franken. Dies war deutlich mehr als in den beiden Vorjahren, als sie durch hohe Kapitalrückzüge aus Finanz- und Holdinggesellschaften massiv nach unten gedrückt worden waren. 006 flossen den Finanzund Holdinggesellschaften mit 3 Mrd. Franken wieder umfangreiche Mittel zu. Ebenfalls 3 Mrd. Franken gingen in die Versicherungsbranche, was hauptsächlich auf die Übernahme einer grossen Versicherung durch ausländische Investoren zurückzuführen war. Der ausländische Kapitalbestand in der Schweiz erhöhte sich um 4 Mrd. auf 66 Mrd. Franken, in erster Linie bedingt durch die hohen Kapitalzuflüsse. Gemessen am Herkunftsland des unmittelbaren Investors nahm vor allem der Kapitalbestand der EU (EU5) zu. Er stieg um 37 Mrd. auf 93 Mrd. Franken. Der Kapitalbestand in unmittelbar von US-Investoren gehaltenen Unternehmen stieg um 3 Mrd. auf 6 Mrd. Franken. Die alternative Gliederung nach dem Herkunftsland des letztlich berechtigten Investors zeigt ein leicht anderes Bild: demzufolge stieg der Kapitalbestand der Investoren aus der EU nur um 5 Mrd. auf 4 Mrd. Franken, der Kapitalbestand der Investoren aus den USA hingegen um Mrd. auf 93 Mrd. Franken. Auf die Unterschiede der beiden geographischen Gliederungen wird im Bericht zur Entwicklung der Direktinvestitionen 006 eingegangen. Die Erträge aus Direktinvestitionen in der Schweiz nahmen insgesamt aufgrund tieferer Erträge der Finanz- und Holdinggesellschaften von 36 Mrd. auf 9 Mrd. Franken ab. In den anderen Branchen verdienten die ausländischen Investoren mehr als im Vorjahr. Der Personalbestand in ausländischen Unternehmen in der Schweiz stieg um auf Auslandvermögen der Schweiz 006 Die Auslandaktiven und die Auslandpassiven nahmen 006 je um rund 50 Mrd. Franken zu und erreichten 305 Mrd. resp. 449 Mrd. Franken. Das Nettovermögen war mit 567 Mrd. Franken praktisch gleich hoch wie im Vorjahr. Drei Faktoren prägten die Entwicklung des Nettovermögens: der Kapitalverkehr (hohe Kapitalexporte und -importe), der Wertverlust des US-Dollars sowie die Kursgewinne auf den Aktien. Die Kapitalexporte übertrafen die Kapitalimporte um 88 Mrd. Franken. Der Wertverlust des US-Dollars beeinflusste in erster Linie die Auslandaktiven, die zu einem Drittel auf US-Dollar lauteten. Der US-Dollar Anteil bei den Auslandpassiven betrug lediglich 0%. Dagegen wirkten sich die Kursgewinne auf Aktien stärker auf die Auslandpassiven aus als auf die Auslandaktiven: ausländische Investoren hielten knapp einen Drittel ihres Vermögens in der Schweiz in Aktien, während Aktien nur 0% der Auslandaktiven schweizerischer Investoren ausmachten. Damit führten die Bewertungsänderungen bei den Aktien und den Fremdwährungspositionen per Saldo zu einem Rückgang des Nettovermögens. Auch in den vergangenen Jahren hatten sich die Bewertungsänderungen negativ auf das Nettovermögen ausgewirkt. Trotz beträchtlichen Nettokapitalexporten hat sich daher das Nettovermögen seit 00 nur geringfügig erhöht. Der Bericht zum Auslandvermögen 006 geht näher auf die Rolle der Wechsel- und Börsenkurse bei dieser Entwicklung ein. Erstmals werden im Bericht zum Auslandvermögen 006 Anlagen in strukturierte Produkte sowie die positiven resp. negativen Wiederbeschaffungswerte der Derivate ausgewiesen. Bei den Auslandaktiven belief sich der entsprechende Bestand auf 4 Mrd. Franken (+34 Mrd. Franken), bei den Auslandpassiven auf 7 Mrd. Franken (+ Mrd. Franken). Die Berichte zur Entwicklung der Direktinvestitionen 006 und zum Auslandvermögen der Schweiz 006 werden ab Ende Dezember im Internet verfügbar sein. 4 Information on SNB statistics December 007 Development of direct investment in 006 Direct investment abroad (capital outflows) soared from CHF 64 billion to CHF 88 billion, thereby clearly exceeding the previous record of CHF 75 billion in 000. Acquisitions rose especially rapidly, from CHF billion to CHF 55 billion, due to strong growth in the international economy and the high level of liquid funds held by companies. As usual, the largest capital outflows were directed towards Europe and the US. The strong capital outflows resulted in a substantial increase in the stock of outward foreign direct investment, which rose by CHF 69 billion to CHF 63 billion. Income from direct investment abroad decreased from CHF 77 billion to CHF 69 billion. This decline was attributable to a drop in incomes generated by foreign-controlled finance and holding companies domiciled in Switzerland. The other categories achieved higher income on their direct investment abroad than in 005. Swiss companies increased the number of staff employed in their subsidiaries abroad by 0. million, taking the level of staff abroad to. million individuals. The report shows, for the first time, how staff numbers at these companies have developed within Switzerland. By comparison with other countries, the operations of Swiss companies abroad are particularly extensive. The stock of Swiss direct investment abroad amounted to 30% of nominal gross domestic product (GDP). In countries comparable with Switzerland, this ratio is nowhere near the Swiss figure. In the Netherlands it amounted to 99% and in Ireland it was 57%. Foreign direct investment in Switzerland (capital inflows) amounted to CHF 33 billion, considerably higher than in the two previous years, when significant repatriation of capital out of financial and holding companies had led to a radical cutback in the figure. In 006, financial and holding companies once again experienced substantial inflows, amounting to CHF 3 billion. A similar amount CHF 3 billion flowed into the insurance industry. This was mainly attributable to the acquisition of a large insurance company by foreign investors. The stock of foreign capital investment in Switzerland rose by CHF 4 billion to CHF 66 billion, first and foremost as a result of the high capital inflows. In terms of the country of the immediate investor, it was the capital stock of the EU (EU5) that advanced, climbing from CHF 37 billion to CHF 93 billion. The capital stock in terms of companies in the immediate possession of US investors rose by CHF 3 billion to CHF 6 billion. The alternative breakdown by country of origin of the ultimate beneficial investor reveals a slightly different picture. According to this calculation, the capital stock of investors from the EU increased by only CHF 5 billion to CHF 4 billion, while the capital stock of investors from the US was up by CHF billion to CHF 93 billion. The differences between the two different geographical types of breakdown are discussed in the 006 report on the developments of direct investment. Overall, income from direct investment in Switzerland fell from CHF 36 billion to CHF 9 billion due to lower incomes earned by finance and holding companies. In the other industries, foreign investors earned more than in 005. The number of staff employed by foreign companies in Switzerland rose by 7,000 to 35,000. Switzerland s international investment position in 006 In 006, foreign assets and foreign liabilities increased by approximately CHF 50 billion each, reaching CHF 3,05 billion and CHF,449 billion. At CHF 567 billion, the net investment position was at almost the same level as in the previous year. Movements in the net investment position were dominated by three factors: the financial account (high level of capital outflows and inflows), loss in value of the US dollar and price gains on shares. Capital outflows exceeded capital inflows by CHF 88 billion. The weaker dollar mainly affected foreign assets, one-third of which were denominated in US dollars. The US dollar accounted for only 0% of the foreign liabilities. By contrast, price gains on shares had a stronger impact on foreign liabilities than on foreign assets: While foreign investors in Switzerland held just under one-third of their assets in shares, a mere 0% of Swiss investors foreign assets were held in shares. Consequently, on balance, valuation changes in shares and foreign currency items led to a decline in the net investment position. Valuation changes have also had a negative effect on the net investment positions in previous years. Consequently, in spite of considerable net capital outflows, the net investment position has only seen a minimal rise since 00. The 006 report on international investment provides more detailed information on the role of exchange rates and share prices in this development. Investment in structured products as well as the positive and negative replacement values of derivatives are included in the publication for the first time. In the case of foreign assets, these holdings amounted to CHF 4 billion (CHF +34 billion), while the share of foreign liabilities was CHF 7 billion (CHF + billion). The reports on the development of direct investment in 006 and Switzerland's international investment position in 006 will be available on the SNB website from the end of December.
