6 Kurse zum MBA Der MBA setzt sich aus einer Einführung, zehn Modulen, Prüfungen (Hausarbeit, Präsentation, Klausur oder Projekt) sowie einer Abschlussarbeit zusammen. Das Studium ist modular aufgebaut. Insgesamt sind folgende Module zu absolvieren: 7 Core Modules: Managing Human Resources, Marketing Management, Operations Strategies, Financial Management, Action Consultancy and Business Simulation, Strategic Management in a Global Context, Management Research and Dissertation plus 3 core elective modules from a choice of 6: Project Management, Entrepreneurship, Financial Strategy, Sustainability Management Strategies Strategic Change Management, Employment and Labour Law und die MBA Dissertation als Examensarbeit Ihres MBA - Studiums. Bei Programmbeginn war Olaf Erz technischer Berater eines Forschungsinstituts in Uganda. 7 Studienverlauf des MBA Voraussetzungen für die Aufnahme in das Masterprogramm Bitte beachten Sie folgende Anforderungen an Ihre Person: abgeschlossenes Studium (auch Berufsakademie und VWA) mindestens drei Jahre Berufserfahrung Englischkenntnisse (nachweisbar z. B. durch TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS oder CAE) Studienform und Studiendauer Dieses Programm wird als berufsbegleitendes Studium mit ergänzenden Präsenzseminaren an Wochenenden durchgeführt und umfasst einen Zeitraum von 24 Monaten. Die für dieses Studium erforderlichen Unterlagen sowie Lehrbücher sind in diesem Angebot eingeschlossen. Der Zugriff auf EBSCO Journals und ULearn ist ebenfalls inbegriffen. Zeitaufwand Pro Modul findet in der Regel ein Seminarwochenende statt. Die Seminarwochenenden werden von Professoren und Dozenten der University of Surrey geleitet. Die Seminare finden Samstag und Sonntag statt. Der Zeitbedarf, der für dieses Studium aufzuwenden ist, beträgt durchschnittlich 10 Stunden pro Woche. We will provide an introduction to the major practices and policies used in the management of people, and encourage you to appraise these practices from a range of stakeholder and disciplinary perspectives. We will help you to become more aware of the significance of issues such as change, globalisation, corporate social responsibility (CSR) and ethics for the management of people. 9 Marketing Management This module provides you with a rigorous theoretical framework for analysing and understanding marketing in various contexts. Integrating theoretical concepts and models with practical application, the module aims to enable you to understand the contribution marketing can make to business success. The emphasis of the module is the management of marketing within contemporary settings. It looks at marketing philosophies, context, strategies, operations, structures, systems, techniques and tactics, and all customer-facing functions. You will cover key concepts and issues such as environmental factors, consumer behaviour, marketing planning, segmentation, targeting and positioning, new technology, services marketing, ethics, and the marketing mix. The module will help you develop the tools to deal with marketing contexts and philosophies, consumer behaviour, marketing research, approaches to planning and positioning, product and branding strategies, pricing strategies, marketing communications, distribution, services, and relationship marketing. 10 Operations Strategies This module will provide you with both a theoretical and practical understanding of operations strategy. It will systematically develop a framework for understanding strategic operations management within the context of a firm s corporate strategy. It will examine the key components of these strategies in order to develop an understanding of the operations management function. Summary of Aims While the Surrey MBA will help you to master the day-to-day skills and issues involved in running a business, every organisation needs to keep an eye on the bigger picture. Building on theoretical understanding and practical exploration of operations strategy, this module demonstrates how strategic operations management enhances corporate planning. You will systematically develop a framework for understanding strategic operations management within the context of a firm s corporate strategy. You will examine the key components of these strategies, and thus develop an understanding of the operations management functions. 11 Financial Management This module provides an understanding of financial accounting data and methods. You will evaluate the financial performance of a business, develop an appreciation of financial management and control processes and understand the investment and financial decision-making processes. By looking at the conceptual foundations for understanding, analysing and interpreting financial information, we will help you build your ability to think across management disciplines and to appreciate the fiscal significance and implications of business decisions. Summary of Aims The aims of this module are: To understand financial statements, their content and purpose, their interpretation and their limitations, with increased awareness of the legal and accounting constraints in their production To use an organisation s corporate reporting to evaluate its current performance and its future sustainability To understand and apply the principles of budgeting and planning, and use the cost concepts required for decision making To comprehend the theoretical basis of investment appraisal techniques and evaluation of the risks involved, and use valuation skills and metrics in capital budgeting To identify the sources of finance of a business or other organisation, and recognise the key relationships between debt and equity To evaluate the different capital structure options available to a business To understand working capital requirements in companies Indicative Content The module will enhance your confidence when looking at the financial environment, corporate governance, accounting standards, accounting principles and company reporting, analysis of the prime financial statements, basic cost management, principles of budgeting, capital-budget decision making, working capital management, sources and cost of finance, and cost of capital. 12 Action Consultancy and Business Simulation This module challenges the student to understand better the complex interrelationship between theory and practice and explore the extent to which theoretical models studies in the core modules can be applied in practical business situations. The aims of the module are to develop and apply consultancy and problem solving skills and to reflect proactively on the challenging experience of working as part of a consultancy team. At our overseas centres, working in teams ( action learning sets ) students investigate a real business problem in an organisation at which one of them is employed. Before embarking on the case, students are trained in action learning and consultancy, team-building, negotiation and conflict resolution. Strategic Management in a Global Context This is an elective core module that offers in a synthetic form interdisciplinary knowledge which derives from the following subjects: business strategy, international business management, corporate ethics and governance, and business law. The module develops in depth knowledge, understanding, and practical awareness of how to design and implement strategies in international context, how to make strategic choices in a competitive and uncertain environment, and how to lead strategic positioning of companies in the global market place. Summary of Aims The module aims to provide participants with both a theoretical and practical understanding of how corporate strategy can be formulated in the light of environmental and internal conditions and requirements. More specifically, the module equips participants with a framework for understanding corporate strategy as an interdisciplinary activity within the context of a competitive market economy, leading to corporate decision-making. The module aims to enhance a broad and ethically sound picture of business policy and corporate strategy development with dynamic and stakeholder focus. Contemporary issues in business and management will be discussed in the context of industry specialisation. 13 Management Research and Dissertation This is a central component of the Surrey MBA Programme. Following a thorough grounding in research methods, you will conduct a systematic, critical analysis of a management issue of your choice. The dissertation is a key integrative part of the MBA requiring demonstration of an ability to synthesise concepts and apply appropriate theories to a current business management problem. You will be supported by a member of the MBA faculty who will act as your supervisor throughout the duration of the project. Summary of Aims The Aims of the module are to provide students with an understanding of the epistemological issues that underpin the choice of research topic, methodology and method. The module will help students in identifying a subject worthy and capable of research, and to formulate a plan for the implementation of the research process. Students will be able to select and apply appropriate research strategies with particular reference to issues of validity and reliability and objectivity of the research process. 14 Project Management This module aims to extend your prior learning by linking theory with practice. With a focus on collaborative projects, it helps you develop the ability to plan and manage a small to mediumsized multi-partner project to its successful conclusion. On completion of the module, you will have the knowledge and skills of project management for practical strategic and operational problem-solving. Summary of Aims The primary aim of this module is to help students put into practice their theoretical knowledge of project management. Students would have acquired a basic understanding of project management in Production and Operations Management. As an elective module, it extends the prior learning by linking theory with practice. With a focus on collaborative projects, it helps students develop the ability to plan and manage a small to medium sized multi-partner project to its successful conclusion. To reflect modern project working, students are encouraged to work cooperatively throughout the semester. On completion of the module, participants should be able to apply the knowledge and skills of project management for practical strategic and operational problem-solving. 15 Entrepreneurship The objectives of this module are to enable you to evaluate the various theories of entrepreneurship, analyse the economic and social role of entrepreneurship, evaluate the factors affecting the development of entrepreneurship in society, critically assess and explore the processes involved in developing your own entrepreneurial capability and in creating an entrepreneurial venture. Entrepreneurship is a widely used but little understood concept. Often it is equated with new venture creation and small businesses. In recent years governments in both the developed and developing world have seen it as the panacea for economic growth and development and the source of new jobs and business models. The rationale of this module is to introduce participants to the concept of entrepreneurship and its role in economic and business development. Summary of Aims The objectives of this module are to enable participants to: Evaluate the various theories of entrepreneurship Analyse the economic and social role of entrepreneurship Evaluate the factors affecting the development of entrepreneurship Critically evaluate the types of support that can stimulate entrepreneurship and an enterprise culture Analyse the nature and characteristics of the entrepreneur Critically assess and explore the processes involved in developing their own entrepreneurial capability and in creating an entrepreneurial venture. 16 Financial Strategy This module is to provide a substantial course in a synthetic form of financial resources management, risk management, and financial markets at a level appropriate to MBA and also to serve as a springboard to advanced specialist finance studies. Summary of Aims This module aims to provide a theoretical and practical understanding of financial strategy. It develops in-depth understanding of corporate finance theories and practical awareness of how these are applied in the real world. It further provides comprehensive knowledge of how businesses and corporations utilise financial resources and financial markets in a variety of situations, including start-up ventures, establishing corporations, corporate re-structuring in order to achieve the ultimate goal of maximising the value of their enterprise. It also introduces theories and practices of financial risk management. Taking a holistic view, it analyses sustainability as a business paradigm and examines how concern for the environment and broader economic and social sustainability agendas can be implemented by organisations, strategically and operationally, within local contexts. Strategic Change Management This module is intended to provide you with an understanding of the concept of strategic change management and, in particular, a broad, multidisciplinary approach to managing development and change. 17 Summary of Aims This module will help you to develop a broad, multi-disciplinary approach to managing development and change. You will examine the nature of change and its different conceptualisations, the significance of environmental change and its impact on organisations, the role of culture and power in change implementation, as well as various models, frameworks and methodologies for managing change. You will become better able to map change paths and decide on effective strategic level change management interventions, while critically evaluating the role of change agents and their significance to companies in transition. Aimed at providing an understanding of the interaction between the law, employment and labour relations, the module focuses on contractual aspects of employment and the effects of statutory duties imposed on parties. It aims to engender an appreciation of the intricacies of employer/employee relations. 18 In its accreditation report, the AMBA panel concluded that the Surrey MBA is a well-designed, rigorous programme of study, which embraces a range of relevant theory firmly linked to the practical world of leadership, business and management. Furthermore, the report noted that the curriculum has been designed to benefit from input by MBA faculty clearly derived from, and illuminated by, their extensive links as consultants and researchers with contemporary business and industry. The University of Surrey MBA is offered in collaboration with the International Business School Lippstadt.
