1 GERMAN 204: INTERMEDIATE GERMAN II THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL: FALL 2013 SYLLABUS The following terms and abbreviations are used throughout the syllabus: = Unit, theme, and module divisons in Weiter geht s! Lernbuch and the IA WS = Wortschatz (vocabulary) Cad = Computer printouts due (turn in your printout of those IA subunits listed in the syllabus) = IA (Interactive DVD) = Lehrbuch (textbook) = downloadable grammar Vortrag = oral presentation 100 Wörter = submit your typed or hand-written short essay in class homework (See Sakai site) Aufsatz = longer essay; bring your typed print-out to class AND upload as pdf to Sakai Organization of Weiter geht s! The Weiter geht s! program emphasizes both language and culture, using three distinct but equally important elements: interactive software (IA), the Weiter geht s! Lernbuch, and time spent in class with your classmates and your instructor. Units in the Lernbuch and the IA are organized around cultural themes that intermediate speakers of German are likely to encounter when they travel to Germany, Austria, and German-speaking Switzerland or interact with Germans around the world. Each unit is subdivided into three subunits. Although Weiter geht s! focuses on cultural vocabulary, cultural context, and cultural interactions, it is not possible to learn German successfully without consciously learning about how the language is put together correctly. Alongside our cultural explorations, we will reflect on those grammar points that are necessary for speaking German accurately in context. Grammar explanations (in the textbook and on the Interactive) and downloadable homework are highlighted in grey under the homework column. Approach to homework: Prior to every class, you should first complete the activities on the IA and then those in the Lernbuch that will be introduced and discussed that day. Once you are finished with the IA and the Lernbuch, turn to the grammar explanations for that day. It is of utmost importance that you learn and review the vocabulary listed on the interactive and used in the Lernbuch, as well as new words introduced in class. Note: The entry next to each date shows the material (Lehrstoff) to be covered on that day and the homework (Hausaufgaben) to be completed before class that day. Cad: The Computerausdrucke that you will have to hand in at the conclusion of each subunit cover a significant amount of information and should be done over the course of the week and not the night before.
