2 Academic curriculum vitae of Norman Backhaus Academic curriculum vitae of Norman Backhaus I studied Geography and socioeconomic history at the University of Zurich and received a PhD from the University of Zurich in My venia legendi for Human Geography I obtained in 2004, I was promoted to adjunct professor (Titularprofessor including the right to supervise PhDs at MNF faculty, University of Zurich) Currently I am adjunct professor at the Dept. of Geography of the University of Zurich. My research activities are driven by the desire to contribute to sustainable development in developing, newly industrialized and developed countries. The identification and analysis of processes of globalization and their consequences on the local level is one angle through which I address changes that are either contributing or detrimental to sustainable development. I am doing this from a perspective of people s practices using social theories and applying methods of the social sciences. My regional scope encompasses Southeast Asia and Switzerland. During the last years My research activities revolved around nature conservation, tourism, and landscape development in Malaysia (Backhaus 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005a,b, 2006, 2008) a major building block of my habilitation and Switzerland (Backhaus 2008, 2010; Backhaus, Müller & Müller-Böker 2008; Backhaus & Stremlow 2010; Backhaus, Reichler & Stremlow 2007a,b,c, 2008; Müller & Backhaus 2007; Müller et al. 2007; Grêt-Regamey et al. 2012). As president of the research commission of the Swiss National Park (since 2013) I am is engaged in several research projects regarding tourism and the socioeconomic development in the region of the park (i.e. Trachsel & Backhaus 2011; Jauss & Backhaus 2013; Backhaus et al. 2013). Besides a collaboration with the Universiti Utara Malaysia that was established in 2011 and deals with the spatial appropriation of street vendors I was involved in the open air exhibition Landschaft? that was successfully displayed in the Swiss Loetschental during summer and autumn Within the University Priority Research Programme (URPP) Asia and Europe of the University of Zurich I am supervising PhD student Eric Alms, who works on the political ecology of Chinese national parks (i.e. Jiuzhaigou World Heritage Site). In June 2012 I thus was invited by swissnex China to present this project and Swiss nature conservation in Shanghai.
