THH 204 ( ) Hours/ Sprechstunde: M-F and by appointment University of Central Oklahoma/ Modern Languages Department COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course presents a review of German grammar and application of grammatical principles through extensive composition. Prerequisites: GERM 1114,1224 and COURSE OBJECTIVE: The objective of German 2223 is to increase your communicative proficiency by building vocabulary, to develop your conversation skills, and to improve your reading comprehension while reviewing selected grammar structures. You will also develop your composition and writing skills. TEXTBOOKS: Deutsche Sagen und Legenden: A Collection of Legends from the German-Speaking World, Herb Kernecker and Hyde Flippo, National Textbook Company (1998: Lindenwood, IL). The grammar topics will be illustrated by the required textbook: German in Review (4 th ed.) Sparks and Vail. And we will read Erich Kästner: Emil und die Detektive In addition, this course is richly enhanced through the use of D2L, accessible via your UCOnnect account. You must be able to use Microsoft Office Word or a compatible word processor and be able to print or documents. TRANSFORMATIVE LEARNING: After discipline knowledge of the German language and its use, students gain a global perspective on geographical, cultural and political issues in German settings. Students will exercise their creative potential through structured dialogues and written compositions. GRADES: The semester grade for each student results from the sum of all exams, quizzes, assignments, class activities and homework. The scale is based on 10% graduation of = A, 80 to 89 = B, etc. Below 60% is an F 4 story tests (4 X 75) vocabulary quizzes (8 X 20) grammar quizzes (5 X 20) writing assignments (4 X 50) orals (Sprechsituation) (4 X 50) 200 class participation. (20 X 2) 40 TESTS: The chapter tests cover the material from the reading in a four-skills test of your ability to read and hear German material and respond to the topics of the chapter in writing. VOCABULARY QUIZZES: You should be prepared to create sentences with the vocabulary you have learned. The sentences must pertain to the subject of the chapter. This is not just a fill-in-the-blank quiz! GRAMMAR QUIZZES: Topics from the Sparks/Vail grammar review will be tested through these quizzes. The quizzes are directly based on the Express in German exercises. ESSAYS: Each paper should be 2 pages long. Basic mistakes should be avoided with progressive mastery over the semester. ORALS: The Sprechsituationen will be carried out on their own schedule. 2 students carry on an exchange that is not memorized, but does cover a known topic or situation. CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENTS: We will do a fair amount of group work in class. For each chapter you will receive a grade for your productivity during these exercises. The activities are straightforward, but require you to create or produce text, conversational material, and summaries of discussions. HOMEWORK: Homework is due in class for the day assigned or before. These are written assignments derived from the text of the chapter or exercises which must be prepared. LATE WORK: The instructor is willing to accommodate scheduling difficulties, but only after consultation. Otherwise, tardy work will simply count as 0. Permitted late submission bears no penalty. CLASS ATTENDANCE: You are expected to attend and participate in the class. The instructor should be notified promptly and clearly about any absences. After 3 absences, you can expect difficulties with your grade, such as dropping by a letter grade and no permisison for making up late work. I will refer students to the academic early warning system if needed. PLAGIARISM: Your work should be your own, or otherwise completed within the framework of originality described by the instructor for a particular assignment. Machine translation, work of others, copied work and cheating will almost certainly be

2 discovered. The consequences will take the form of the full range of sanctions described in the Student Code of Conduct and Academic Affairs policies. These could be modest (re-submission of the work) to severe (a failing grade for the assignemnt or the course) to profound (a recommendation that the stduent be suspended from the institution). All instances of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Student Conduct Office. Regents statement on workload: It is expected that a full-time college student will spend a minimum amount of time each week in class attendance and study out of class approaching a 40-hour work week. A person employed on a full-time basis should not expect simultaneously to maintain a full-time academic schedule. At the undergraduate level, this means that for each hour in class, a student is expected to spend at least three (3) hours doing homework.
